The rights to do this American adaption of The Raid: Redemption (2011) were sold partially to fund the original film's sequel The Raid 2 (2014).
This is the first Indonesian movie adapted by Hollywood.
Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Aaron Paul, Luke Bracey, Tom Hardy, Michael Fassbender, Colin Farrell, Hugh Jackman, Jeremy Renner, Garrett Hedlund, Jai Courtney, Henry Cavill, Jack O'Connell, Chris Pine, Chris Pratt, Sam Claflin, Luke Evans, Ryan Reynolds, Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, Joel Edgerton, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jon Bernthal were considered roles.
Frank Grillo was attached to star in the film, before eventually leaving, and then returning again when his production partner, Joe Carnahan, came on board to direct. Neither Grillo nor Carnahan are officially involved as of 2022.
