Sad stories in anime and manga aren't uncommon by any means. Tragic backstories, one-time heroes falling from grace, doomed romances; countless series relying on tested tropes are compiled onto 'best of' lists every day. But among the most emotional and moving stories, there is one manga that is always listed among the saddest to have ever graced publications like Shōnen Jump, and it doesn't really belong with the rest of the bunch. There are sad stories and extraordinarily depressing stories. Inio Asano's Goodnight Punpun is the latter.
With a cute mascot main character as the centerpiece of the series, Goodnight Punpun is inconspicuous in its earliest sections, flaunting itself around as another coming-of-age story with a few unique character designs. What follows throughout the life of Punpun Onodera can only be described as a free fall into the depths of the worst that humanity has to offer. It's sickening,...

If there’s anything that Nier: Automata creator Yoko Taro is known for, it’s for the raunchiness of his works. All of Yoko’s games have varying degrees of sexual content in their dialogue and imagery, most famously in the revealing outfits of Nier: Automata, and Yoko has even played into that by saying he likes depicting women in skimpy outfits and asking fans to send him erotic fanart of his characters.
Yoko Taro has made a name for himself as an unabashedly raunchy creator, and the Nier: Automata anime, Nier: Automata Ver1.1a almost took that to a whole new level. It’s one thing that the animation was used to up the game’s fanservice with more shots of the women’s butts and breasts, but according to Yoko Taro, Nier: Automata Ver1.1a was going to have far more explicitly sexual content before the series producer stepped in and had it cut.

Nier: Automata Ver 1.1a is an excellent anime adaptation of the Nier: Automata video game. It's a series that tackles the themes of identity and purpose, setting Nier: Automata's characters in a bleak world where the word 'hope' is nearly all but forgotten. A2 is one of the first YorHA units produced by YorHA Command. More than just a key character for plot reasons though, her arc runs paralel with Nier's story as a whole, as her fight to find out who she is and why she exists are basically the main questions the series attempts to ask.
A2's story, like the rest of Nier, is bleak. It's filled with so many twists and turns that neither the viewer nor A2 herself can ever really be sure about what's going on around her. A2 struggles against fate itself. She doesn't care that the Council of Humanity set her up,...

Yoko Taro's acclaimed and immensely popular video game “NieR Automata” is reimagined by A-1 Pictures and Ryouji Masuyama into the anime “NieR:Automata Ver1.1a”. As is the case with most Yoko Taro projects, however, this was never going to be a simple adaptation. Combining several layers of the extensive lore of the game series, the production not only adapts the narrative of the game but also a stage play, making the anime just one piece of a larger multimedia project.

Yoko Taro’s Drakengard and Nier series have become a cult classic since their debuts, with the video games being praised for their storytelling, character development, and sense of tragedy. Although the original Nier game was met with mixed reviews, it has become a proper cult classic and this resulted in a highly successful remaster, as well as a sequel, Nier: Automata. After a lengthy hiatus, NieR: Automata Ver 1.1a has finally announced an official return date. NieR: Automata was one of the most anticipated anime of the winter 2023 season, with old and new fans alike excited to see how the popular video game would be translated into animation, and original game creator Yoko Taro writing for the anime was an especially big draw. Unfortunately, NieR: Automata ended up being one of several anime to have their productions impacted by Covid, other notable examples being Ayakashi Triangle and the Black Clover movie, and after episode #8, the anime went on an indefinite hiatus with no return in sight.
NieR: Automata Ver 1.1a wasn’t able to make it through the winter 2023 season, but fortunately, its return date has finally been announced. According to Anime News Network, NieR: Automata Ver 1.1a will return on Sunday, July 23, during which time all four remaining episodes will be marathoned one after another.

Back from its extremely short hiatus, NieR: Automata Ver1.1a hits the ground running, staking its claim to timelessness with a scintillating rendition of one of the series' trademark boss battles. Aside from simply adapting one of the original 2017 game’s set pieces into cinematic glory for the fourth episode, "a mountain too [H]igh," Ver1.1a exemplifies NieR Automata's wonderful concoction of psychological horror, action, and emotion that made the game such a surprise hit, perfectly translating the balance of tragic drama and self-awareness-laced irony that has granted this obscure franchise such staying power.
For “a mountain too [H]igh,” studio A-1 Pictures went the extra mile in bringing 2B and 9S’ foray into the abandoned amusement park to animated life, while still putting enough of a twist on the narrative to feel focused and fresh. Setting a new standard for the art of adaptation, NieR: Automata Ver1.1a, brings with it everything that made the original milestone NieR: Automata videogame such an incredible fusion of action and intellect. A painstakingly faithful re-telling of the original surprise hit, NieR: Automata Ver1.1a not only delivered a powerful send-up to the stylish action the original game was known for but also demonstrated a dedication to the beating heart of the series’ cult success: its cerebral, existentialism-tinged philosophical storytelling.

While Nier: Automata is largely a standalone story, it’s the latest game in the Drakengard franchise and a sequel to 2010’s Nier, which was remastered as 2021’s Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139… Playing Nier isn’t necessary for understanding Nier: Automata, but it does make it easier to understand certain parts of the game that are otherwise under-explained, such as why humanity died out and the entirety of Emil’s character.
Despite this, Nier: Automata is still filled with plenty of callbacks to Nier, and the NieR: Automata Ver 1.1a anime has managed to take that even further. In addition to referencing the moment from the original Drakengard game that kicked off Nier’s story, episode 3 fully animated an iconic scene from the original Nier.

NieR: Automata is a Square Enix videogame from 2017 that received positive reviews for its layered story and deep themes. While fans are still awaiting word on a potential third installment in the franchise, Aniplex has produced a NieR: Automata anime adaptation that debuted in January 2023, also to very positive reviews. Warning: Spoilers for Episode #1 of Nier: Automata Ver1.1a.
The new NieR: Automata anime channels the best of Gundam and Alita in its exciting, fast-paced battles. NieR: Automata Ver1.1a...
