Spanish language content makes up a large share of global demand and has a history of transcending national borders both across the Spanish-speaking world and to other non-Spanish-speaking markets.
Looking at Spain as an origin market for high-value content, Spanish productions have seen a 22% global increase in availability on major streaming platforms between 2021 and 2023, reflecting rapid growth in new content and availability. Many of these titles have become high-performers globally, with over 200 titles in the Top 10% of demand on major global streamers. And it is not just Spanish-speaking markets driving this growth — there has been growing demand for shows and movies from Spain across regions of the world.
Parrot Analytics’ Content Valuation System can measure the contribution of individual titles to platforms’ subscriber acquisition and monthly retention. From here we can quantify at a macro level the amount of revenue that shows and movies from Spain have contributed to streaming platforms around the world.

J.A. Data they presented at the annual confab in Cannes revealed that Spain-originated content has generated an estimated $5.1 billion in global streaming revenue over the past four years.
For 2024, Spanish content is expected to deliver $1.4 billion in global revenue, reflecting a steep demand across key regions and confirming the country’s dominance in the non-English content market. Spain is Mipcom’s country of honor in this year’s edition.
“Society of the Snow,” in particular, was the #4 movie driving the most subscriber sign-ups for Netflix and ranked second among movies that contributed to the giant streamer’s subscriber renewals in Q1 2024, according to the report.

Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia’s high-anticipated “The Platform 2,” the Basque director’s follow-up to Netflix mega-hit “The Platform,” will world premiere this September at the San Sebastián film festival, closing its culinary section.
Subject of a high-profile acquisition by Netflix at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival, engineered by CAA Media Finance, XYZ Films and Latido Films, “The Platform” has gone on to shoot to the near top of Netflix’s chart of non-English film hits on record, now featuring as No. 5 with 82.8 million views, thanks to its terrorific mix of futurist dystopian sci-f and redolent social allegory wrapped in a brutal survival thriller. That comes from the set-up: a vertical prison, with hundreds of floors, with every day a stone dumbwaiter descending with food left over from tenants above. Higher-level inmates gorge themselves; those below face starvation, suicide or cannibalism.
That structure looks to be retained in “The Platform 2,” set for release on Netflix on Oct.

Between The Nun II, Sister Death, Consecration, the upcoming The First Omen, and the newly released Immaculate, starring Sydney Sweeney, it’s safe to say that nuns are having a moment in horror. So often, fear thrives in the unlit nooks of the unknown, and for many of us, that includes those who dedicate themselves to religious orders. Shrouded in intrigue and literal fabric, the combo of unwavering religious devotion and rejection of various worldly pleasures makes nuns ripe for genre exploration. While nuns are certainly trending, this is by no means the first time horror has blessed us with terrifying tales featuring such religious women.
In Häxan (1922), possessed nuns mingle with witches as director Benjamin Christensen explores the connection between mental health and mass hysteria. With movies like Alucarda (1975), Ms. 45 (1981), and St. Agatha (2018), the subgenre of nunsploitation comes into play to further explore themes of religious and sexual oppression.

2023 was a banner year for horror films from across the globe, which deserve just as much praise and attention as any domestic genre triumph.
In a year that’s had its share of ups and downs at the box office, horror continues to be a top performer and one of the most consistent sources of entertainment. Superhero fatigue continues to set in and the ballooning budgets of major studio blockbusters have started to seem more like a curse than a kindness. The film industry adapts accordingly and figures out what audiences want.
However, horror movies have never been more popular and 2023 has been a goldmine of blood, guts, and gore. This year alone has featured grandiose franchise sequels like Scream VI, Evil Dead Rise, Insidious: The Red Door, and Saw X. Even Hercule Poirot has gotten into the horror game with A Haunting in Venice. Additionally, weird and wild local horror releases like Skinamarink,...

The Spanish horror film Sister Death, released on Netflix, is not based on a true story but incorporates historical events for dramatic effect. The opening scene of Sister Death, depicting Sister Narcisa as a child with spiritual gifts, was inspired by the real-life Garabandal apparitions in the 1960s. Sister Death serves as a prequel to the true story-inspired horror film Veronica, providing the origin story of Sister Narcisa and explaining her blindness.
The events depicted in Sister Death are terrifying, leading many viewers to wonder if they were inspired by true events. The Spanish supernatural horror film was released a few days before Halloween on Netflix, following its premiere as the opener at the 56th Sitges Film Festival on October 5. The movie revolves around a novice named Sister Narcisa who starts teaching at a covenant in the 1940s after the Spanish Civil War. However, once she arrives at the all-girls school,...

This article contains spoilers for Sister Death and Veronica.
You probably remember those hyperbolic headlines about 2017’s Veronica, the so-called scariest movie on Netflix, the horror film so frightening users turned it off midway through. Six years on, the internet has had plenty of time to reevaluate this Spanish-language chiller. Was it really that scary? This writer would say no, but art is subjective.
But even if it didn’t live up to all those internet headlines and tweets you read about it, director Paco Plaza’s possession film, which stars Sandra Escacena, is still a fun time, with a few genuinely unsettling moments throughout: the Ouija seance, the nightmare where Veronica’s siblings chomp down on her arms, the scene where Veronica chases the camera down a dark hallway, the demon itself. The movie, which is very loosely based on the unexplained death of a teen girl in 1991, is also dripping with style,...

What’s the top film on VOD this week? Actually, there are three different #1s on iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu. And what makes it weirder is those films don’t rank as high as #2 anywhere they don’t top.
“Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning: Part One” (Paramount), “The Equalizer 3” (Sony), and “The Exorcist: Believer” (Universal), all $19.99 are #1 at iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu respectively. To confuse things even more, three other different films rank #2 — “Barbie” (Warner Bros.), “Saw X” (Lionsgate), and “Talk to Me” (A24). That’s six different titles total ranking in the top two of the three lists. That’s unprecedented.
It’s the third week out for “Mission,” and though it clearly is getting revenue, it is not nearly the dominant force it might have been had it been released 60, not 90, days after hitting theaters. As always, without actual numbers but only rankings to analyze,...

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Sister Death!
Sister Death, a Spanish-language horror movie, serves as a prequel to the 2017 film Veronica and explores the backstory of the blind nun called Sister Death. Both Sister Death and Veronica incorporate the theme of a solar eclipse, symbolizing the summoning of dark spirits and the hidden harm caused by enticing elements. The character parallels between Sister Narcisa and Veronica explain why Sister Narcisa is willing to help Veronica, as seen in a flash-forward scene featuring a cameo by Sandra Escacena.
Though the Spanish-language horror movies can stand alone, Sister Death and Veronica includes multiple plot and character connections. In the 2023 Netflix original movie Sister Death, a young nun with extrasensory perception named Narcisa starts teaching girls at a former convent after the Spanish Civil War. She soon finds herself experiencing disturbing supernatural events which she doesn't understand, with shocking twists unfolding before Sister Death's franchise-connecting ending.

Ever since the first Exorcist movie, we’ve been bombarded by religious horror with similar iconography, symbols, and ideas. Sister Death is a unique film that doesn’t quite fit the bill perfectly, but that makes it all the more powerful due to its unpredictable nature. The slow-burn film is not like others in the same genre, but it still uses similar visuals to propel the story, which in its own way makes it a little uninteresting. Sister Death tells the story of Sister Narcisa, a character from the 2017 Spanish-language horror film Veronica. A young novice who doubts her status as a “holy girl” begins to find strange things when she joins a convent to teach young girls. As the story unfolds, nothing is as it seems. Burning crucifixes, suffocation, and objects falling from nowhere are all common traits of this genre that this film uses extensively. So, taking some liberties,...

Sister Death is a horror movie directed by Paco Plaza starring Aria Bedmar and Almudena Amor.
It’s not uncommon for convents, churches, and the like to have terrified us throughout the centuries. Just take a look at the baroque paintings of Caravaggio and others to realize that this “chiaroscuro” thing has a lot of potential, and the film industry couldn’t resist it.
If Hollywood brought us “The Nun,” which was more successful with the audience than with critics, now comes “Sister Death” to Netflix. It’s a calm horror movie that serves as a prequel to “Veronica.” It knows how to build up suspense and maintain it before the (expected and necessary) final explosion.
It’s also commendable in its cinematography, directing, and screenplay.

It’s the spooky season, and Netflix has returned with a film that is surprisingly linked to 2017’s successful Spanish-language film Veronica. Veronica was a one-off film based on a true story, which didn’t seem to have the potential for something more, but here we have a prequel (take it with a grain of salt) about an interesting character from the film. Sister Death goes back about 60 years before the events of Veronica, where we learn about Sister Narcisa and how she became the infamous blind nun named Sister Death. Brought to us by director Paco Plaza, who also made the 2017 film, Sister Death is set up as a more slow-burn film that will leave you haunted, just like Veronica. It’s become common practice to pick semi-important or interesting characters from horror franchises that are decently successful to expand films into universes. The Conjuring is the biggest example of this.

The movie explores the dark secrets and haunting at a Catholic girls school, involving a deceased nun named Sister Socorro seeking revenge. The ending of Sister Death sets up a connection to the movie Verónica, introducing an older Sister Narcisa and hinting at her motivations and backstory.

Few things are as scary as nuns, draped in their signature black garb, dishing out vengeance and striking terror into the hearts of all. We’ve seen this eerie trope in films like The Nun, The Crucifixion, and The Blackcoat’s Daughter, among others. Yet, Sister Death sets itself apart from its contemporaries by delivering a narrative that doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares.
In this movie, it’s not the typical ghosts, spirits, or statues crying blood that are the primary sources of your fear. Instead, it’s the backstory that connects them all, leaving you with goosebumps. Sister Death, Paco Plaza’s latest film, is a feast for the eyes, especially for those who appreciate a horror film that strikes a perfect balance between a gripping narrative and spine-tingling scares. He understands that true horror lies not in the fleeting shocks but in the lingering sense of unease...

Six years after the success of the Spanish-language horror film Veronica on Netflix, Rec director Paco Plaza returns with a similarly spine-chilling prequel. Set in post-civil-war Spain, Sister Death follows the tale of a young novice named Narcisa who has just joined a new convent. She has some supernatural gifts and is something of a miracle girl in those parts. Now, she finds herself questioning her piety and her “vision” in this new school for young girls. Sister Death is definitely eerie and has its visually arresting moments, with some stunning cinematography. Sister Death definitely takes the cake when it comes to the best Nun of the year, though. In 2017, Veronica was a beast of a film, becoming overhyped with the title “scariest movie ever”. Personally, I didn’t watch it back then because it felt like it would be disappointing. On the contrary, I quite enjoyed the film, if...

2017’s Veronica was a phenomenon that took over the world. Based on a true story from 1991 about an urban legend in Madrid, the film, which was released worldwide on Netflix, was considered one of the scariest movies of all time. While it isn’t as scary as it was made out to be, the sinister nature of the film as a whole could easily get under your skin and keep you at the edge of your seats throughout its short 1-hour, 30-minute run time. It’s also mainly the performances of the young actors that make this film thrilling and amusing to watch. Not only do they carry the entire film, but they make us want to keep going even with a predictable story and a simple premise. Without knowing this film was based on a true story, it is still plenty ominous. Now, six years later, director Paco Plaza...

There are a few standout new releases on Netflix in October, but it’s a rather quiet month on the world’s most popular streaming service otherwise!
Highlights this month include a brand-new series from Spook Master Mike Flanagan. The Fall of the House of Usher is a gothic tale loosely based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe, and tells the story of two extremely unpleasant siblings whose family dynasty ends up going to hell in a handbasket. Before you ask: yes, Rahul Kohli is in it. That’s all that a lot of people need to know here (we’re people).
Elsewhere, Netflix is dropping a few interesting-looking docuseries, including one on football legend David Beckham. It promises to be an “intimate portrait” of Beckham, and the filmmakers were apparently granted unprecedented access to the sportsman and his family while making it.

Five years ago, [Rec] franchise co-creator Paco Plaza‘s horror movie Veronica was released through the Netflix streaming service, and Netflix subscribers reportedly found the film to be so terrifying that they would have to stop the movie mid-stream because they couldn’t handle the scariness. With that sort of press, it’s no surprise that Plaza and Netflix have chosen to expand the concept into a franchise with a prequel called Sister Death, or Hermana Muerte. Now the streaming service’s Tudum site has revealed that Sister Death will be released this October! They haven’t revealed the specific release date yet, but it’s nice to know this movie will be a viewing option during Halloween season this year.
The screenplay for Sister Death was written by Jorge Guerricaechevarria, who frequently works with popular genre filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia. The story he crafted has the following synopsis: In post-war Spain,...
