Much like Teletoon's other teenager cartoons, 6Teen (2004) and Stoked (2009), Detentionaire was ultimately cancelled due to its performance in the United States. When Cartoon Network bought the rights to air Detentionaire in the United States, they only aired it on their app with no promotion. Furthermore, the episodes were aired out of order, and were heavily censored with only 22 of the episodes being aired on their app. This led to a low performance in the United States and ultimately, its cancellation.
The creator of the series, Daniel Bryan Franklin revealed that the series was originally planned to run until the characters reached university.
The creators of the series, Charles Johnston and Daniel Bryan Franklin, revealed many of the characters and situations are based on their own high school experience.
The creator of the series Charles Johnston revealed that if Detentionaire was not cancelled, the Serpent would have moved in with the Ping family, and the show would have had a more sitcom-esque vibe.
Many often say that Detentionaire is similar to shows such as 6Teen (2004) and Total Drama (2007), and coincidentally, co-creator Charles Johnston has written episodes for both those shows.
