Sister Death (2023)

Trivia

Sister Death

Edit
Sister Death is a prequel to the 2017 film Verónica, the plot follows the paranormal experiences of a novice (Bedmar) enrolled as a teacher in a convent operating as a girls school in 1940s Spain.
Narcisa's background story has many similarities with Lucia dos Santos, who became a nun after claiming seeing and speaking to Virgin Mary multiple times in Fatima (Portugal) in the early 20th century in a very famous event for Catholic communities. The events in Fatima, or Lucia's experience, are not mentioned in the film.
Narcisa is the feminine form of Narcissus. Latinized form of Greek (Narkissos), possibly derived from (narke) meaning "sleep, numbness". Narkissos was a beautiful youth in Greek mythology who stared at his own reflection for so long that he eventually died and was turned into the narcissus flower. This name appears briefly in the epistles in the New Testament and was also borne by a few early saints, including a 2nd-century patriarch of Jerusalem. It has been used to the present, especially in Catholic regions, usually in honour of the saint as opposed to the mythological character.
This movie is a prequel to Veronica. In the latter, Narcisa speaks with a strong accent from Southern Spain, whereas in the former she speaks with a neutral Castilian accent. This change, probably done for artistic reasons, is not explained in either movie.
The film world premiered as the opener of the 56th Sitges Film Festival on 5 October 2023 and was subsequently released on Netflix on 27 October 2023.
