Digging Up The Past...
APPROPRIATE ADULT is a superior, true crime drama. Fans of those masterful UK cop shows (i.e.: PRIME SUSPECT, A TOUCH OF FROST, REBUS, WIRE IN THE BLOOD, etc.) will not be disappointed.
Emily Watson is wonderful as the dedicated Janet Leach, and Dominic West lives his role as the oddly sympathetic serial-killer, Frederic West. The relationship between Leach and West is reminiscent of the cat and mouse game between Starling and Lecter in THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS.
Monica Dolan is incredibly terrifying as West's sadistic wife Rosemary. She's truly wicked, with facial expressions and stares that do far more than mere words to instill fear.
Highly recommended...

Naturally uneasy viewing, but will be more revealing to those just watching to be voyeurs
STAR RATING: ***** Saturday Night **** Friday Night *** Friday Morning ** Sunday Night * Monday Morning
Given popular culture's fixation with crime and particularly topics such as serial murderers, it was an inevitability that eventually a film (a TV movie, at least) would be made about the crimes of Fred and Rose West. It was even more inevitable that there would be an out cry that it would glamorize and thus cheapen the real life murders. But, the producers of Appropriate Adult took a novel approach and chose to focus not on the actual murders themselves, but, as the title suggests, the AA that it was felt needed to sit in during Fred West's police interviews on account of his apparent 'learning difficulties.' That woman was Janet Leach, played here by Emily Watson, who went on to sell her story to the tabloids but who also appeared to suffer a certifiable breakdown, after seemingly forming a bond with West, falling under his dark spell. In doing so, it casts an interesting light on the case, bringing up facts that I certainly didn't know before seeing it (i.e. Rose West being a prostitute) and serving to make an unpleasant tale even more unsavoury.
As West, Coronation Street star Craig Charles had been in the running to play the role, but it appears to have gone to The Wire star Dominic West. I've never watched that show, so I can't compare him with what he's probably known best for, but he manages to bring West to life with an eerie darkness all of his own, interspersing his usual barrage of matter of fact recollections of his heinous crimes with the occasional emotional breakdown that reveals a vaguely human side to such a monster. It's his everyman appearance in general that makes him such an unnerving character. In support, Watson also seems like an eerily credible person, a woman desperately trying to stay professional in spite of hearing first hand accounts of crimes she can't accept are humanly possible, while still forming a bond with the perpetrator of these sick crimes.
A drama about West was always going to be in the pipe line for one day, and this is a sensitively handled and none voyeuristic handling, that is relevant, enlightening and of course, very disturbing. ****

Even 27 years on.. this is still raw.
I was 14 when this atrocity came to light. And it was everywhere. I live, to this day, quite local to the area.
And as a result Gloucestershire became known country, and possibly world wide for two things after this. The Cheltenham races and a prolific serial killer.
This series was quite spot on. Hell Dominic West is near uncanny in his appearance of Fred. And the same goes for rose's actress.
Of course I can't say much for what went on during the investigation, I was a 14 year old at the time and certainly not privy to it at all, obviously, but this did bring back memories.
A very powerful and striking set of performances. Masterful and respectful treatment as far it can be.
So why the 7/10?
I'm a local. All my life excepting my service in the army.
The accents were terrible. Very bad. No one, even the thickest of Gloucestershire's finest and worst speak like that. A misrepresentation that doesn't shake the image that locals are dim and yokel like. I mean Gustav Holst was a Gloucestershire alumni. And whether you know that name or not you will know Holsts music.
Perhaps I'm being a smidgen too harsh. But it is a bug bear that I have with tv and film representation of Gloucestershire and it's people, That said. Watch it if you like a good, well paced dramatisation of true crime. But be ware... it does not pull any punches. This was a horrific event in real life. And it's represented very well in this drama.

Intelligent and thoughtful
A lesser production about the West's story would have probably gone for Se7en style moods and grisly gory details. A horror.
Fortunately, and far more rewardingly for any engaged viewer, the story focuses on a human relationship story whilst allowing the imagination to piece together events in the background.
The dynamics of the relationship are fascinating, more-so because they are true. In the final analysis, that Janet (the appropriate adult) allowed herself to be manipulated and seduced by Fred West is a chilling illustration of the true nature of what we are dealing with here. The thought that this same psychological treatment would have led countless others into his trust, and ultimately their deaths, is far more terrifying in its cold reality than any conscious attempts at "horror" could have been.
Janet doesn't only represent the victims but also the vast majority of normal human beings - vulnerable to emotional needs, a willing and optimistic mindset, and the inability to always separate imagination from reality.
A very fascinating angle on a difficult subject.

How true is this?
It's a good drama well acted. I don't know to what extent it follows actual events. I don't know whether there was an appropriate adult at West's interviews or, if there was, whether she found herself in a dilemma regarding confidentiality. I've just finished the first episode so I also don't know whether the appropriate adult is going to be properly advised about her position, but I do know that, if she is, she will be disabused of the notion that she is bound by rules of confidentiality. She is not. As a solicitor I would never have left a client alone with an appropriate adult because there is nothing to prevent that adult from giving evidence against the client and, if necessary, being compelled to do so. I'm also a bit confused as to why on earth the police would ask the adult to go to the suspects home to collect stuff and why his solicitor would let her. Finally I would say that the adult owes no duty to stay with the case. Here it seems that her role is causing her serious problems at home. That's just not necessary as she can drop out at any time and, if needed, another adult could be found. Appropriate adults are well motivated people performing an important task for no reward and, usually, no thanks but it's hard to think what misplaced sense of duty would compel one to stick on the case of a psychopath through thick and thin at the expense of family.

- TriviaThe Wests' former house at 25 Cromwell Street in Gloucester, England, was demolished in 1996, two years after the Wests were arrested. The exterior of the Cromwell Street house was recreated using an abandoned building in Cardiff Street, itself on an abandoned street slated for demolition at the time, in Higher Broughton, a suburb of Salford, part of the Greater Manchester metropolitan area. A second house that looms large in the Wests' story, 25 Midland Road, still stands, and its exterior is featured in the mini-series.
