"You're a part of this world until that curtain closes." Prime Video debuts this documentary film streaming on their service starting today - July 25th - if anyone wants to watch. Cirque du Soleil: Without a Net is a doc feature that follows the resurgence of Cirque du Soleil after the most difficult period in its history - shutting down during the pandemic in 2020 & 2021. This film originally premiered in late 2022 at the Doc NYC Film Festival, waiting for a final full release this year. When CdS attempts to fully reboot its flagship production, "O", more than a year after an abrupt global shutdown, both performers & crew members face uncertainty as they work to return to their world-class standards in time for the (re)opening night curtain in Las Vegas. Some may also remember there was a special 3D movie called Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away, produced by none other than James Cameron,...

The Digital Era: Real-time Films From 2000 To Today
40 years before, in 1960, lighter cameras enabled a cinéma vérité-flavored revolution in street realism. By 2000, new digital cameras suggested a whole new set of promises, including telling stories that would have been unimaginable within minimum budgets for features even ten years before. In 2000, film purists warned that digital still didn’t look as good as celluloid, but that didn’t stop at least three innovative filmmakers from boldly going where no filmmaker had gone before. Mike Figgis’ Timecode (2000) was the first star-supported (Salma Hayek, Stellan Skarsgard, Holly Hunter, among many others) single-shot project since Rope, underlining that earlier film’s timelessness. If Run Lola Run could do one story three times, then Timecode would do three or four stories one time: the movie is four separate ninety-minute shots shown all at the same time, each in one quadrant of the screen. Where do you look?...

He's currently working on preproduction for the first of three sequels to Avatar, with a due date of December 2016 for the finished product. [Variety] Brilliance: Ahead of production starting this summer, Will Smith has dropped out of the starring role in Brilliance, which revolves around a federal agent tracking down a "brilliant" -- someone born with "extraordinary abilities" -- who is planning a terrorist attack. James Cameron has announced plans for an Avatar arena tour, in collaboration with Cirque du Soleil.
The tour is inspired by the film, and will debut in late 2015.
Cameron announced the news alongside Cirque du Soleil president/CEO Daniel Lamarre at the C2MTL Commerce + Creativity Conference.
"Over the years, I have discovered the extraordinary talents and imaginations of both the artists and the creative forces behind Cirque du Soleil," the director said. "I know we share the common goal of bringing audiences to another level of entertainment experiences. I look forward to doing just that on this project."
Cameron has worked with Cirque du Soleil before, as executive producer of the Andrew Adamson-directed 3D film Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away.

Update: Got a press release with the details for Avatar, which is the first film that Cirque Du Soleil has used for a touring act. Release is below the original story. Breaking: How invested is James Cameron in the blue people that populate his Avatar world? Cameron, who’s readying a trio of 3D-shot sequels to Hollywood’s all time highest grossing film, has announced that he will team with Cirque du Soleil to develop an arena-tour show that is inspired by the film. The show will debut in late 2015. He announced it alongside Cirque Du Soleil president/CEO Daniel Lamarre at the C2MTL-Commerce and Creativity Conference. Exclusive: After a last-ditch attempt at restructuring that was ongoing as recently as last week, longtime Hollywood marketing and branding agency The Cimarron Group is closing its doors altogether. This just in from Cimarron CEO Bob Farina: “It is with much regret that I announce the closing of Cimarron Group. I want to thank the incredible executive team and staff that has served this agency with their creativity and dedication. Over the past thirty-three years, our clients have meant everything to us and we appreciate all of them beyond measure.” Sources tell me contractors and vendors have gone unpaid for months without relief from the troubled company which started out specializing in movie trailers and ad campaigns and also offered theatrical, broadcast, in-home and home video/digital services. Cimarron had also attempted to branch out into consumer branding, resort hospitality, and location-based live entertainment services with clients like Feld Entertainment, MGM Grand, and Cirque de Soleil.

Chicago – Contrary to what James Cameron may have you believe, a 3D movie theater is not the best venue to showcase the super-human physical feats of Cirque du Soleil. In fact, it’s a pretty awful substitute for the visceral thrill of a live performance. The audience experiences it like an English-speaking agnostic attending a Latin mass—there’s plenty of loud pageantry on display, but none of it makes any sense.
That’s because Andrew Adamson’s big-screen novelty, “Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away,” is a tonally disjointed highlight reel that stitches together a greatest hits catalogue of Cirque acts while presenting them with zero context. Attempting to describe any given moment of this picture would be as hopeless an effort as Matt Lauer’s bewildered commentary during Danny Boyle’s Opening Ceremony at last year’s Olympics. I could tell you that a hobo clown is lit on...

Using a giant pile of money to make an even bigger pile of money, James Cameron perfectly implements a standard big-budget Hollywood film has these days. Titanic and Avatar happened to be the most expensive movies of all time, but also the highest grossing movie ever made. The Avatar sequels Cameron’s been promising since 2009 and last November, Cameron said he hoped to have the scripts for Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 finished by February. Sadly, Cameron is still at work on getting back into the world of Pandora. While promoting Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away, he told PlayGoesStrong on his work-in-progress, Avatar saga, saying:... “Prepare to be amazed terrified, titillated, and amused. From all four corners of the globe…”
Despite being free from the stage in the film medium, Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away (2012) clearly feels imaginatively tied to a stage setting. According to the featurette, that’s precisely where they wanted to be. They wanted to put us “right in the show” so that we see the wires and the danger. That’s too bad really. You’d think one of the most imaginative stage production companies would bring some of their copious vision to film. Doubly so when James Cameron is executive producer. So what we get is the filmed version of a variety of Cirque du Soleil shows strung together with a minimal plot—then again, considering Cirque du Soleil, the plot is considerable by comparison.

Hitting DVD and Blu-ray D/3D Blu-ray today is this adaptation of several Cirque du Soleil shows wrapped in an original story about a young woman who falls into a mysterious world and encounters all sorts of mystical characters. Life of Pi I don't always include the 3-D Blu-ray version when I put together this column, but with Life of Pi that's sort of the whole point right? I mean, if anyone talks about this movie the first, and sometimes only, thing they talk about are the visuals. Personally it was only an "okay" movie that I didn't really think amounted to much, but I expect it will have a rather impressive life on the home video market following its Oscar wins.

Moviefone's New Release of the Week "Life of Pi" What's It About? The best-selling novel about Pi, a 16-year-old boy who survives a shipwreck and is stranded in the ocean with a hyena, orangutan, wounded zebra, and Bengal tiger, is finally brought to the screen by Ang Lee. James Cameron is a huge fan of 3D and its possibilities on the big screen, as well as home televisions. It.s no surprise he signed on as an executive producer for Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away, a 3D film that follows a love story through time and space as a couple who lock eyes are dreamily shuffled through famous Cirque du Soleil landscapes. The film hits 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD on March 12 (which is next week, for those of you having trouble keeping track of dates) and now Paramount Home Entertainment has put together a behind-the-scenes clip from the flick, for fans to see how the 3D vision was accomplished. The Cirque crowd has been putting together some fanciful and truly strange movies for years, but this time around, they had Cameron to help them get invested in the potential of the 3D. Holy Motors I don't know how many of the people that included Leos Carax's Holy Motors on their year end top ten were doing it to seem hip or actually, truly loved it, but I remain unconvinced that anyone can separate this movie from any other nutty, "what the hell?" movie that hits cinema screens each year. That isn't to say it's a bad film, in fact it was one of the more entertaining when it came to post-screening conversation in Cannes last year, but best of the year? Eh, I guess that depends on how you qualify such a status. I determine my year end best by those movies I want, and have a desire, to watch again. Holy Motors doesn't fit in that category, but I suggest all of you at least give it a watch to see what you get out of it. You can read...

Good news for fans of Shane Acker, director of the acclaimed animated film 9 from a few years back, he's lined up another animation project. Deadline/Variety report that Reel FX Creative Studios (of Open Season 2 & 3, Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away, Turkeys) has signed on Shane Acker to direct their new CG animated feature Beasts Of Burden, based on the Dark Horse comics of the same name. The comics are about a team of investigative animals — five dogs and a cat named Orphan. Ever since first seeing 9 I've been keeping a close watch on Acker, who has lined up a few projects, none of which have hit the screen yet. Beasts of Burden is a Dark Horse Comics team of animals, created by writer Evan Dorkin and artist Jill Thompson, that investigate different paranormal events that occur in their small neighborhood of Burden Hill. The screenplay for the big screen...

Musical has already matched last year's top four films, but while Flight remains grounded, Django Unchained will be Tarantino's biggest UK hit
The winner
With a reasonable drop of 31%, Les Misérables retains the top spot for a fourth straight week, and has now delivered a cumulative total of £30.14m. Tom Hooper's musical is the first release of 2013 to pass the £30m milestone. A white-knuckle plane crash is just the beginning of Washington's troubles in this unorthodox drama, which finds his hero-pilot status compromised by the fact that he was high on duty. Between the demons of alcoholism and the aviation authority investigation, he goes into a personal tailspin – but it's not your typical rehab story and you'll want to see how he'll get out of it.

This weekend, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters hunted down the No. 1 spot at the box office with $19 million from 3,372 theaters. Although Hansel and Gretel can hardly be called a fairy-tale success at this point, it proved far more bewitching than fellow newcomers Parker and Movie 43, which were left with only bread crumbs in their sad debut frame.
Paramount and MGM spent $50 million to produce Hansel and Gretel, which was shot in 2011 and originally scheduled to be released in March 2012. Distributor Paramount moved the film’s release to this month to capitalize on star Jeremy Renner, whom the studio...

The controversy over this film's use of torture is a reflection of how problematic it is to classify. Is it a historical dramatisation? A factual reconstruction? A post-Bourne spy thriller? Whatever it is, it's state of the art film-making: lean, snappy, tense, gripping and as single-minded as its heroine in the 10-year pursuit of Bin Laden. But there's still much room for complexity and ambiguity. Yes, that pursuit involves torture, but also intelligence, personal determination and, ultimately, action – all of which Bigelow is well-equipped to convey.

Three juggernauts grossing $28 million or more dominated a strong post-Christmas weekend, all jockeying for position since last Tuesday. The shakeout led to the top film on December 25 ("Les Miserables") falling to third by the weekend, beat out by top dog "The Hobbit" followed by "Django Unchained." But all three films contributed to a weekend total more than 20% above last year's results. A fourth new release, "Parental Guidance," ended up overperforming despite receiving virtually none of the attention nabbed by the top three. These numbers managed to push total annual box office to a new record --an estimated $10.8 billion--by a small margin. Because of the strong weekend, we are reporting a Top 13 List, as the business spread around a much wider number of films than most other times of the year. Another new release -- Paramount's "Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away" --managed only a 15th place finish ($2.4 million on...

This holiday season, James Cameron dips his feet into the world of Cirque du Soleil from a 3D perspective with an all-new family movie, Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away. Watch the high-flying preview.
Directed by Shrek and Chronicle of Narnia director Andrew Adamson, executive producer James Cameron brings the same 3D technology used for Avatar to the big top to shoot the acrobatics of Cirque du Soleil. Cirque du Soleil shows are remarkable in person, but the 3D perspective should place viewers in the middle of the high-flying action.

Five new nationwide releases hit theaters this pre-Christmas weekend, though none came close to taking first place from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Even though it did hold on to the top spot, though, The Hobbit's performance was underwhelming. The Peter Jackson-directed Lord of the Rings prequel plummeted 57 percent to an estimated $36.7 million for a new total of $149.9 million. That 10-day gross is noticeably lower than that of The Return of the King ($190.8 million) and The Two Towers ($168.1 million), which is disappointing when considering ticket price inflation and 3D/IMAX premiums. That steep 57 percent drop also suggests The Hobbit is going to be more front-loaded than most movies at this time of year. I Am Legend had an identical decline on the same Dec. 21-23 weekend in 2007, and if The Hobbit continues to perform similarly it will wind up with just $280 million at the domestic box office (lower than...

Winners Of The Week: The little guys. And by that we mean Bilbo and his dwarf pals, plus Tom Cruise and Paul Rudd. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey fell an expected 57 percent in its second weekend and still easily defeated an army of holiday weekend newcomers with an estimated haul of $36.7 million, good for a 10-day total of $149.9 million. Debuting in a distant second place was Cruise's action thriller Jack Reacher, opening with an estimated $15.6 million. Rudd, star of Judd Apatow's comedy This Is 40, saw his movie premiere...

Sure, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey set a December record last weekend when it opened with $84.5 million, but after eight days in theaters, it’s now clear that the Lord of the Rings prequel is running well behind the final Lotr film, The Return of the King, which earned $377.8 in 2003 — without 3D and IMAX surcharges.
The Hobbit dropped by a huge 73 percent from its first Friday to $10.2 million yesterday, which puts it on pace for a $33 million weekend. That would give The Hobbit a running total of about $147 million by Sunday, its tenth day of release. The Return of the King...

The only question with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was to ask just how much it would drop after its December opening weekend number of $84.6 million. What's a satisfactory drop with a film that front-loaded? 50%? 55%? After Friday it looks like we might be looking at something of a 62% drop as it brought in $10.2 million to kick off the weekend, onward to something like $32 million once all is said and done. You could look at last weekend's number and note that about $13 million came from midnight screenings and take that out of consideration, at which point we're looking at a 55% drop, but aren't we now just massaging the numbers to make them look better? The box-office story for The Hobbit, however, will be told over the coming weeks. A big drop was to be expected, so now it needs to hold on. We'll see how it does. New in theaters we...

Chicago – Cirque du Soleil, which began with two street performers in Quebec in 1984, has grown into a multi-million dollar enterprise with shows on every continent and seven simultaneous extravaganzas in Las Vegas. The Vegas shows make up the storyline for “Cirque du Soleil: World’s Away.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The style of Cirque – that of an evolution in artsy, acrobatic big top performance – is an acquired taste, and fans of the concept will probably love the 3D film maneuverings of the various Las Vegas shows. But there is also a redundancy in that style, and because the narrative is spare, it does tend to feel like a circus parade infomercial of “visit exciting Las Vegas, and see these shows live!” It’s best to go in with an open mind and heart towards the Cirque zeitgeist, otherwise the piece just blends together, distinctively visual but a bit empty in the creative variation department.

With the holidays just around the corner, it's time to prepare for a major influx of movies hitting multiplexes everywhere. This weekend it's a battle between Jack Reacher starring Tom Cruise, Disney's Monsters, Inc. 3D re-release and a pair of comedies: Judd Apatow's This is 40 and The Guilt Trip starring Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand. Tom Cruise is still expected to bring it home for Paramount, especially after the success of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol last year... but hey, you never know. We've also got a flood of awards contenders in limited release including tsunami flick The Impossible, Michael Haneke's Amour, and Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty, which unfortunately isn't going wide until January. Here we go; the heavy hitters are starting to move in. Leading up to Christmas at the box office we have five new wide releases – “Cirque Du Soleil: Worlds Away,” which is unlikely to crack the top ten, “The Guilt Trip,” “Jack Reacher,” “Monsters, Inc. 3D” and “This Is 40.” While all four do have the potential to post a decent opening intake, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” will maintain that top spot with ease, posting a solid a $40 million for its second weekend out. “Jack Reacher” should open similar to “Valkyrie” with about $21 million to start while a slightly higher theater count could be just what [ Read More ]

Afraid of opening any of their end-of-year titles ahead of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the major studios instead decided to pack the long Christmas weekend with eight nationwide releases. In comparison, the last time Christmas fell on a Tuesday there were only five new entries. While the abundance of new material does mean there's plenty for audiences to choose from, it also means that at least a few of these movies are going to get seriously lost in the pack. Coming off its $84.6 million opening weekend, it's a foregone conclusion that The Hobbit will once again lead the box office, though it could yield the top spot on Christmas Day to Django Unchained or Les Miserables. It's important to remember that around the holidays, movies have very strong multiples and often end up with five to seven times as much as their opening weekend gross, and therefore lower-than-normal grosses...

Current Streak: 1 Straight Weekend #1 Predicted Correctly Threat Level to Streak Being Broken: I'd put it at an even 20 percent. Reason: There's some chance Jack Reacher or This is 40 hit their absolute max potential and The Hobbit slides more than predicted. But again, that's a lot of variables breaking just right to spring the upset. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey cleaned up last weekend, though lost in the "best December weekend ever!!" conversation was the fact that it opened lower than the last two Lord of the Rings films (adjusted for inflation). Is the franchise on the wane? None of the Lotr films had 3D or 48fps, though that's probably only an eight percent bump. Still, if you are looking for a bright side, you could note that the film currently stands at $250 million worldwide, and the budget for all three was a reported $450 million. Thus, using our standard 2.5 multiplier,...

After breaking the record for the best opening day in December with $37.5 million, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was expected to bring in a final three-day tally of somewhere in the high $90 million range. Unfortunately, a 25% dip on Saturday lowered that total to $84.8 million, which was still enough to break I Am Legend's five-year record of $77 million. It was also a number close enough to our Box-Office Oracle's $88 million prediction to make Laremy happy this Sunday, now that he's back on track and in the winner's column, finally predicting the #1 film correctly after a few stumbles as of late. As far as reader predictions go, Hobbit predictions ranged from $90-100+ million as confidence was certainly high. One commenter even suggested readers were "high" to even go any lower than $100 million, writing, "You guys are high if you think this opens to less than $100m." Hmmm, so what's that mean for the eventual result?...

After an unsuitably lavish breakfast, I catch a Mall of the Emirates-bound shuttle by the skin of my teeth and scuttle through the Mall --which looks just like a mall, only bigger, to paraphrase the well-known joke of what the unimpressed woman said to the flasher – arriving at the theater screening “Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away” in 3-D, just before it starts. I’m underwhelmed. After Werner Herzog’s amazing 3-D “Cave of Forgotten Dreams,” exploring the 20,000-year-old paintings in the Chauvet caves of southern France, and Wim Wenders’ glorious 3-D “Pina,” featuring the dances of Pina Bausch, it seemed that 3-D had claimed its place as a valid art form. The presence of James Cameron as an executive producer of “Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away,” also seemed to indicate seriousness. The film consists of acts from various Cirque productions, some of which I’ve seen in the...

With 2013 rapidly approaching, it seems to be an apt time to look back over what has been a pretty memorable year for cinema. Everybody is beginning to pick out their personal favourites from 2012 and various sites, blogs and publications are starting to release their yearly best-of lists as well. However, over the past few years, one of the most enjoyable ways which has emerged to pay homage to the year’s cinematic offerings has been the retrospective video. Last week an early contender was released in the form of the ’2012 Movie Trailer Mash-up’, which you can view below.
If you’re still itching for more, today we have a new video which will certainly take some beating in the highly competitive end of year retrospective movie montage stakes.
