The real Bonnie and Clyde may have died in 1933, but the legend of the couple's crime spree lives on in the form of songs, stories, and one groundbreaking movie. Arthur Penn's "Bonnie and Clyde" took Hollywood by storm when it hit theaters in 1967, generating controversy for its on-screen violence and sensuality -- and kick-starting nationwide conversations about who deserves to be the subject of a movie. While film fans still talk about these topics today, the movie's brutal final shootout feels mild compared to modern blood-soaked movie scenes.
Still, "Bonnie and Clyde" is a fantastic film, thanks in large part to its great cast. Warren Beatty plays cocky Clyde Barrow to Faye Dunaway's initially innocent Bonnie Parker, while actors Michael J. Pollard, Gene Hackman, and Estelle Parsons round out the Barrow gang. A young Gene Wilder made his big screen debut as one of Clyde's hostages, while Denver...

Veteran screenwriter Bo Goldman, who won Oscars for “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and Jonathan Demme’s “Melvin and Howard,” died Tuesday at the age of 90, his son-in-law, director Todd Field told The New York Times on Wednesday.
Goldman landed the job of adapting Ken Kesey’s book (along with Lawrence Hauben) after his script for “Shoot the Moon” impressed “Cuckoo’s Nest” director Miloš Forman.
Danny DeVito, who had a small role in “Cuckoo’s Nest,” told TheWrap, “Working with Bo was a dream. It was an honor knowing him.”
After winning a second Oscar for “Melvin and Howard,” he became one of the few screenwriters — along with Francis Ford Coppola and Billy Wilder — to take home Academy Awards for both original and adapted screenplay. He was nominated a third time for his script for Martin Brest’s “Scent of a Woman.”

Alden Ehrenreich has inhabited the role of Han Solo and, earlier this year, survived an encounter with the “Cocaine Bear.” But now he is venturing into even more uncharted territory, by writing, directing and starring in his very own short film, “Shadow Brother Sunday.”
The short concerns a down-on-his-luck brother (Ehrenreich) who, while attending a family celebration for his younger, successful actor brother (Nick Robinson), contemplates the ultimate betrayal – stealing his brother’s computer to sell to the paparazzi. From this scenario, Ehrenreich builds a rich world of uneasy family dynamics and long-simmering emotions. And it turns out he’s just as talented behind the camera as he is in front of it.
TheWrap spoke to Ehrenreich on the eve of the short film’s world premiere as part of the Tribeca Film Festival in New York; it’ll play throughout the week and is very much worth checking out.

Anyone who went into this weekend wondering if Dick Tracy knows how to use Zoom now has a definitive answer.
Late Friday night, Turner Classic Movies aired a mysterious new program called “Dick Tracy Special: Tracy Zooms In,” which features Warren Beatty reprising his role as the iconic detective from his 1990 film of the same name. Donning the character’s signature yellow coat and hat, Tracy participates in a Zoom call with TCM hosts Ben Mankiewicz and Leonard Maltin to give an update on his life and express his displeasure with Beatty’s film.
The three men watch several clips from the film together before they decide to call Beatty to settle Tracy’s complaints once and for all. Beatty then joins the call as himself, where he eventually reconciles with Tracy and they agree to have a more collaborative relationship in the event Beatty makes a sequel.

It finally happened. After a career full of egregious (and possibly cruel) snubs, Catherine O’Hara has been nominated by the Golden Globes. Her bid arrives at the perfect time, as she’s just coming off an Emmy victory for playing Moira Rose in the final season of Pop TV’s “Schitt’s Creek.” Does this nom make up for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association overlooking the veteran actress for her iconic roles in “A Mighty Wind,” “Best in Show,” “Home Alone” and “Temple Grandin,” among others? Not necessarily, but as Moira might proclaim, “One must champion oneself and say, ‘I am ready for this!'”

Jane Levy scored her first Golden Globe nomination this year for her eponymous role in “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” the latest in a long line of actors to be nominated for a TV musical and also continuing the trend for women headlining new comedy series. The Globes have nominated her for Season 1 of NBC’s musical comedy series, which aired from January to May 2020, while the show’s second season, which premiered last month, will be eligible for next year’s Globes.
In “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” Levy stars as Zoey Clarke, who can see and hear strangers, friends and family unknowingly sing about their intimate feelings to her through song and dance. It’s an emotional roller-coaster of a show that has become a hit with audiences. It wears its heart on its sleeve, especially when characters break out into the emotional musical numbers that highlight each episode.

Hulu’s “The Great” was one of the rare bright spots of 2020, and it’s all thanks to Elle Fanning‘s career-best performance as Catherine the Great. Equal parts laugh-out-loud comedy and riveting drama, the period program from Tony McNamara was recognized at the Emmys in writing and directing, but Fanning was strangely snubbed. Thankfully, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association righted that wrong when they nominated “The Great” for series, actress (Fanning) and actor (Nicholas Hoult).

After landing her first role almost three decades ago, Kaley Cuoco has finally earned her first Golden Globe nominations for playing the titular character on HBO Max’s “The Flight Attendant” as well as for serving as an executive producer on the series. While it is her first nomination at the Globes, she has gotten recognition from other major organizations in the past. Most notable of those were two bids for Comedy Supporting Actress at the Critics Choice TV Awards for “The Big Bang Theory,” where she tied with Eden Sher (“The Middle”) for the win in 2013.

Golden Globes nominee profile: Lily Collins (‘Emily in Paris’) brings a joie de vivre to Netflix hit
“Emily in Paris” became a big hit for Netflix when the first season dropped in October, thanks in part to the star turn at its center by Lily Collins. As the eponymous Emily, Collins is in full rom-com mode as a spirited young American woman adjusting to life in Paris and falling in love in the process. Viewers quickly binged “Emily in Paris” like devouring a box of macarons and turned it into an unexpected success, sustaining enough buzz to earn two Golden Globe nominations — one for Collins and another for the show in Best Comedy/Musical Series.
In the Best Comedy/Musical Actress category, Collins has some fierce competition that includes Kaley Cuoco (“The Flight Attendant”), Elle Fanning (“The Great”), Jane Levy (“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”) and Catherine O’Hara (“Schitt’s Creek”). From the Department of Anniversaries-You-Probably-Forgot: Four years ago today, Nov. 23, brought the release of Warren Beatty’s Howard Hughes film, Rules Don’t Apply.
Forty years in the making, the movie landed with a thud. Domestic box-office sales appear to have been under $4 million. Back in 2016, moviegoers—still coming to terms with the Trump presidency— weren’t in the mood to hear about another eccentric billionaire.
But that title was work of genius, years ahead of its time. Rules Don’t Apply. Who knew that Beatty’s picture, or at least its title, would set a theme for 2020, when the rules would pile up, but almost everyone would claim a personal exemption.

“Emily in Paris,” the new Netflix comedy series from “Sex and the City” creator Darren Star, has become a runaway hit for the streamer. It has struck a chord with audiences who are taken with the show’s sugary sweet escapism and plucky protagonist. With a flashy sensibility and an international flavor, there is a strong chance that the Golden Globes will take notice, especially for star Lily Collins.
She plays a young American woman who gets an exciting new opportunity as a social media marketer at her company’s French firm. As one might expect in the City of Love, she also finds herself caught up in a romance or two. Steve Bing, a Hollywood producer, writer and financier who famously invested in the Tom Hanks movie “The Polar Express,” has died by suicide. He was 55.
A spokesperson for the L.A. County Coroner’s Office told TheWrap that the office responded to a death in the 10000 block of Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles, and the man was pronounced dead at 1:10 p.m. According to TMZ, which was the first to report the news of Bing’s death, he jumped from the 27th floor of the building.
An individual at 10000 Santa Monica Boulevard confirmed to TheWrap that Bing had jumped from the tower.
The LAPD and L.A. County Coroner’s Office would not confirm the identification of the deceased or the cause of death. An individual who knew Bing said he had been depressed and acting bizarrely of late.

Steve Bing, a producer, philanthropist and screenwriter, has died by suicide in Los Angeles. He was 55.
Police and the coroner’s office said a man fitting his age jumped from a Century City apartment building on Monday. Sources told TMZ he had been suffering from depression.
Bing, who inherited a fortune of some $600 million from his grandfather, L.A. real estate developer Leo S. Bing, also contributed millions of dollars to Democratic political causes.
After receiving his inheritance at the age of 18, Bing dropped out of Stanford to try out the movie business. While he was still a high school student at Harvard-Westlake, he wrote the story for “Missing in Action” and later wrote an episode of “Married With Children.”
In 2003, he co-wrote the action comedy “Kangaroo Jack,” starring Anthony Anderson and Jerry O’Connell.
Bing invested some $80 million in “The Polar Express,” the Tom Hanks-voiced 2004 film directed by Robert Zemeckis.

Updated, with comment from former President Bill Clinton: Steve Bing, the film financier and philanthropist who backed hit movies from Robert Zemeckis’ The Polar Express and Beowulf to the Rolling Stones concert movie Shine a Light, has died.
According to law enforcement sources, Bing jumped from a Century City building at around 1 p.m. Monday. Following standard protocol, the Los Angeles Police Department would not confirm that the individual in question was Bing. However, the description of the man in his 50s who was found dead on the scene fits that of the producer.
Bing, also an influential political donor, was a real estate tycoon from a family with a rich history. In 2012, he pledged a $30 million legacy gift to the Motion Picture & Television Fund.
“For years Steve Bing has been one of the most philanthropic and generous people in our industry,” Jeffrey Katzenberg said at the time. “He has...

By April 2016, the warning lights were flashing red.
Warren Beatty had just finished “Rules Don’t Apply,” fulfilling a decades-long ambition of making a movie about Howard Hughes. He corralled the investors, wrote the screenplay, directed the film, and starred as Hughes. Now it was up to the distributors, Arnon Milchan’s Regency Entertainment and 20th Century Fox, to figure out how to sell it. Should it open wide, with a costly advertising campaign befitting its star’s pedigree? Or should it be treated like a niche independent film, with a limited release that could expand based on positive buzz?
To find out, Regency ordered two test screenings at the Arclight in Pasadena. The results were alarming. Moviegoers complained that the film dragged in the middle, and most of those under 40 had no idea who Hughes was. According to a report from the testing company, viewers described Hughes’ eccentric behavior as “frustrating,...

Warren Beatty's production company is being sued by Regency Entertainment for allegedly failing to pay back costs for the 2016 film Rules Don't Apply.
Regency claims it entered into talks with Beatty in 2013 to finance and distribute the Howard Hughes biopic, which was written by the star who starred in and directed the film. The distributor claims it agreed to incur substantial upfront costs which were to be recouped from the film's revenues. In addition to distributing the film, Regency says it also invested $2.5 million in the project.

Warren Beatty's new film, Rules Don't Apply, quietly snuck into UK cinemas last weekend. Here's our review...
Not unreasonably, Howard Hughes is a figure of fascination in cinema. From Leonardo DiCaprio in The Aviator to Terry O'Quinn in The Rocketeer, to characters who were inspired by him, like Willard Whyte in Diamonds Are Forever or Howard Stark in the Marvel cinematic universe, the billionaire businessman's on-screen influence feels fitting for his early status as a movie tycoon.
Now, Warren Beatty directs, produces, writes and stars in Rules Don't Apply, whose convention-busting title reflects the way in which it runs counter to other cinematic treatments by putting the spotlight on two of Hughes' many employees. Set during the tumultuous years of 1958 to 1964, the film focuses on virginal Virginia beauty queen Marla Mabrey (Lily Collins), an actress who's new to Hollywood, and Frank Forbes (Alden Ehrenreich), a chauffeur who drives her around.

For all the talk of foot-long fingernails, shower-avoidance, Kleenex boxes for shoes, the multiple viewings of Ice Station Zebra, his decades-long addiction to painkillers and a Citizen Kane-sized persona, Howard Hughes did manage early in his career to make a sizeable dent in movie history. As a producer he backed Howard Hawks’s landmark, censor-baiting, gangster classic Scarface, as well as that marvel of logistics and barminess, Hell’s Angels. Since Hughes stopped making movies himself, other people have started making movies about Hughes, especially since his mysterious death in 1976.

If there was any doubt that Underground Season 2 would be able to sustain the momentum of its incredible first season, then the premiere should set most at ease.
Underground Season 2 Episode 1 was misleading in that it tricked us into believing it was going at a slightly slower pace when, in actuality, a lot happened.
It wisely chose to tighten its narrative by only focusing on two plot points, while introducing us to new characters, and laying down the groundwork for the season.
I was genuinely surprised to discover that it had been a full five months since Rosalee and Boo escaped and Noah was captured. Given the fact that Noah was the leader of the infamous Macon 7, I expected (an attempt) at publicly executing him to have happened a lot sooner.

[Editor’s Note: This post is presented in partnership with Spectrum. Catch up on this year’s Awards Season contenders and the latest films On Demand. Today’s pick is “American Pastoral.”]
Anyone making their first film would be thrilled to have the tools at Ewan McGregor’s disposal. Shortly before entering the third decade of his acting career, McGregor seized the opportunity to direct a feature, “American Pastoral.”
McGregor’s good fortune began with his source material, the Philip Roth novel of the same name. Working from one of the more beloved pieces of American literature was a strong foundation, but also set expectations high. To pull off the story of a family unceremoniously thrust into the turmoil of rural American life in the heart of the 20th century, McGregor enlisted an impressive cast. Alongside Jennifer Connelly, Dakota Fanning, Uzo Aduba and David Strathairn, McGregor himself stars as “Swede” Levov, the patriarch of the crumbling family at the film’s center.
Also on board for this ambitious first project: composer extraordinaire Alexandre Desplat, whose score helps underline the sparse, dissonant feelings...

If you've read The Film Experience for any length of time beyond let's say, a week, you'll know that we live for eye candy. Three of the cinematic arts that most regularly provide this are, outside of beautiful movie stars in the acting categories, Production Design and Costume Design i.e. the Moulin Rouge! categories. We love these categories so much we have two weekly series for them, Daniel Walber's "The Furniture" and my own forthcoming costume series "Three Fittings".

Image Source: Getty / Michael Kovac Something that has been bothering us for a while now (besides, you know, climate-change deniers, bars that don't serve Rosé, and when something in the sale section isn't actually on sale) is the fact that Lily Collins, ubertalented actress and owner of some of the best brows in the business, doesn't have a British accent. That sounds like a nonsensical thing to be bothered by, because it is, but bear with us: even though her father is British and she did have an accent in the 2014 film Love, Rosie, Lily does not, in fact, have a British accent Irl. And we just feel like she should. Image Source: Getty / Todd Williamson Lily's father is, of course, the great English singer and former Genesis frontman Phil Collins. Her mother is Jill Tavelman, Phil's second wife and the former president of the Beverly Hills Women's Club. The 27-year-old was born in Surrey,...

It was a big night for La La Land at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards.
The original musical directed by Damien Chazelle won in every category that it was nominated for. This set a new record at the Golden Globes, as La La Land's seven wins is the most in this award show's history.
Other big winners tonight were the expected Casey Affleck for his performance in Manchester by the Sea, and Viola Davis' reprisal of her role in the film adaptation of Fences. However, the leading actress in a drama category had a pleasant surprise when legendary French actress Isabelle Huppert won for Elle over the expected win for Natalie Portman's portrayal of Jackie Kennedy in Jackie.

Bong Joon-Ho would like to let people know that his upcoming film, “Okja,” is not exactly a monster movie. While it might feature a massive beast, “It’s a very shy and introverted animal. It’s a unique animal that we’ve not seen before,” the director tells Entertainment Weekly.
The “Snowpiercer” helmer shared a handful of new photos from his upcoming adventure film, which feature Lily Collins as her character Red, running onto the streets of Manhattan, and a storyboard image of the sequence. Click here to see the photos.
“Red is part of a group of animal rights activists that figure into the story,” Joon-ho reveals. “On Wall Street, it’s the heart of capitalism. On the surface is a story about an animal, but it’s essentially a story about capitalism.”

After calendar grosses for September and October were unable to improve on 2015 numbers, November 2016 saw a +7.6% uptick compared to November 2015 as 264 movies grossed nearly $960 million. This also puts the Holiday 2016 season up +13% to date compared to Holiday 2015 with 209 movies combining to gross over $1.15 billion compared to $1 billion from 215 movies at the same point last year. Additionally, while August, September and October only saw two films (Suicide Squad and Sully) top $100 million at the domestic box office, four November releases have already topped the century mark, led by Disney and Marvel's Doctor Strange with $222.2 million and counting. As noted, Doctor Strange led November's releases after opening over the first weekend of the month with $85 million and has since gone on to gross over $222 million. Strange was one of two Disney releases in November, the other being Moana, to gross over $100 million domestically adding to the studio's six films that have grossed over $100 million this year alone.

The Golden Globe nominations are in and, as far as the movie side is concerned, there are plenty of nods for La La Land and Moonlight, as expected. But each year also brings a new crop of snubs and more than a few surprises. (Jonah Hill for War Dogs?!) Below, we break down all of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's inclusions and omissions that made us raise an eyebrow.

Surprise: Deadpool. The little antihero superhero that could made quite the showing at last night's Critics' Choice Awards, so maybe it shouldn't come as a surprise that it will now go head to head with Florence Foster Jenkins in the Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy race at the Globes. Ryan Reynolds also picked up a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical or Comedy...

La La Land leads the 2017 Golden Globe NominationsLa La Land leads the 2017 Golden Globe NominationsAdriana Floridia12/12/2016 11:21:00 Am
The Golden Globes are like the slightly more fun and less serious version of The Oscars.
This morning, Don Cheadle, Laura Dern, and Anna Kendrick announced the 2017 nominees, which are voted by the Hollywood Foreign Press. While this group of people is significantly smaller and tend to be a bit more mainstream than the Oscars, the Golden Globes still act as a major precursor to the biggest awards ceremony of the season.
The Golden Globes splits its movie categories into two: Drama and Musical/Comedy. This makes it slightly harder to predict the Oscars based on the Globes winners since two strong films come out on top after the Golden Globes. This is especially true of this year when La La Land, a musical, is thought to be the Oscars Best Picture frontrunner.

There’s a lurid fascination in “Jackie” about the eponymous First Lady’s Ptsd following JFK’s assassination. Chilean director Pablo Larraín (Oscar submissions “No” and “Neruda”) approached the movie as an outsider looking in, trying to get close to Mrs. Kennedy (Oscar contender Natalie Portman) as she tried to overcome her grief.
“It’s a horror film in a way because it tells the story of a woman, with a terrible trauma,” Larraín’s frequent editor Sebastian Sepulveda told IndieWire. “So Pablo made the right choice putting the camera very near to her. And the score too [by Mica Levi] helped a lot in establishing this melancholy mood.”
Cinematographer Stephane Fontaine (“Elle”) chose to use Super 16mm and a lot of held-held shots for both aesthetic and practical reasons. “You’ve got archival footage and two different kinds of period footage,” he said. “The 1962 White House Tour that she did for CBS,...

2016-11-28T06:28:03-08:00Weekend Box Office: 'Moana' Wins the Holiday Weekend
Disney's Moana had a strong five-day opening over the Thanksgiving holiday, modestly exceeding expectations and leading the box office through the weekend. The week's other new movies, however, failed to attract audiences, leaving the door open for hold-overs to stay near the front of the pack.
Moana took in $81 million for the five-day holiday, slightly ahead of estimates that had it earning around $75 million. That was enough to make it the second-biggest Thanksgiving movie of all time and keep it well ahead of all the competition for the week.
In second and third places were the two strongest among recent releases, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Marvel's Doctor Strange. Beasts took in $66 million over the five-day period, and Doctor Strange earned $19 million.
Brad Pitt's war drama Allied stumbled into fourth place with $18 million,...
