    What happened to the characters?

    First off, big fan here.

It's a riddle to me how the writers managed to turn almost every previously lovable character with their unique flaws and strenghts, and learning-curves, into empty, hateable characters in this season.

It doesn't feel like the previous seasons ever happened in terms of character development. The story continus, but everybody seems to be stuck back in their mid-first season states. You'd think the more intimate episodes and bonding moments of the last season would have a lasting impact on the individual lcharacters, yet it feels like it was all for nothing and whoever is running the show turned it into an episodic crap fest chock-full of stereotypes.

Genuinely funny moments and very cringy moments (the bad kind, some even borderline bigoted) take turns. Why is this necessary? The second season was a good continuation and the third season started promising. There was a real connection between characters. All in all the writing is on an almost insulting level now for various reasons. Most importantly though it seems like all they're doing at this point is make it bigger and fuller and louder and more annoying and obscenely narrowsighted, to not leave a minute of breathing room for developing a story, or letting viewer process it.

This is sad, I am sad, downrate me all you want but this was one of my favorite shows. I will continue watching it, but not be invested in it anymore. I do hope for a fourth season, and a change in "marketing".

    So disaapointed .....

I was so looking forward to the finale and in the beginning it was going in the right direction and then I am not sure what happened. The entire last half of the episode were full of plot holes. Every seance literately had a plot hole. It felt like they got a bigger budget than they were planning on so they spent the money on effects. If we like the show turned into a syfi movie. Like so many comedies , and I consider this a comedy 1st that is I am sure why most people watch it it seemed to fall in love with it own writing and felt like every scene had to be some personal revelation. But really without going into detail and spoilers the last 20 minutes was just out of control.

    Snowball

More good work from Alan as Harry, plenty of good set ups for him to clown around with,so it was good to see the final episode of series 3 stay true to the central character and main topic. Series three has definitely been the better for it, just as series 2 suffered greatly for drifting from it.

There was even some decent plot with Kate strategizing how to save her lost child, but things did get a bit chaotic and hard to follow on the ship, but luckily some good comedy opportunities for Harry while there.

The last 3rd of this episode just flung as many plot elements at the screen as it could and it became hard to focus and take it all in and make sense of it.

Maybe they're not getting renewed and they wanted to go out with a bang?

Personally I thought series 3 on the whole was a solid step in the right direction, and reclaimed a lot of lost ground from series 2. I was going to abandon ship at the end of series 2 and a lot of people have noted as much in their series reviews. It felt like a completely different show and not one I would have ever bothered watching, but if there is a series 4 and they can keep up the good work they did to make series 3 mostly fun and funny, I'll come back for more.

    Homecoming

The shortened season three was a lot better than season two. The latter was always treading water searching for a main plot.

This was better but the finale was messy. Trying to set up season four and losing focus.

Harry gets an unexpected ally in Joseph Rainier. The latter realises that the Grey's plans for earth will make inhabitable for hybrids as well.

Together will Harry, Bridget and Asta. They want to stop D'arcy from blowing the Grey's spaceship up. Only for Kate turning up on the ship as well to look for her daughter.

I expected half the residents of Patience to show up at one point. Instead they decided to to do a Robocop tribute act.

It was certainly a bizarre finale with the twist not being that much of a surprise.

    Everything Everywhere All at Once

I mean this finale is all over the place. So many story lines happen at the same time in a chaotic manner. These two final episodes would have been much better split into four episodes.

Part of the messiness is there to provide cover for the final plot twist, but I saw it coming a mile away thanks to Chekhov's Gun. Next time, the writes might want to go with "smart writing" instead. Another reason for the messiness is that the writers want to conclude the existing arcs in case the series is going to be cancelled, while simultaneously creating new plots for a next season if the show is going to be renewed. There really isn't enough screentime to do both.

Here are the story lines that I can recall off the top of my head from the last two episodes:

    • The main bomb arc (Kind of got cancelled.)
    • Kate's abductions and baby rescue (Would have better take place in the penultimate episode. Otherwise now the protagonists are gonna blow up all the kidnapped human babies on the Grey's "ship". Kate and Ben also forgot Max could see aliens. They didn't believe him back then, but now they should.)
    • D'arcy being a loose cannon, again (Hope I got the capitalization right. Lol)
    • Liv, Mike, Lena (Why devote screentime in the finale if their investigation did not go anywhere in this episode?)
    • Bridget, Sahar, Max (Why are Bridget and Sahar reintroduced now? Also the exploding thing isn't cool.)
    • Asta and Jay (Asta should have tried parenting for once, instead of sending Jay away, again. But now it is depicted as wholesome.)
    • Joseph (Needs more time to elaborate his motivations and... his recovery.)
    • Asta and her mom
    • D'arcy and her parents
    • The general doing stuff
    • Alien Tracker and his son (Why are they even reintroduced to the show?)
    • The plot twist

Most of these plots were being built up throughout the whole season. It is sad to see the writers speedrunning their conclusions. Each of them deserves more screentime to do justice. If there is not enough budget, the extras (in the order of my above list) can easily be cut.

Nonetheless, this season is rather enjoyable to watch. Definitely an improvement over the last season. Now that the main casts are all aware that alien exists (to a certain extent), I look forward to seeing how the dynamics will play out in the next season.

    • Trivia
During the scene where Harry, Asta, and Joseph are discussing the bomb Joseph mentions that the "Greys" have left him out of the plan for Earth. Harry says, "like when everyone is invited to a party except you". Asta counters with, "oh God, I thought you didn't want to go to Kayla's birthday". Harry then mispronounces Kayla's name as "Kaylala". Kaylala is the actual name of the actress who plays Asta's daughter Jay.
