The background news report during the opening action is heard, covering a developing story about the stock market dropping, and that two senior investment executives had been found murdered and another (who turned out to be Jeff) was missing. Jeff has apparently snapped (possibly from the stress of the stock market fall and the resulting negative impact on his life), killed his colleagues and his wife, and kidnapped his two daughters. During his escape, they crash, find a cabin, and Jeff seems resigned to killing himself. However, he knows that will leave his daughters to suffer death by exposure, so he decides to kill them first. Mama lifts him up and breaks his neck before he has the chance.

Soon an updated report states that Jeff killed two of his colleagues before returning home to murder his wife and kidnap his two daughters, After disappearing, Jeff's brother Lucas is still funding a search for his brother and nieces "5 years later".

Jeff is also shown to be on some sort of medication, as we see him shaking his pill bottle only to realise it is empty. This could possibly suggest a mental disorder, thus further explaining why he took the actions mentioned above.
