Stuck on the cusp of 30

Ten years after a high school tragedy, Sean can't move on. Partially because he's so blinded by his grief that he can't see what's obvious to all his friends; and partially because, as he admits during one pivotal moment, he's selfish.

Trevor Morgan is extraordinary. Even at moments when I didn't totally believe the movie, I totally believed him.

Also wonderful to see Billy Zane in what is basically the Robert Forster role. He elevates every scene he's in.

I wish some of the story's relationships felt more convincing. The ending seems awfully pat. But despite some quibbles, there's some real powerful stuff here.

Think "The Spectacular Now" but at 30

There's a realness and rawness that courses through this film. Performances are authentic and the director allows space for the madness of being lost. Instead of trying to overwork it or milk it, the breathing room.

It takes balls to not put a car crash in the movie, but instead use the aftermath as the source of trauma. The story is in the after. Shortcuts weren't taken here and there are some real semi-off color jokes that bring a levity and specific point of view to this group of friends.

Billy Zane is a surprise. Trevor Morgan is outstanding. The awkwardness and intensity of Sean's relationships add such a texture.

This is an indie with all the notes you want. Grab a cup of tea on a stormy afternoon to sit in your feelings. It's a ride.

Cathartic, Feel-good film

A heartfelt story about a small-town man struggling to move forward in life after a tragic loss. Rippled with guilt and shame, he engages in self sabotage instead of showing up for his loved ones until he is finally forced to confront his past and "grow up". Yet this film is not at all a downer, in fact, it is the opposite. It's an uplifting and funny film that has you rooting for the flawed lead, thanks to Trevor Morgan's nuanced performance and Brittani Ward's balance of poignancy and levity in her writing. The film also features strong performances from the supporting cast, spotlighting local Chicago talent. Overall, Single Car Crashes is an impactful debut film from a promising director!

Loved this film!

If you want to see beautifully written, directed and acted film then see "Single Car Crashes". Brittani Ward's extraordinary debut is worth the watch.

It's a beautiful testament to how our relationships shape who we are and who we choose to become. Trevor Morgan is a delight as the aimless alcoholic who struggles with a car crash that shaped his life for the previous ten years - who punishes himself for what could have been. He thinks the answer is in his past until he nearly ruins his life and the people closest to him.

It's a feel good movie with authentic characters entrenched in a small Illinois town. A must see!
