Welcome to the daily briefing, move along and take a seat, quick as you can, please. As you may see from the ludicrously overpopulated suspect wall behind me, we’re on the lookout for someone very special here. These particular characters are all known killers, in that they’ve been killing it on screen as British TV detectives, some of them for decades. We’re here to find their boss, the kingpin, the very best of the best.
Intelligence says that this character is British, so please discount your Columbos, Sarah Lunds, Maigrets, Poirots and Wallanders, even if they are known suspects. We’re also confident that this person works mostly alone, so double-acts of the Dalziel and Pascoe, Dempsey and Makepeace, Scott and Bailey, Rosemary and Thyme or Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) variety are not to be included in the search. Nor are criminal profilers, otherwise we’d obviously...

Why complicate matters? “The Swarm” – which premiered its first three episodes at the Berlinale Series – is one of those expensive pan-global coproductions necessitating copious logistics, not least a carefully observed quota of performers from each territory pumping money into the production pot. Its opener generates a not inconsiderable carbon footprint, whisking us from Peru to Canada and thence the Scottish Highlands.
The series title, meanwhile, invites confusion with not just 1978’s infamous Michael Caine venture – a disaster movie in all senses – but Donald Glover and Janine Nabers’ Prime Video-bound “Swarm,” itself launching next month.
In and of itself, however, this eight-parter proves reassuringly straightforward and familiar. Its briny pulp – dredged from Frank Schätzing’s 2004 novel, a Central European bestseller originally earmarked for big-screen adaptation by the late Dino De Laurentiis – preys heavily on viewer fears of ecological collapse, and what might be lurking for us all beneath the planet’s watery depths.

Last year PBS gave audiences the charming Victorian-era mystery series “Miss Scarlet and the Duke.” Though akin to other PBS and BBC shows like “Ripper Street,” creator Rachael New’s mystery series feels so charming “because Being Feminist (capitalization intended) isn’t what it sets its focus on.” Season 1 concluded with Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips) and William “the Duke” Wellington (Stuart Martin) possibly embarking on a romance — which, for a television show, can be a blessing or a curse.
The two certainly had a flirtatious bond, but a relationship could affect Eliza’s desire for a career, given William’s disdain for Eliza’s work. And in the second season premiere, which aired Sunday on PBS, it seemed like the pair were together. Then abruptly, William and Eliza realize a relationship isn’t in the cards for them and break up.

Why did the Doctor travel half the universe to, as she told Yaz, “see a man about a dog”? Firstly, because the Doctor is more evasive than a mid-scandal cabinet member at a press briefing and refuses to confide in the people who regularly risk their lives by her side, and secondly, because the Doctor enjoys making dog-related jokes at the expense of new alien Karvanista. ITV acquired the new seasons, with BritBox Original in the UK joining the series as a co-producer.
The new seasons will be developed by writer Justin Young, who will take on the role of lead writer and executive producer alongside Andrew Davies.

It’s wild when a fan movement works, isn’t it?
On Thursday, Masterpiece on PBS announced that it had renewed “Sanditon,” the ITV series based on Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel, for not one — but two — seasons.
The news comes after an extensive fan driven online campaign for the show, starring Rose Williams as the heroine Charlotte Heywood, to be continued. It just goes to prove that greenlighting a show for a single season and ending with a bodice-ripping cliffhanger (“What do you Mean she just rides off in the carriage after he came after her?!?”) can sometimes be a smart business decision.
Theo James, however, will not be returning to show in the role of Sydney Parker. In a statement provided to IndieWire, James said: “Although I relished playing Sidney, for me, I’ve always maintained that his journey concluded as I wanted it to. The broken...

Warning: contains mild plot details for A Discovery of Witches Season 2 Episodes 2 & 3
Alongside the sulky real-life Elizabethan playwrights and gruff spymasters of A Discovery of Witches’ second season shines one leading light: Mary Sidney. Styled the Countess of Pembroke following her 1577 marriage to Henry Herbert, Mary Sidney was a celebrated figure in Tudor society with several published works to her name, and close connections to the royal court of Queen Elizabeth I.
Played in the series by Amanda Hale, Mary Sidney becomes Diana’s ally during her and Matthew’s Elizabethan time-walk. Netflix and BBC’s serial killer series “The Serpent” is one of the international shows whose filming was impacted by the pandemic, and required shifting production from Asia to Europe.
The drama, which stars Tahar Rahim (“A Prophet”) as the French conman and mass murderer Charles Sobhraj, was on its last stretch of shooting on location in Thailand in late March when the country went into lockdown. After a near five-month pause, the series had to relocate filming to the U.K. where production decamped in Hertfordshire, just north of London, on Aug. 17. The lensing, which took place for 10 days and will conclude Friday, consisted of remaining scenes that were initially scheduled to be shot in Thailand in March.
“It’s a testament to the hard work and sheer inventiveness of ‘The Serpent”s creative team, cast and crew that we’ve been able to safely wrap the series here in the U.

I love a solid gangster drama and The Shadow of Violence looks to be just that.
Written by Joe Murtagh who saw great success a few years ago with American Animals, The Shadow of Violence marks the feature film debut of Nick Rowland who has a few shorts under his belt and most recently has been behind the camera for a number of television series, including episodes of "Ripper Street" and "Hard Sun."
Cosmo Jarvis (brilliant in Lady Macbeth) stars as Douglas "Arm" Armstrong, a former boxer who has found a second career as an enforcer for a drug-dealing family. At first, his former career is enough of a deterrent for would-be trouble-makers but as he becomes more entrenched in the thug life, Arm's duties become ever more violent and when he's tasked to com...

Fresh from season 2 of HBO’s “Succession” in which he plays the hapless Tom, Matthew Macfadyen portrays Major Charles Ingram, the “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” contestant accused of cheating, in the new AMC limited series “Quiz.” The BAFTA-winning actor (“Criminal Justice”) speaks about these two very different roles in our exclusive video interview (watch above).
Macfadyen readily admits that he remains on the fence as to whether Ingram and his wife Diana (Sian Clifford) conspired to defraud the show by having a fellow contestant cough at key points in the major’s deliberations over the questions. “The truth is we don’t know. Sian and I would come in every day and say, ‘Do you think they did or not?’ In the end we stopped minding. The interesting thing was their relationship.”

Saban Films has acquired North American rights to Calm With Horses, the Irish crime drama from Nick Rowland in his feature film directing debut. The pic, which bowed at the Toronto Film Festival and is executive produced by Michael Fassbender and Conor McCaughan, stars Peaky Blinders alum Cosmo Jarvis, Barry Keoghan, Niamh Algar and Ned Dennehy.
The Joe Murtagh-penned script is set in darkest rural Ireland, where ex-boxer Douglas “Arm” Armstrong (Jarvis) has become the feared enforcer for the drug-dealing Devers family, while also trying to be a good father to his autistic 5-year-old son. Torn between these two families, Arm’s loyalties are tested when he is asked to kill for the first time.
