Before you stage a show, find talent
I saw Trevor: The Musical on Broadway in Nov 2021. I was in a theater maybe 1/3rd full and by intermission half had left because the performance was so bad.
The story could be powerful BUT the lack of vocal talent made this excruciating to listen to. I thought maybe I was wrong so when it came to Disney +, I gave it another shot. My mistake as it was as bad as I remembered.
Don't waste your time.

UGHHHH.....
Alright, as a gay male I am so sick of this ridiculous over the top portrayal of most gay men. With the huge drama moves and limp wrist of course. COMPLETELY stereotypical and ridiculous, I mean aren't most gays trying to combat being stereotyped, so why allow it to happen in movies portraying us? Storyline was SO predictable, the acting FAR too over the top and lazy. It's insulting to think that in 2022 this is what passes as "entertainment" and it's also insulting to think that any gay person would find this entertaining or appropriate. Garbage to the extreme.
Most real coming out story ever
As someone who grew up in the eighties I have to say this story was pretty spot on with how it portrayed coming out in the eighties. It was also nice to see a story where unlike Love, Simon and Heartstoppers, the character is really conflict and confused about what his newfound feelings meant.
Take away the musical and a lot of the plot rings true about coming out in the '80's and you'll understand why the Trevor Project is named after this Trevor. This Trevor is based on a story that was written back then. While they did touch on AIDS, since these are middle school kids, that wasn't the focus of the story.
Good acting, great story, great songs.

Okay?
The singing was not good at all. Character Trevor was good, but his singing......
Even Diana Ross's singing was bad , my god. Ouch
Lighting and costumes were fine. Plot was fine as well, not groundbreaking tho. The songs were almost all the same. There was not one song that I had great thoughts about.
Its not a musical that I'm gonna watch again...

Still worth watching and enjoying (and learning from)
Like many other reviewers have said, the vocals-especially from the lead-are often pitchy. There are moments that are rough enough to make you wince.
But if you can look past that, Trevor: The Musical is both entertaining and deeply important. Until we reach a world where the message of anti-bullying no longer needs to be told, this story remains essential.
For those who don't know, Trevor began as an independent film, which later grew into The Trevor Project-one of the most impactful organizations supporting LGBTQ youth today. This musical, flaws and all, carries that legacy forward.
And while the vocals are a weak spot, the acting shines. The lead actor-just 14 years old-was on stage for nearly every scene, and his performance was moving and authentic. The emotional depth he brought to the role more than made up for the missed notes.
Truthfully, the pitch problems seem to start in the writing room, with songs that even trained singers would struggle to deliver-let alone teenage boys going through puberty.
TL;DR: The singing sucks, but the story and acting make it worth watching.
