The Substitute

4/10

I like Jon Gabrus and I really wanted to like this

I only watched one episode (number two) so don't give this tooo much weight. I'm a fan of Jon from Comedy Bang Bang and other improv podcasts. He does some really funny characters and is genuiely brilliant at improv comedy. Sadly, on this show, his talents are totally wasted. He goes way, way over the top for the entire show, screaming the whole time. When he actually wants to hype the students up, there's no next level to go to. He just hoarsely screams what he's trying emphasize, and it actually feels uncomfortable. He comes across like a real-life version of Chris Farley's famous Matt Foley character--trying to yell harder than he's capable of, and not impressing any of the students he's talking to. From what I've seen outside of this show, Jon has a quick, sharp wit, and a keen sense of humor, so I blame the producers or directors, or whoever pressured him to go so over the top.

Also, the trivia questions were way too easy, Whoever buzzed in first won every time. _And_ I didn't believe for a second it was a real high school classroom with students who were actually surprised to be on a quiz show.

I'll admit, I would have watched more of this disaster, but the show seems to have flown entirely under the radar of almost everyone. It's nearly impossible to pirate, even. That's probably for the best, though ;(

tl;dr: this show had a _lot_ of problems
