The Swedish thriller, A Day and a Half premiered on Netflix in 2023, so is it worth watching or not? In A Day and a Half, a film based on a true story that filmmaker and star Fares Fares read years before he wrote the film, a police officer is placed in an unbelievable situation. At the start of the movie, a man named Artan (Alexej Manvalov) walks into a doctor's office and demands to see his ex-wife, Louise (Alma Pysti), a nurse there. His tone is a little more than threatening and when he whips out a gun, there's no doubt he's not a great guy.
Taking his wife hostage, Artan demands a tinted car and a driver. The Swedish police send in the only hostage negotiator they have on staff, Lukas, played by Fares Fares, who American audiences will know as Ishmael in The Wheel of Time series. Artan...

Director Fares Fares’ film, A Day and a Half, also features a captivating performance by him. The film was centered around the couple Artan and Louise, but it was the character of Lukas that actually stood out. He entered the film when one bad move could have resulted in a disaster, but his calm demeanor and laser-beam focus prevented a tragedy. Artan was in a volatile state of mind, and he had Louise hostage. Without knowing his intentions, Lukas carefully examined the situation and tried to do his duty as a policeman. Lukas is a character that is fascinating because he defies expectations and conventions. One might expect him to be a clever cop, ready to neutralize the threat the first chance he gets. But Lukas actually understood that he had to be patient and not try to be the hero. Let’s take a deep dive into Fares Fares...

The new film A Day and a Half is a story about a man and his quest to see his daughter again. He goes about it in one of the most desperate ways possible. Artan is the man in question, and his ex-wife Louise bears the brunt of the situation. One might think that Artan is the villain and Louise is an innocent victim, but as we get into the story, the thriller morphs itself into a very complex family drama, and we witness that there is more to every element than meets the eye. It is the extenuating circumstances that are to blame. The couple, Artan and Louise, are facing their own individual struggles, and there is just no way for communication to happen between the two. It is this breakdown that the film captures very well. The characters of Louise and Artan are so intertwined that they warrant a closer look.

The beginning of a film often teaches us how to watch that particular movie. What to expect and how to enjoy the story Some movies are quite straightforward in their storytelling. They remove all the extra fat from the plot and just plunge us into the action. The new Swedish film A Day and a Half, by debutant director Fares Fares, is never interested in setting up characters or the backstory. It kicks off right in the middle of the plot. There is a thrill to this kind of approach to narrative. And surely, the audience is hooked. At least I was. But is this the only vision through which the film could have delivered its maximum impact?
