Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson say the most important lesson they drew from running “Broad City” was learning that friendship and business thrive on firm boundaries.
Speaking on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast this week, the comedy duo explained that by season three of their Comedy Central hit they scheduled a brief “after‑school club” each morning—ten minutes devoted only to personal chat—before launching into writers‑room decisions, a practice they credit with keeping conflict off‑camera.
Glazer recalled that during production they rarely socialized after hours “because we were already living together at work,” a choice Jacobson said preserved the spark that first drew them together at New York’s Upright Citizens Brigade in 2006.
The conversation has resurfaced as both creators navigate increasingly separate careers. Glazer, 38, scored a modest box‑office hit last year with the pregnancy comedy “Babes,” which she co‑wrote and starred in,...

Growing up, I would always notice the Witchcraft movies sitting on the shelves of my local video stores. I was intrigued by them and the fact that this horror franchise was steadily pumping out sequels, but I never rented them. It wasn’t until 2011 that I spent thirteen weeks viewing my way through the entire series, one installment a week… and that was quite an experience, as this is one crazy series. In 2016, the franchise grew by three more sequels, with parts 14, 15, and 16 being filmed back-to-back-to-back. Now, prolific filmmaker Dustin Fergsuon, who has over 150 movies to his name, has announced that he’s making the next sequel, with Witchcraft Xvii: The Initiation scheduled to start filming on July 2nd with Ivy Smith taking on the lead role of Maya Reed. Smith’s previous credits include Lust, Magic, and the Witches’ Sabbath and the Full Moon productions Attack of the 50 Foot CamGirl and Giantess Battle Attack.

Family secrets, a love triangle, and self-discovery are just part of the creative tapestry in The Life List, an endearing tale full of “aw shucks” that’s designed to warm hearts. It will, even though the film struggles to land in any one genre. It’s a rom-com, it's a tragic family drama, it’s a mission-driven story with a goal in mind, it’s a coming-of-age story, it’s a "yas queen" girlboss flick, it's… not quite sure what it is. It’s all that and filled with attractive actors, so there's great eye candy all around. And there’s Connie Britton, playing a matriarch determined to make sure her daughter gets her life on track. This film is loaded with warm fuzzies, and the ever-reliable Britton is a believable emotional boost, adding an extra touch of warmth in a story already overflowing with it.

For Pamela Adlon, starting to watch a new show can be a treacherous thing.
“I have Ocd so if I start something, I’m screwed. I know I’ve got to see this through,” the multi-hyphenate explained, kicking off the jury press conference for this year’s Series Mania.
Adlon, a multiple-Emmy nominee for her writing and acting work on FX’s Better Things and Louie, has been binging on some the best in global TV as head of of the international jury at the international television festival, which runs through March 28 in Lille, France. She joined her fellow jurors — Downton Abbey and Better Call Saul director Minkie Spiro, award-winning French actress Karin Viard (The Bélier Family, Polisse), U.S.-Argentine actor Ignacio Serricchio (Bones, The Young and the Restless), and French musician and composer Victor Le Masne — to talk up the small screen highlights of this year’s competition.

A seemingly unshakable female friendship is put to the test in director Delaney Buffett’s humorous and surprisingly believable comedy, Adult Best Friends.Buffett shares screenwriting credit with lifelong pal, producer and co-star Katie Corwin (City of Angels). The two met in middle school, in fact; Buffet once said they were spirited 10-year-old girls who “already had their periods.” Bonding instantly, the duo surfed life’s highs and lows together before coming to a crossroads in their early 30s. Could their childhood friendship withstand adulthood?

Love, laughs, and labor pains — these movies prove pregnancy is the ultimate plot twist.
I watched the new Amy Schumer comedy,“Kinda Pregnant” with my wife last night and it was (on the whole) a good time. First, it’s actually funny and second, it pays off the high concept in all the ways you want it to (more on this shortly). I love romantic comedies, and so it got me thinking about all the other rom-com pregnancy movies out there. Not that many get made (Hollywood is a male-dominated industry), but there are some excellent movies among the ones that did. Here’s my list of the top 7 pregnancy rom-coms you can stream right now.

Universal and Blumhouse’s “Wolf Man” reboot and the Keke Palmer-led comedy “One of Them Days” will contend for the top slot on box office charts over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.
Regardless of which lands in first, neither are expected to break out in what’s shaping up to be another quiet weekend for North American cinemas. “Wolf Man” is poised to open to $17 million to $21 million from 3,300 venues over the four-day frame, while “One of Them Days” looks to collect $8 million to $13 million from 2,650 theaters between Friday and Monday.
Universal and Sony each canceled the premieres of “Wolf Man” and “One of Them Days” due to the fires and extreme winds in Los Angeles. In terms of moviegoing, though, attendance doesn’t appear to be affected by the devastating wildfires that continued to ravage though parts of Los Angeles, one of the biggest theatrical markets in the country.

There are 323 feature films eligible for the upcoming Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday, though a whopping 36% of those – 116 feature films – are not eligible for consideration in the Best Picture category.
The discrepancy between films that have qualified for the top category and films that are eligible in other categories comes either because the filmmakers did not attempt to qualify – likely the case for several documentary, animated or international films. Or because of new eligibility rules that require Best Picture candidates to meet additional benchmarks for diversity and inclusion. This is the second year that Representation and Inclusion Standards (Raise) have been enforced, though they did not appear to disqualify any serious contenders in the category.
Among titles excluded from Best Picture consideration are Andrea Arnold’s “Bird,” starring Barry Keoghan, Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut “Woman of the Year,” Michael Keaton’s directorial debut “Knox Goes Away,...

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2024, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
No matter what 2025 brings, 2024 in cinema felt like a year of unprecedented freedom and resistance in global and domestic affairs. In many ways, the anxieties expressed in 2024 reminded me of 1999. Culture can be a canary in the coal mine.
The year’s best and most essential films chose to fight back and comment on the “machine.” This year’s boldest films included sprawling epics, essential documentaries, personal stories, and a surprising number of unhinged works of fantasy. There were a lot of funny movies in 2024, but most of them weren't what we'd call 'comedies.' There were funny action movies, funny dramas, funny horror movies, funny thrillers, and so on, but not many straight-up comedies. One film, however, embraced the very roots of comedy, combining silent slapstick with very early animated comedy to great effect, and it's now free to watch basically everywhere. That would be the absurdist, utterly wacky delight, Hundreds of Beavers.
Hundreds of Beavers is co-written by its lead star Ryland Brickson Cole Tews, who gives one of the best physical performances in years. It's a good thing he was a co-writer, because most actors wouldn't do what he's subjected to in director Mike Cheslik's film. The movie is a microbudget passion project made for $150,000 over the course of many years; actual filming took place in the subzero winters of Wisconsin and Michigan...

Michelle Buteau, comedian and star of the underrated 2024 film Babes, slammed fellow comedian Dave Chappelle over the anti-trans rhetoric rampant in the comedy routines. The Survival of the Thickest star returned to Netflix for her second special, where she didn't shy away from addressing her fellow Netflix stand-up.
Per Variety, Buteau unleashed on Chappelle in her latest Netflix special, Michelle Buteau: A Buteau-ful Mind at Radio City Music Hall, after telling a story about her "Black lesbian friend." Noting the variety of reactions from the audience – some laughing, some uncomfortable – Buteau said comedians should be able "to tell jokes and stories and not disparage a whole community," adding, "We can do that. We can make it funny... We just have to work at it, right? So, if you ever run into Dave Chappelle, can you let him know that sh-t? I don't think he knows that sh-t."

Deadpool & Wolverine is the second highest-grossing movie of 2024, with $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office, but does that mean it should have a chance at an Academy Award? Franchise star, producer, and co-writer Ryan Reynolds thinks so and is making a case for it. As with every movie released in 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine is beginning its "For Your Consideration" campaign ahead of the upcoming 97th Academy Awards, whose nominees will be announced on Jan. 17, 2025.
While speaking with IndieWire, Reynolds explained why he believes Deadpool & Wolverine is worth consideration for an Academy Award, particularly Best Adapted Screenplay. Reynolds believes there is a genre bias against the film, not because it is a superhero movie but as a comedy, which many people dismiss as not being as important as dramatic fiction or that most of the movie was improvised. Yet Reynolds believes the movie's ability to balance both comedy and...

If the only stand-up comedy specials you’d ever watched came out in 2024, you might think there are only two kinds: ones that are about being a parent, and ones that are about never being a parent. Are you the kind of comic who’s figured out how to talk about your kids without seeming like you just walked out of a Jim Belushi sitcom, or the kind who’s had to defend your choice not to continue your family name? You have to decide, dammit, Deciiiiiiiide.

As Wicked hit theaters, it's interesting to see Disney's surprisingly long history with the Oz books!
The world of Oz is about to see a new spark in popularity. After two decades as one of the biggest musical hits in the world, Wicked is about to hit the big screen in part one of a two-part epic. It's a revisionist take on the property showing how Elphaba aka the Wicked Witch of the West, wasn't that bad a person and her friendship with Glinda, the Good Witch of the North.
The movie is from Universal and seems set to become a major box office hit. Yet there was a time when it looked like Disney might get their toes into the property and the history of Disney and Oz is fascinating to see!
The early Oz foray
The early days of moviemaking were tricky, yet was always interested in adapting some beloved books.

The intriguing 2073, a hybrid documentary and science fiction thriller produced by Neon and directed by Asif Kapadia, will land in theaters on December 27, 2024, it has been revealed. The short also inspired Terry Gilliam's 1995 film 12 Monkeys, which starred Bruce Willis, Brad Pitt, and Madeleine Stowe. The release date has now been revealed courtesy of Variety, and you can check out the film's official logline is as follows:

Sebastian Stan's role as former President and current Presidential candidate Donald Trump certainly came as a surprise to some, but now that the film is playing in limited theaters, it's performing roughly as expected. The Apprentice recently crossed $5 million at the worldwide box office, with $3.3 million coming from domestic earnings and $1.7 million coming from overseas. If the film can scrape together another $500,000 or so, it will move into the top 100 movies at the 2024 domestic box office, surpassing The Front Room, Perfect Days, and Babes. The Apprentice boasts a reported production budget of $16 million, which it has still yet to earn even one-third of at the box office, and with numbers slowing down more and more by the day, it may close out its theatrical run as a net loss for Briarcliff Entertainment.

Shannon McMullen officially joined the cast of The Bold and the Beautiful on September 30. She plays the role of Willow, the top model at Forrester Creations.
Her character immediately connects with Will Spencer, the new man on campus. Fans want to know more about the beauty that’s been gracing daytime television.
Forrester’s Top Model
Shannon McMullen portrayed Willow on September 30 and October 2. She returned during the week of October 7th, when she had lunch with Will (Crew Morrow) and his brother Liam (Scott Clifton). Willow is joined by fellow model Kingsley (Jade Coatsworth). The two get an earful about Liam’s love life.
Will and Willow already make a cute couple. Their names are fitting, too. It’s unclear whether McMullen will appear in future episodes. She’s just one of the many young models who turned Will’s head. This was the reason why he went for the intern position.

Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton's beautiful and dark fairy tale starring Johnny Depp, is finding streaming success after Hulu added it to their library just in time for the spooky season. The 1990 film is getting love from new audiences after Burton appears to have returned to the Hollywood spotlight with major recent successes like Wednesday and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Edward Scissorhands is climbing high into Hulu's Top 15 movies. Today, it falls behind more modern films like Hold Your Breath, Babes and Blood for Dust. Nevertheless, its resurgence during Halloween is not a coincidence. The film, starring Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder as a very unlikely couple, is a modern take on fairy tale tropes in a fantasy world that only Burton could create. It's the perfect Halloween feature.

With Tim Burton's recent box-office hit Beetlejuice Beetlejuice dominating theaters, many fans at home are revisiting his and Johnny Depp's first collaboration in Edward Scissorhands. The 1990 movie starred Depp as an unfinished artificial boy who is adopted by a suburban family and tries to fit in with the community to much difficulty. Earning $86 million on a budget of $20 million, Edward Scissorhands was a critical success and stands out as one of the director's finest works.
Amid the filmmaker's recent resurgence with the back-to-back successes of Wednesday and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Burton's Edward Scissorhands is now gaining heat on Hulu. At the time of writing, the movie, which serves as Burton and frequent collaborator Depp's first pairing, currently sits at the No. 4 spot on the platform's Top 15 Movies. The 2009 raunchy comedy, The Hangover seemingly appeals to folks of all ages, according to one of the movies stars. Per Entertainment Weekly, Ed Helms, known for his role on The Office, played Stu in the movie, and recently went on Dany Carvey and David Spades Fly on the Wall podcast and said even old ladies love the gross-out film.
I was in a hotel lobby maybe a month or a few weeks or two after it came out, Helms explained. There was a group of old ladies, like literally grandmothers, sitting around talking about bits from the movie and how funny it was. I remember thinking, Okay, this, and then of course you had all the frat boys that love it, he said.

The crowds of film sellers and buyers are still rolling into Toronto from Venice and Telluride, but the puck dropped Thursday night on the acquisitions marketplace with the premiere of Nutcrackers.
David Gordon Green has taken a detour from genre to serve up a Ben Stiller-starrer that proved a crowdpleaser in two opening-night showings.
That kind of movie — with promising premises with stars and directors with proven track records — is all over the schedule. There is a lot to like in this 2024 TIFF acquisitions market. But I’ve just come from an L.A. visit and cannot recall as bleak a black cloud hangover from the twin strikes of last year. It will take time for the business to recover, and this caution could factor into the dealmaking. Also on the minds of distributors is how elusive box office has become. Comparable films to the ones on sale here...

Comedy creator Ilana Glazer recently opened up about their evolving understanding of gender. In a recent interview, Glazer said their pregnancy experience shed light on both their masculine and feminine sides. This realization has prompted Glazer to use they/she pronouns and feel more authentic in how they present themselves.
Glazer co-created and starred in the Comedy Central series “Broad City” from 2014 to 2019. In the interview, Glazer reflected on how viewers saw feminist themes in the show, which surprised them. Glazer said they “hadn’t even thought about it like that” when learning it was viewed as feminist.
An episode from 2016 featured a cameo from then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton during the heated race against Donald Trump. Glazer acknowledged mixed reactions but wanted Clinton to win. While not friends with Clinton, Glazer said she sits “somewhere in the middle” of liking and disliking her as a person.
Comedy is central to Glazer’s work.

Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau star in Pamela Adlon’s exploration of motherhood and friendship. Here’s our Babes review.
Pregnancy is a juicy topic for filmmakers. You can play it for laughs, mine it for horror or simply showcase what an unbelievable process it is to grow a real human being inside you. Like pregnancy, motherhood is another popular subject for storytellers, as is friendship.

Pregnancy is a juicy topic for filmmakers. You can play it for laughs, mine it for horror or simply showcase what an unbelievable process it is to grow a real human being inside you. Like pregnancy, motherhood is another popular subject for storytellers, as is friendship.

Broad City’s Ilana Glazer and stand-up Michelle Buteau play two best friends going through pregnancy in this raunchy comedy from actor-turned-director Pamela Adlon. Crackling with comic chemistry, it’s frequently very funny and pulls off what is essentially a clever riff on the usual rom-com dynamic, but it oddly shies away from its potentially emotional moments, preferring to undercut them with laughs instead.
The film is set in present-day New York, where two best friends – single yoga instructor Eden (Glazer) and married-with-a-kid dentist Dawn (Buteau) – still get together regularly, despite now living in different boroughs that are several subway trains apart. As the film begins, they’re indulging in their annual Thanksgiving ritual of attending a movie together, but that’s cut short when heavily...

After defining goofy millennial aimlessness with her beloved sitcom Broad City, the writer-actor is facing up to motherhood with new film Babes. But don’t worry: she hasn’t grown up too much
Ilana Glazer is trying to think of films about pregnancy and early parenthood that aren’t told from a man’s perspective. “There’s Knocked Up, but that’s about Seth Rogen. And there’s Nine Months, but that’s about Hugh Grant. Three Men and a Baby cracks me up because it’s like, three?!” says the 37-year-old, with comically perfect levels of incredulity (cracking me up in the process).
Glazer – best known as co-creator of the seminal millennial sitcom Broad City – is making a serious point: there are outrageously few movies about birth and babies that centre on the female experience. The comedian’s attempt to rectify this, however, has taken the form of a distinctly unserious film: in fact,...

Amazon is adding another actor to its expanding Bosch universe.
John Carroll Lynch has joined the third show in the franchise, centering on LAPD detective Renée Ballard (to be played by Maggie Q). The untitled series, which will stream on Prime Video, follows Ballard as she takes on running the department’s cold case division — an underfunded, all-volunteer unit with a huge case load. The character has appeared in several of Bosch author Michael Connelly’s novels.
Lynch (American Horror Story, Big Sky) will play Thomas Laffont, a retired former partner of Ballard’s who comes back to help her run the the department. He’s a kind, seasoned detective and crack interrogator.
The spinoff — one of two additional shows set in the same world as both Bosch and Bosch: Legacy — will be set up in the season three finale of the latter series, which is likely to premiere later this year.
