This film was partly funded by the Luxembourg Film Fund. The father of actress Vicky Krieps, Bob Krieps, was the president of the Luxembourg Film Fund and worked for the country's Ministry of Culture [when this film was being produced], which supervises the Luxembourg Film Fund and decides which films will be funded with taxpayer's money. Several of Krieps' films were funded by the Luxembourg Film Fund, even when they weren't filmed in the country.

In an interview with Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant in 2013, director Philippe Claudel revealed that, after I've Loved You So Long (2008) and his then latest Avant l'hiver (2013), he never wanted to work with leading lady Kristin Scott Thomas again. He said that her behavior was difficult on the set, with frequent misunderstandings and a battle of egos. According to him, "she thinks she understands the scenario and the characters' intentions, but she doesn't". He qualified his criticism by saying that she is a great actress with a beautiful face, that he enjoyed capturing her on film, and that she gave perfect performances in the end, but the process was "too exhausting" to him.
