Looking at Spain as an origin market for high-value content, Spanish productions have seen a 22% global increase in availability on major streaming platforms between 2021 and 2023, reflecting rapid growth in new content and availability. Many of these titles have become high-performers globally, with over 200 titles in the Top 10% of demand on major global streamers. And it is not just Spanish-speaking markets driving this growth — there has been growing demand for shows and movies from Spain across regions of the world.

Parrot Analytics’ Content Valuation System can measure the contribution of individual titles to platforms’ subscriber acquisition and monthly retention. From here we can quantify at a macro level the amount of revenue that shows and movies from Spain have contributed to streaming platforms around the world.

Bayona’s Oscar-nominated “Society of the Snow,” Netflix series hit “Money Heist” and Prime Video’s “Red Queen” have spearheaded the success of Spanish content worldwide, per a new report unveiled at Mipcom by Spanish trade and investment body Icex and entertainment analytics org, Parrot Analytics.

Data they presented at the annual confab in Cannes revealed that Spain-originated content has generated an estimated $5.1 billion in global streaming revenue over the past four years.

For 2024, Spanish content is expected to deliver $1.4 billion in global revenue, reflecting a steep demand across key regions and confirming the country’s dominance in the non-English content market. Spain is Mipcom’s country of honor in this year’s edition.

“Society of the Snow,” in particular, was the #4 movie driving the most subscriber sign-ups for Netflix and ranked second among movies that contributed to the giant streamer’s subscriber renewals in Q1 2024, according to the report.

Still expanding “Elite” producer Zeta Studios has reached an agreement with auteur filmmaker Paco Plaza to develop and produce projects together. The agreement is non-exclusive regarding Plaza’s directorial work.

According to Zeta, the first project developed with Plaza will launch production in 2025.

A Valencia native who studied at Madrid’s Ecam, Plaza’s debut feature, “El Segundo nombre” (2002), won the European Grand Prix for a Fantasy Film at the prestigious Sitges Film Festival. He is best known for co-creating the “[Rec]” franchise, co-directed with Jaume Balagueró. The first film in the trilogy is a modern Spanish classic that achieved outstanding international success and was later remade in English as “Quarantine.”

Other standout titles from the filmmaker’s resume include Spanish Academy Goya nominee “Veronica” (2017),a big hit on Netflix, Luis Tosar-starrer “An Eye for an Eye” (2019), San Sebastian player “La Abuela” (2022) and Netflix’s “Hermana Muerte” (2023).

Subject of a high-profile acquisition by Netflix at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival, engineered by CAA Media Finance, XYZ Films and Latido Films, “The Platform” has gone on to shoot to the near top of Netflix’s chart of non-English film hits on record, now featuring as No. 5 with 82.8 million views, thanks to its terrorific mix of futurist dystopian sci-f and redolent social allegory wrapped in a brutal survival thriller. That comes from the set-up: a vertical prison, with hundreds of floors, with every day a stone dumbwaiter descending with food left over from tenants above. Higher-level inmates gorge themselves; those below face starvation, suicide or cannibalism.

Fantastic Pavilion, the genre business hub launched at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023, announced a slew of deals closed at the venue this year, with L..A-based Severin Films, a boutique Blu-ray and DVD label, inking a pact to release eleven Special Edition physical discs of the most popular Originals and licensed features from horror subscription streamer Shudder and IFC Films.

Initial titles include Joko Anwar’s “Satan’s Slaves”; Brandon Cronenberg’s “Antiviral”; Can Evrenol’s “Baskin”; Franck Khalfoun’s 2012 remake of “Maniac”; Douglas Buck’s 2006 remake of “Sisters” and André Øvredal’s “The Autopsy of Jane Doe.”

The deal was brokered by Severin Film’s co-founder-ceo David Gregory, Shudder’s Vice President of Programming Sam Zimmerman, and AMC Networks Director of Content Sales Lucas Verga.

So often, fear thrives in the unlit nooks of the unknown, and for many of us, that includes those who dedicate themselves to religious orders. Shrouded in intrigue and literal fabric, the combo of unwavering religious devotion and rejection of various worldly pleasures makes nuns ripe for genre exploration. While nuns are certainly trending, this is by no means the first time horror has blessed us with terrifying tales featuring such religious women.

Bill Burr’s “Old Dads” has extended its reign as the most-watched title currently on Netflix. For the second week in a row, the comedy topped the streamer’s English-language film list and scored more views than any other single title during the time period.

In its second week on the list, “Old Dads” brought in 16.3 million views, taking the movie’s total view count up to 29.6 million in only 10 days. It secured 13.3 million views last week.

On the English-language film list, “Old Dads” was followed by Emily Blunt and Chris Evans’ drama “Pain Hustlers” with 14.1 million views, Jennifer Lawrence’s sex comedy “No Hard Feelings” with 13.1 million views, Liam Neeson and Laura Dern’s 2019 action thriller “Cold Pursuit” with 6.7 million views and the 2011 family comedy “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked...

What’s the top film on VOD this week? Actually, there are three different #1s on iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu. And what makes it weirder is those films don’t rank as high as #2 anywhere they don’t top.

It’s not uncommon for convents, churches, and the like to have terrified us throughout the centuries. Just take a look at the baroque paintings of Caravaggio and others to realize that this “chiaroscuro” thing has a lot of potential, and the film industry couldn’t resist it.

If Hollywood brought us “The Nun,” which was more successful with the audience than with critics, now comes “Sister Death” to Netflix. It’s a calm horror movie that serves as a prequel to “Veronica.” It knows how to build up suspense and maintain it before the (expected and necessary) final explosion.

It’s become common practice to pick semi-important or interesting characters from horror franchises that are decently successful to expand films into universes. The Conjuring is the biggest example of this.

There are a few standout new releases on Netflix in October, but it’s a rather quiet month on the world’s most popular streaming service otherwise!

Highlights this month include a brand-new series from Spook Master Mike Flanagan. The Fall of the House of Usher is a gothic tale loosely based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe, and tells the story of two extremely unpleasant siblings whose family dynasty ends up going to hell in a handbasket. Before you ask: yes, Rahul Kohli is in it. That’s all that a lot of people need to know here (we’re people).

Elsewhere, Netflix is dropping a few interesting-looking docuseries, including one on football legend David Beckham. It promises to be an “intimate portrait” of Beckham, and the filmmakers were apparently granted unprecedented access to the sportsman and his family while making it.

From the co-director of [Rec], Paco Plaza‘s movie Veronica is getting a prequel with Sister Death (aka Hermana Muerte), and it’s coming to Netflix for Halloween.

Sister Death will premiere on Netflix on October 27, 2023.

Prequel Sister Death will center on the character Hermana Muerte, played by Consuelo Trujillo in Veronica.

In Sister Death, “In post-war Spain, Narcisa (Aria Bedmar), a young novice with supernatural powers, arrives at a former convent, now a school for girls, to become a teacher. As the days go by, the strange events and increasingly disturbing situations that torment her will eventually lead her to unravel the terrible skein of secrets that surround the convent and haunt its inhabitants.”

Almudena Amor, Luisa Merelas, Chelo Vivares, and Maru Valdivielso also star.

Five years ago, [Rec] franchise co-creator Paco Plaza‘s horror movie Veronica was released through the Netflix streaming service, and Netflix subscribers reportedly found the film to be so terrifying that they would have to stop the movie mid-stream because they couldn’t handle the scariness. With that sort of press, it’s no surprise that Plaza and Netflix have chosen to expand the concept into a franchise with a prequel called Sister Death, or Hermana Muerte. Now the streaming service’s Tudum site has revealed that Sister Death will be released this October! They haven’t revealed the specific release date yet, but it’s nice to know this movie will be a viewing option during Halloween season this year.

The screenplay for Sister Death was written by Jorge Guerricaechevarria, who frequently works with popular genre filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia. The story he crafted has the following synopsis: In post-war Spain,...

From the co-director of [Rec], Paco Plaza‘s movie Veronica is getting a prequel with Sister Death (aka Hermana Muerte), and Netflix teased today that we can expect it to arrive sometime in October.

No specific release date has been revealed as of yet, but look for it to arrive on the streaming platform after Sister Death makes its world premiere at Sitges Film Festival. Sitges is slated to commence on October 5 and run through October 15, 2023, with Sister Death set as the opening feature.

The festival notes that the film was “shot almost entirely in the Royal Monastery of San Jerónimo de Cotalba.”
