2023: 34-year-old photographer Alexander Jaromin, who has been living in Athens for 20 years under the BKA's witness protection program, is haunted by traumatic memories of an attack on his family. When he discovers clues and a DVD in his mother's estate that cast doubt on his belief that his father, Frank, and his sister were shot by Serbian nationalists in 2003, he uses the DVD, which apparently shows a secret operation by agents in Baghdad in 2003, to search Berlin for Ivo Rebic, a former Bundeswehr comrade of his father, whom he believes to be the actual murderer. This brings BND agent Steffen Graf, who has been monitoring Alexander Jaromin for years, into the picture.

2003: To prevent the impending war in Iraq, the BND, with the help of a team of agents led by sniper Frank Jaromin, is tasked with bringing a key witness from Baghdad who can prove that dictator Hussein does not possess weapons of mass destruction. Steffen Graf and his BND colleague Josef Bardeaux, as members of a secret group of German and US politicians, decide to prevent this mission. 2023: While Alexander Jaromin tracks down his father's alleged murderer and discovers that his father, Frank, must have worked for the BND, not the Bundeswehr, Graf and Bardeaux hire two assassins to use any means necessary to obtain the Baghdad DVD.

2003: While BKA investigator Hanne Lay tries in vain to expose BND informant Curveball as a liar, Frank Jaromin becomes embroiled in an intrigue in Baghdad - with fatal consequences. 2023: Alexander Jaromin is rescued from a dangerous situation by Ivo Rebic, whom he believes to be the murderer of his father and sister. Hanne Lay takes over the investigation of this incident because she finds clues at the crime scene about the events in Baghdad, which she was supposed to verify at the time. Since the Baghdad DVD has been deleted from the cloud, Alexander Jaromin, with the help of Iranian activist Simin Najeri, with whom he is hiding, has the data storage device sent to him from Athens. Meanwhile, Ivo Rebic has a surprising encounter.

2023: Iranian opposition figure Taraneh Rahman escapes Tehran with the help of Josef Bardeaux. After a meeting with the conspirators, which Simin Najeri translates, Bardeaux breaks with Graf, arguing that a policy against Iraq like the one in 2003 is no longer appropriate. Meanwhile, Hanne Lay has managed to locate Alex Jaromin's hiding place, preventing the newly arrived Baghdad DVD from falling into the hands of the killers. She is assisted in this by Frank Jaromin, who shoots his son to clear the way. 2003: When Frank Jaromin refuses to take responsibility for Baghdad and secretly conducts his own investigation, Steffen Graf decides to kill the sniper. Meanwhile, Hanne Lay is prevented by her client, Andreas von Goerden, from investigating the suspicion that the Baghdad DVD is fake. The Iraq War begins.

2023: In his hideout near Berlin, Frank Jaromin tries in vain to explain to his son why he had to lie to the family about his real work for the BND for many years and then go into hiding to protect them after his faked death. Although the Baghdad DVD confirms that he was framed, he refuses to cooperate with Hanne Lay. Pressed by Hanne Lay, Andreas von Goerden admits that both of them failed back then and reveals the names of the conspirators. Meanwhile, Steffen Graf tries to locate the men's hideout. When Alex angrily leaves his father that night and secretly contacts both Simin Najeri and Hanne Lay, he puts Steffen Graf and his killers on his trail.

Alex Jaromin receives a call that Simin Najeri, who is working as a translator for Bardeaux in Luxembourg, has been kidnapped by Steffen Graf. He offers to release her in exchange for the Baghdad DVD. In Luxembourg, father and son discover they have been lured into a trap when Alex is arrested by Steffen Graf while handing over the Baghdad DVD. In exchange for his son, Frank Jaromin is to act as a sniper and kill the renegade Josef Bardeaux in front of the convention center.
