Dev Patel refused to let the slew of injuries he suffered while filming his elaborate fight scenes in “Monkey Man” get in the way of him completing the movie.
Patel not only directed and co-wrote the action movie, but he also stars as Kid, a young man who seeks to avenge his mother’s death at the hands of India’s corrupt law enforcement officials, political figures and spiritual leaders. He earns money by competing in a brutally violent underground fight club.
While Patel recently outlined the many production hurdles he had to overcome to make the film in a Reddit Ama, Variety caught up with him at the “Monkey Man” premiere in Los Angeles on Wednesday to talk about the film’s impact on his body during the four-month shoot in Indonesia. “I broke my hand in the first big action scene, broke some toes, tore a shoulder, eye infections,...

While it's up for 6 Oscars at the 95th Academy awards, Todd Field's award-storming 2022 movie provides such an in-depth look at its title character that it's not always clear whether Tár is based on a true story. Cate Blanchett's portrayal of the conductor Lydia Tár certainly helps to lend an air of verisimilitude to the sometimes shocking tale. As Tár interrogates many cultural questions surrounding sexual politics and the misuse of power, such relevant topics of today, it's easy to assume that Tár is a true story.
Tár's opening scene, in which a real New Yorker journalist recites Lydia's long list of musical achievements, immerses a viewer into the main character's world by highlighting how she is at the pinnacle of her career. With what follows, Cate Blanchett gradually turns Lydia Tár into a three-dimensional character by adding many complex layers of contradiction and corruption to her narrative. With...

Nia Long has enjoyed a long and successful career, including a recent run of popular titles, but she still has questions about parts for which she wasn’t considered in the past.
During an interview with The Cut that published Friday, Long was asked whether she feels that she gets overlooked for roles. Known for appearing in such sequel-spawning films as The Best Man, Big Momma’s House and Are We There Yet?, the actress’ latest credits include Missing, You People and The Best Man: The Final Chapters.
“I’ve felt passed over on things, for sure,” Long said. “There have definitely been moments like, ‘Why wasn’t I considered for that?’ Like, why wasn’t I considered for Avatar?”
Long clarified that she thinks Zoe Saldaña is “amazing” as Neytiri in James Cameron’s wildly successful film franchise. She added, “But I wasn’t even a topic of discussion, you know?...

Nia Long is calling out Hollywood for leaving her out of casting conversations. In a new interview with The Cut (via IndieWire), the “You People” actor questioned why she was never in the conversation to star as Neytiri in James Cameron’s “Avatar.”
“I’ve felt passed over on things, for sure,” Long said. “There have definitely been moments like, ‘Why wasn’t I considered for that?’ Like, why wasn’t I considered for ‘Avatar’? I think Zoe’s amazing. But I wasn’t even a topic of discussion, you know?”
Although Long admitted that “a lot of times, to be fair, directors know in their minds who they want,” she still finds herself feeling passed over for big Hollywood roles.
“I would love to do a film like ‘Avatar’ because I’m really a fan and obsessed,” Long said. “I would even do a supporting role in a film...

Content warning: This post contains mentions of emotional and psychological abuse.
"Stolen Youth," Hulu's new docuseries that explores Larry Ray's reign of psychological terror over a group of Sarah Lawrence college students, is extremely difficult to watch. The three-part series, released on Feb. 8, contains many real videos taken during the students' time living with Ray, and many feature verbal and physical abuse.
The story of what would become known as the "cult at Sarah Lawrence" first broke when The Cut published an exposé in 2019. It detailed how Ray had moved into his daughter Talia's dorm at Sarah Lawrence, quickly developing a hold over her roommates by regaling them with self-improvement advice. He claimed his knowledge was drawn from his years in the Marines, but Ray had lied about that - along with many other aspects of his life.
Anyone who followed the story in 2019 knows what happened next.

This article contains spoilers for Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence.
When news first broke in 2020 that a man named Larry Ray had been arrested for operating a sex cult at Sarah Lawrence College, the casual news observer could be forgiven for finding the ensuing headlines slightly humorous at first.
The existence of a hippie sex cult would be in keeping with some prevailing stereotypes attached to the prestigious college in Yonkers, New York. Originally a women’s institution of higher learning, Sarah Lawrence became coeducational in 1968 and has since developed a reputation for its wealthy, creative, socially liberal, and generally “out there” student body.
Of all the colleges in the United States, of course the libertines at Sarah Lawrence would be the ones to “yes and” themselves into a sex cult. But as more bits of information began to trickle out it began to become clear that...

John B and Sarah will still be very much in love in "Outer Banks" season three, but for stars Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline, filming the hit Netflix show's third season marked their first time working together post-breakup. The young couple called it quits in November 2021, not long after they celebrated their one-year anniversary. But while it would have been understandable if things were weird on set between the actors, Stokes and Cline revealed to Entertainment Weekly that their professional relationship is still going strong.
"Mads and I have been working together now for 30 episodes, and we made a promise to each other before we even started dating that the work was always going to come first," Stokes explained. "And that no matter what happens in our personal lives, and the ways that life sometimes takes you in different directions, that we're always going to honor the work. That stayed 100 percent truthful this season.

The Last of Us star Nico Parker has weighed in on the “nepo baby” discourse.

Now, in a new interview with The Cut, Parker, the daughter of actor Thandie Newton and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again director Ol Parker is the latest to join the conversation.
While the 18-year-old British actor said she sympathises with those who feel the argument “minimises” their achievements, she added: “But I think it’s incredibly important to recognise that with your parents being prevalent in the industry, it’s way easier to get in the room.
“It’s so important to know how many people would dream of being in that room, and how lucky you are to be there,” she acknowledged.

Episode five, “Festival Wear,” was a bloodbath on “Making the Cut,” with outrage from judge Jeremy Scott and the eliminations of both Curtis Cassell and Sienna Li. That left five designers going into episode six, “Social Media Content”: Rafael Chaouiche, Georgia Hardinge, Jeanette Limas, Markantoine Lynch-Boisvert, and Yannik Zamboni. After all that vitriol, it was nice to get back to a kinder, gentler “Making the Cut.” And spoiler alert: no notebooks were harmed in the filming of this episode.

Much to the surprise and delight of all the designers on “Making the Cut,” no one was eliminated in season three, episode four, “One Day, One Team.” So all seven contestants returned to design again in episode five, “Festival Wear”: Curtis Cassell, Rafael Chaouiche, Georgia Hardinge, Sienna Li, Jeanette Limas, Markantoine Lynch-Boisvert, and Yannik Zamboni. The sky is kind of the limit with this one.

Meghan Markle is having a busy couple of weeks and they are dramatic ones at that. While you could say that about every week since she met Prince Harry and the pair hightailed it for Montecito, California, this one has been particularly juicy.
First, Meghan released the first few episodes of her podcast, Archetypes, one of which featured an interview with professional tennis player Serena Williams. However, Meghan, or the Duchess of Sussex, spoke for the first 11 minutes and according to critics spoke mostly about herself.
Of all the questions she could have asked someone who has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles throughout her illustrious career, they came few and far between.
And, let’s not forget that bizarre or upsetting story, however you want to look at it, in which Meghan spoke about a fire that broke out in...

They are distressed that after stepping back from the royal family — claiming a need for privacy — she continues to publicize family matters in public,” the source says.
The source added that there is a “loss of trust” with Meghan.
During her interview with The Cut, the 41-year-old detailed her life in Montecito, California, and addressed the “bittersweet” transition that she and Prince Harry made after stepping away from royal life in 2020.

Australian morning show host Natalie Barr called Meghan Markle a “tosser” live on air following the duchesses’ recent tell-all interview.
“I couldn't even stomach getting through the whole article,” Barr, who is reportedly known for her candour, told her cohost David Koch.
“I think in Australia we’d say she’s just full of it. She’s a tosser. She’s a total tosser,” she continued.
“That’s how we would describe her. I just can’t… the way she speaks.”
Another host on the show, Edwina Bartholomew, suggested more sympathetically: “I think she has a very different narrative, perhaps, in the US to what is being accepted in the UK.”
Barr responded: “Or just everywhere in the world!” as Koch interjected: “That’s Eddie’s code for tosser!”

There have been a lot of changes in Meghan Markle’s life.
In the new cover story for The Cut, the Duchess of Sussex opens up about her and Prince Harry’s move to Montecito, her rocky relationship with the Royal Family, and a lot more.
“It was a big adjustment — a huge adjustment to go from that kind of autonomy to a different life,” she says of relinquishing control of her public image when she got together with Harry.
“There’s literally a structure by which if you want to release photos of your child, as a member of the family, you first have to give them to the Royal Rota,” Markle adds, referring to the U.K. media pool, which includes many tabloids.
“Why would I give the very people that are calling my children the N-word a photo of my child before I can share it with...

Meghan Markle is clearing the air. The Duchess of Sussex is clarifying a comment that she made in her recent interview with The Cut, in which she appeared to be referring to her husband Prince Harry's strained relationship with his father, Prince Charles. In the interview, Meghan says, "Harry said to me, 'I lost my dad in this process.' It doesn't have to be the same for them as it was for me, but that's his decision." While many readers thought she was saying that Harry had lost his relationship with his father, a spokeswoman for Meghan told E! News that she was referring to her rapport with her own estranged father, Thomas Markle, and was saying...

Nelson Mandela’s grandson Zwelivelile “Mandla” Mandela has responded to Meghan Markle’s recent comments to The Cut.
Meghan said in the piece, that was titled “Meghan of Montecito”, that an actor from South Africa pulled her aside at the 2019 “Lion King” premiere to say: “I just need you to know: When you married into this family, we rejoiced in the streets the same we did when Mandela was freed from prison.”
The Cut article added, “Of course, she knows she’s no Mandela, but perhaps even telling me this story is a mode of defence, because if you are a symbol for all that is good and charitable, how can anybody find you objectionable, how can anybody hate you?”
Mandla said of his grandfather being released after serving 27 years in prison, “Madiba’s celebration was based on overcoming 350 years of colonialism with 60 years of a brutal apartheid regime in South Africa.

Inventing Anna became an instant hit when it was released earlier this year. The series gave us plenty of true crime material to pour over – but where exactly does fact stop and fiction start?
The Netflix series – which stars Ozark actor Julia Garner as scammer Anna Delvey (real name Anna Sorokin) – was one of the streamer’s most anticipated releases to date, and captivated audiences when it finally arrived in February.
The show, however, also caused a major stir. Netflix has since been sued by Rachel DeLoache Williams, former Vanity Fair staffer and real-life former friend of Delvey’s who is portrayed in the series by actor Katie Lowes.
Williams filed a lawsuit on Monday (29 August) claiming that she was falsely depicted in the drama as “unethical,” “greedy,” “snobbish” and “disloyal”.

Meghan Markle’s Archetypes podcast was number one on Spotify in its first 24 hours last week, overtaking usual U.S. frontrunner The Joe Rogan Experience.
The premiere episode featured Serena Williams, and it was announced that Markle will be joined on tomorrow’s show by Mariah Carey.
That’s a powerhouse guest list for a launch, and a cover story for The Cut today revealed more star power to come. Constance Wu, Issa Rae, Lisa Ling, Margaret Cho and Ziwe are among the upcoming guests the outlet lists. The piece also reveals more about the concept behind the show’s name and how it relates to many standard characterizations of women.
Per the Cut:
The rest of the episodes, she’ll dig into labels like Old Maid, Dragon Lady, Bimbo, Crazy, Angry Black Woman, Bitch, and Slut (Will Meghan say slut? “Oh my gosh. That makes me so uncomfortable.”)
The title of the Williams episode was “The Misconceptions of Ambition.”
Deadline reached out to Spotify and will add any comment received.
Produced by Archewell Audio in partnership with Spotify’s Gimlet Media, Archetypes arrived nearly two years after Markle and husband Prince Harry, under their Archewell Audio banner, signed an exclusive multiyear deal with Spotify.
Another arm of Markle’s mutimedia enterprise with her husband is Archwell Productions, which has a deal with Netflix.
As Deadline reported exclusively in May, her animated series Pearl was quietly dropped by Netflix as part of the wave of cutbacks going on at the streamer.
“There’s not much you can do when a company and a division changes their slate,” Markle said about the cancelation. “And there’s also not much you can do when, even if they think the project is great, the media will report it as though it was only my project.”...

Megan Thee Stallion has been navigating fame on her own ever since the deaths of her mother and grandmother back-to-back in 2019. Though the "Traumazine" rapper has previously opened up about losing her family - including her father who died when she was 15 years old - she got candid about her fondest memories with her late parents in a new interview with The Cut, published on Aug. 29.
"I had the coolest parents in the world and I just wanted to be a good mix of both of them, and I feel like I am."
In her profile story, Megan talked about juggling success while parenting herself and recalled the days when her mom, Holly "Holly-Wood" Thomas - who was also a rapper - helped manage her career. The Duchess of Sussex has recalled being “scared to go out” during the 2019 London premiere of The Lion King.
Meghan has spoken before about the alleged racism she experienced while pregnant with her and the Duke of Sussex’s son, Archie.

Now, in a new interview with The Cut, Meghan described the period of time just after giving birth.

Gabriella Meyer was sent home for her underwhelming “Winter Wear” in episode three of “Making the Cut,” leaving seven designers fighting to be the next great global brand: Curtis Cassell, Rafael Chaouiche, Georgia Hardinge, Sienna Li, Jeanette Limas, Markantoine Lynch-Boisvert, and Yannik Zamboni. But how well could they work together? We found out — for better and worse — in “One Day, One Team.”
Assignment
For the first time on “Making the Cut” the designers had to display teamwork by all working on one team. Together they would create an accessible, cohesive collection where every designer was responsible for one look. Oh, and the timeline for finishing their assignments was shorter than ever. Instead of two weeks, or two days, or one day, they would have a mere seven hours and no help from seamstresses. What could possibly go wrong?

It has as since inspired hundreds of comments about everything from homophobia to how critics write about actresses and their bodies, particularly Black women.
“Ur review was great, maybe if you had gotten your eyes off my tits you could’ve watched the movie,” Stenberg wrote to Wilson on Aug. 8. The Dm was in direct...

Amandla Stenberg is reflecting on her experiences with “cancel culture” after being canceled “so many times” by people across the political spectrum.
The Bodies Bodies Bodies star spoke with Euphoria actress and friend Hunter Schafer for The Cut’s August cover story and got frank about how she’s navigated people’s criticisms of her career choices.
“Do I care that I have been canceled?” Stenberg asks after Schafer draws a connection between supposed cancel culture and the tone of the new A24 film. (Euphoria‘s Schafer notes at one point in the chat that Bodies Bodies Bodies features characters “just trying to cancel each other in the same space.”)
“I consider myself one of the lucky ones because now I don’t have to live with some perverse, distorted Catholic guilt,” Stenberg responds. She later adds, “This guilt that seems to derive...

"Not Okay," the new film by writer/director Quinn Shephard starring Zoey Deutch, is a satire of influencers and the terminally online. So it makes sense that they got one of the internet's most controversial influencers to make a cameo in the movie: Caroline Calloway. How did the duo make the shocking appearance happen?
"I think I DMed her and asked her," Shephard tells Popsugar. "I think we also sent a script through her agent, and then we drank a lot of rosé together. I found out that she was down to do it through an Instagram story that she posted."
"Zoey and I were going through a number of attempted recruitments of different cameos for that scene," she explains, but Calloway was "down to make fun of herself." "It was a challenge to find people, [who] not only were down to make fun of themselves, but also their entire team...

The Gotham Film & Media Institute on Monday has selected the films and series for its Project Market, a slate which IndieWire can exclusively reveal. Taking place during September’s Gotham Week at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the annual sales and development forum connects creators to distributors, financiers, and other industry decision-makers. It offers a look ahead at what could become the next buzzy films; “Moonlight” and “American Factory” are recent Oscar winners that were launched at past Project Market events.
This year’s lineup includes 65 fiction features and series, 60 nonfiction features and series, and 17 audio projects in various stages of development or production, including new projects from the producers of “Dopesick,” “Pose,” and “Sorry to Bother You.” For the first time since the pandemic, the annual event will include both in-person and virtual participation. In-person meetings run September 17-23, while virtual meetings will be held September 22-23.

Teen Wolf alum Arden Cho has confirmed that she passed on joining Paramount+’s revival movie after learning that she was offered far less money than her white and/or male co-stars.
In a recent interview with The Cut, Cho, the only actress of color among the four female series regular cast members who played the group of teen friends at the center of the TV show, was asked about Deadline’s report that she was offered half the per-episode salary proposed to her three counterparts for Teen Wolf The Movie. Cho confirmed that was in fact the case, saying “I think I was actually offered even less.” She insisted that whoever leaked the story was not in her camp, but added, “I probably would’ve never shared it.”
Cho, who is Korean-American, acknowledged that being paid less than her white and/or male co-stars is not a situation that is unique to her.

In September, as news of an upcoming "Teen Wolf" movie broke, fans of the six-season MTV series were eager to find out which members of Beacon Hills' wolf pack would be headed to Paramount+ for a feature-length sequel. “Teen Wolf” actress Arden Cho has opened up about the Aapi pay disparity she experienced on the project.
Cho, who played supernatural teen Kira Yukimura in the original series, said she was offered far less than her counterparts’ salary to return for the upcoming Paramount+ revival film.
A new interview in The Cut brought up a Deadline report from February 2022 alleging that Cho turned down the film after being “offered half the per-episode salary proposed to her three counterparts.”
“I think I was actually offered even less,” Cho clarified of the staggering wage gap between co-stars that led her to turn down the film version of the MTV series. She added that whoever leaked the pay disparity wasn’t in her camp. “I probably would’ve never shared it,” she said.
“Sometimes you don’t have a choice to say ‘no.’ Sometimes you just need it. You’ve got bills to pay.
