Frank and Sadie's quiet night in is interrupted by Carter Caldwell, a fellow fixture of the society pages and a "confirmed bachelor." Carter had previously tried to call the Doyles, only to find that they had left their phone off the hook. At first the Doyles think it's Carter himself who needs their help, but he explains that he wants them to perform an exorcism on his "most stalwart acquaintance," Delancé, who is possessed by a demon.

Frank wakes from a nightmare about a childhood experience that he has never shared with Sadie. Sadie suggests putting together a puzzle to take his mind off things, but the picture of the puzzle transforms into a a scene of Frank's childhood nightmare: a wishing well.

After fixing drinks, Frank and Sadie notice that one of their windows is open. Jason, an incubus, admits to opening the window to let himself in. Frank and Sadie both admit to liking the intruder beyond the fact that he's getting them drinks, which shocks them both.

Frank and Sadie are returning from a party in the middle of nowhere, and begin sobering up when their car, a 1958 Plymouth Fury, breaks down. A tow truck drives by and the driver, Herbert, offers to tow them. Frank and Sadie ride with Herbert back to the garage, and learn the place they are in is called Knollware.
