I laughed so hard as this reminded me of my upbringing in an immigrant family attempting to assimilate in a new country, but only making it worse as we could not shake off what the local folks called "strange culture behaviour" (Sicilians associated with those gangsters. So you could say that after the release of The Godfather, our lives was never the same as we had to live up to the hype). But this animation series has an edge as it deals with Muslims living in New York on the aftermath of 9/11. To top it all off, it is blessed with the comedic talents of Ramy Youssef, as writer and the voice of the young Rumi Hussein, trying so hard to just be a normal kid, but met with racial intolerance and other obstacles associated with the horrors of pubescence. A fresh perspective on growing up in a hostile environment with a zany family making it even more complicated for poor Rumi...

This is a funny show.

It is pretty well written, the jokes are very relatable for me (as an immigrant Egyptian) and it doesn't constraint itself with "societal norms".

Some people might find some of the jokes offensive and I get it, but it's funny so either laugh or don't watch it.

The show also addresses immigrants and their families' experiences in a comedic way but the struggles and the fitting in mentality is real, we need to embrace our culture while accepting integrating into a new culture.

Ramy Youssef had his run with "ramy" but I am also glad he tried animation this time, a very talented guy and I can't wait for his next projects. Kudos to the team.

Sometimes, you're not in the mood to think too hard. You're not looking for an emotional rollercoaster or a cinematic masterpiece-you just want something that makes you laugh, keeps you entertained, and lets you tune out the world for a while. I initially had no intention of watching this, but I ended up watching a few minutes of it, and that was enough to be completely captivated by the chaotic and terrifying experience of Middle Eastern immigrants in early 2000s America. It's a hilarious, endearing, dark, and refreshingly queer comedy. It's reflective yet lighthearted, drawing proudly from Middle Eastern humor while staying firmly rooted in its American origins. It skillfully blends humor and pain together. In a time when few of us feel safe, this comedy is timely and feels much broader in its scope than just representing the Middle Eastern experience or the chaotic and often frightening experience of being an immigrant. It's also about trying to find belonging in a world that is inhospitable through humor, wisdom, and resilience.
