The Justice League. The Teen Titans. Heck, even the Outsiders. Most comic readers know these superhero teams from DC Comics, and can probably name at least a few key members, if not favorite stories.
But for a while in the 1980s, one team topped them all, rivaling even Chris Claremont’s X-Men run for comic shop supremacy: Legion of Super-Heroes won over readers with its futuristic space opera and its cast of unique characters.
The basic premise of the Legion of Super-Heroes is simple. 1000 years in the future, a group of superpowered teens take inspiration from Superboy and become heroes, most using powers they gained from their native planets. Like the best Superman stories, Legion tales tend to be optimistic and hopeful, certain that humanity can overcome its problems and work toward a better tomorrow.
But actually reading the Legion can be a bit daunting. Because of the future setting,...

We all know who Superman is.
Superman, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster in 1938, wasn't the first superhero character in modern media, but he tends to be held up as one of the genre's central archetypes. His red wrestler's cape and red strong man's trunks, paired with his super strength and ability to defy gravity, have all become central symbols of what a superhero is, how a superhero should behave, and what a superhero looks like. Hundreds of thousands of superheroes have been invented since 1938, but many of those produced by mainstream comics outlets like Marvel or DC owe Superman a direct debt. In the same way that every on-screen Dracula is a riff on Bela Lugosi's performance in Tod Browning's 1931 movie, Superman is either being enhanced or subverted by every comic book superhero character. But he is the mainstay.

“My Adventures With Superman” is an animated series that reimagines the classic Superman story, focusing on a young Clark Kent as he starts his journey to becoming Superman. It also delves into the early stages of his relationship with Lois Lane and his friendship with Jimmy Olsen.
Developed by Jake Wyatt, produced by Warner Bros. Animation, and animated by Studio Mir in South Korea, the series has recently released its second season. Season 3 is already in production, with creators teasing exciting developments to come.
One of the standout features of the show is its innovative twists on iconic villains, and Season 3 is set to continue this trend.
In the first two episodes of Season 2 of “My Adventures With Superman,” viewers encountered fresh takes on Atomic Skull and Damage. Atomic Skull is a classic Superman villain, while Damage is typically portrayed as a hero in the comics. Both characters were skillfully...

The Winchesters and Zombies breakout star Meg Donnelly first played Supergirl in Legion of Super-Heroes and has since reprised the role for Warner Bros. Animation's Crisis on Infinite Earths trilogy.

Rumors first surfaced earlier this month that Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani would be portraying Booster Gold in the Dcu's upcoming DC Studios/Max Booster Gold series and a very telling sign that this rumor was indeed true was the fact that DC Studios co-chair James Gunn did not take to X/Twitter or Threads to debunk it.
Now, The Cosmic Circus is adding that they've spoken to Blue Beetle star Xolo Maridueña (who is one of the few actors making the jump from the Dceu to the Dcu), and he's confirmed that Kumail Nanjiani will indeed portray Booster Gold.

Have you ever caught a drape of talent so rich that it grasps your imagination and refuses to let go? Well, that’s precisely the spectacle put on by the ensemble cast in Ryan Condal & George R. R. Martin’s House of the Dragon, which has been nothing short of stellar.
This cast has been further brightened by Milly Alcock, who, after a mesmerizing portrayal of Rhaenyra Targaryen that bewitched viewers, is soaring high to take the mantle of Supergirl in James Gunn’s burgeoning Dcu. Embodying the fierce and young Princess Rhaenyra in the first season of HBO’s spellbinding spinoff, this Australian actress, 24, has elevated the bar for what we have come to expect from fantasy drama on TV.

DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn wasted no time casting the Dcu's Supergirl. While the character is expected to debut in next year's Superman, we won't have long to wait until she swoops into her own solo adventure with 2026's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock is set to play the Maiden of Might, but the casting hunt came down to her and The Winchesters star Meg Donnelly before the Australian actress won the coveted role.
Donnelly is no stranger to the hero after voicing her in Warner Bros. Animation's Legion of Super-Heroes and Crisis on Infinite Earths. So, when we caught up with Donnelly to discuss the final chapter of the latter trilogy this week, we asked about her Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow experience.

After Dean Winchester in Supernatural and Soldier Boy in The Boys, fans would love to see Jensen Ackles don the Batman role in James Gunn’s Dcu. Ackles has already given voice to the role in several direct-to-video DC animation projects, including Batman: The Long Halloween. However, one comment from his co-star in these films could be concerning for the actor’s Dcu debut.

The character of Batman is revered by fans of DC Comics. One of the rare heroes, who possesses no extraordinary ability or powers, but can still hold his own against the most dangerous villains, Batman brings the much-needed human touch to the world of superheroes. Over so many decades since the inception of this character, it has been adapted into live-action as well as animation multiple times, with actors who associated themselves with the character, gaining widespread fame.

Jensen Ackles is no stranger to the world of glitz and glamour and found fame with his role as Dean Winchester in The CW series, Supernatural. He became a fan-favorite actor, whose name was often mentioned in the same sentence as that of Batman. And fans’ wishes came true when Ackles was cast to voice Batman in the critically acclaimed animated movie, Batman: The Long Halloween.

The first full-length trailer for Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Three has just hit (via Toonado.com), and it teases what looks to be a high-stakes finale to this animated trilogy (and the Tomorrowverse as we know it).
With the Anti-Monitor on the loose, a whole host of heroes assemble to save the Multiverse, but it looks like that will be easier said than done when they also have Lex Luthor to contend with. Several other villains are also spotted, including The Joker, Scarecrow, and Two-Face.
In terms of cameos, the trailer ends with another Batman: The Animated Series tease. Batman Beyond also appears, but perhaps the biggest surprise comes when we return to the world of the Super Friends!
The Saturday morning cartoon aired between 1973 and 1985 on ABC and was produced by Hanna-Barbera. That classic animation style returns here and we're hoping the movie has even...

This X-Men ’97 article contains spoilers.
Back in the ’90s, the original X-Men: The Animated Series gained a following precisely because it could translate the tangled soap-opera storylines from the comic franchise into compelling, but easily digestible chunks. X-Men ’97 continues this tradition, but for a very different audience. Where only big nerds knew about Gambit or Deadpool in the ’90s, now they’re household names.
And yet, X-Men ’97 goes even deeper, filling the screen with deep-cut Marvel characters from both the world of mutants and the cosmos. If you want to put some names and backstories to some of these faces, here’s a guide to all the cameos and major character returns in the show’s sixth episode, “Lifedeath Part 2.”

Phenomena: Matilde’s Quest (Phenomena Book 2)
By Brian Michael Bendis and André Lima Araújo
Abrams ComicArts/156 pages/$24.99
It has to be said that writer Brian Michael Bendis rarely, if ever, repeats himself. His Ultimate Spider-Man is unlike his New Avengers, which is nothing like his Legion of Super-Heroes, his self-created Takio, or Murder Inc. He is incredibly prolific and highly original, with a gift for dialogue and character that always makes his stories engaging.
Here, he and André Lima Araújo have created a new science fiction world and populated it with all manner of organic and technological wonder. In 2022, we first met the trio of hotheaded Boldon, the outcast Matilde, and Spike and their exploits on a nearly unrecognizable Earth. An event dubbed the Phenomena, something shrouded in mystery, resulted in a towering wall separating two warring cultures.

When it came to casting the new Supergirl, DC Studios exec James Gunn went above and beyond before honing in on Milly Alcock to star in the upcoming film “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.”
Sources say Gunn and co-ceo Peter Safran flew multiple actors, including Meg Donnelly, to Atlanta for old-fashioned, onscreen auditions on the “Superman: Legacy” set. The actors also donned the Supergirl suit and boots, which is an atypical move in the superhero audition process (though Jamie Dornan once wore a makeshift Superman costume to his ill-fated audition for 2013’s “Man of Steel”).
Gunn first sparked to Alcock when he saw her playing Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s “House of the Dragon.” But Donnelly made it a close contest and had the advantage of having voiced the role of Kara Zor-El/Supergirl in several Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s animated films, including last year’s “Legion of Super-Heroes.”

House of the Dragon actress Milly Alcock has landed the coveted role of Supergirl in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe.
The Australia-born Alcock played the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the first season of HBO’s Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon.
She beat out Coda actress Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly, the latter who voiced Supergirl in such DC animated movies as Legion of Superheroes and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One.
Alcock is repped by CAA, Shanahan Management, Entertainment 360 and Curtis Brown.
There’s been buzz that the new Supergirl will appear in Gunn’s Superman Legacy, which is about to go before the cameras in Georgia, but that’s not 100%. What we know now is that she’ll appear in a DC-based project before starring in her solo feature, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. No director has been announced for Supergirl,...

Though they've made a fraction of the box office of even the worst DC live-action movie, creatively the crown jewel of DC Comics adaptations lies in their animated movies. It's through animation that the potential of comic book adaptations really shines. Ever since "Superman: Doomsday" was released in 2007, we've had movies that faithfully adapt popular comics storylines (rather than just borrow the name for brand recognition and throw the rest away), original films with wild concepts, and even movies that build on continuity like the biggest cinematic universes.
This is one of the most interesting aspects of the DC animated movies, because there are two proper continuities, each building up characters and storylines and exploring giant crossovers in a way DC has not come even close to figuring out in live-action.
Given how little resources Warner Bros. have used to properly market this universe or make sure audiences are aware of its continuity,...

According to Deadline, DC Studios are preparing to begin the testing process for the role of Supergirl in the DC Universe. In the mix are Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon), Emilia Jones (Locke & Key), and Meg Donnelly (The Winchesters).
Deadline’s report states that the Supergirl testing will take place sometime in the next month, with James Gunn definitely playing a part in the process. The character is set to take the lead of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but there’s the chance she could make an appearance in another DC project, which is why the studio wants to sign an actress sooner rather than later. We all know how this process goes, so take this all with a grain of salt; while these actresses could wind up testing for the role, it could easily land in someone else’s lap.

Exclusive: We are hearing that DC Studios is planning to test actresses soon to star in Supergirl, and that Milly Alcock, Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly are in the mix.
There is a chance the studio could make a straight offer to a star, but all things are pointing toward screen tests for actresses, which will go down within the next month or so, we hear.
Deadline understands that natch, DC Studios co-boss James Gunn is definitely part of the process, as this is a character who likely will make its debut via a cameo in a DC project that isn’t Supergirl. The search is ongoing for a director.
Alcock is best known for her lead role on HBO’s Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon, playing Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. She is repped by CAA, Shanahan Management, Entertainment 360 and Curtis Brown.

This Blue Beetle article contains spoilers.
At the start of Blue Beetle’s second act, protagonist Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) asks an important question: “Who the hell was Blue Beetle?”
A lot of viewers wondered the same thing when the Warner Bros. movie came to theaters earlier this year and they’ll likely be asking it again now that the movie is streaming on Max. People don’t ask that same question of Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman, but not because Blue Beetle is at best a C-lister in the DC Comics bullpen. Rather it’s because the man behind the Blue Beetle mask has changed several times since Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski debuted the character in 1939.
The big-screen adaptation introduces Blue Beetle as Jaime Reyes, who is a recent college grad forced to the superhero identity after receiving an alien scarab from Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine), the daughter of inventor Ted Kord,...

Justice League is making waves once again. Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part 1 is setting new benchmarks in the animated DC movie world. Touted to run for an impressive 93 minutes, it becomes the longest film in the Tomorrowverse series. That means it’s offering fans 1 hour and 33 minutes of captivating content, a record for DC’s Tomorrowverse movies.
Starting with Superman: Man of Tomorrow in 2020, the Tomorrowverse has given us many memorable titles. Films like Green Lantern: Beware My Power, Legion of Super-Heroes, and Justice League: Warworld have entertained countless fans. But here’s a fun tidbit: information on this record-breaking length first surfaced from an Amazon France listing. This tidbit, spotted by eagle-eyed fans on the DCEULeaks subreddit, hints at the expansive scope of Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part 1.
And that’s not all. This film is just the beginning – the first part of a trilogy.

Last week sadly and rather suddenly we lost the great Keith Giffen. There will only ever be one Keith Giffen. He was a creator who as writer and artist has left behind a legacy of amazing comics. He had runs on comics, that are legendary. Runs that inspired the next generation. Runs that reinvented the wheel. Runs that defined characters and still define them today across all media. Runs that included the creation of some of comics greatest and most loved characters. So as Keith pulls his chair up to the great drawing board in the sky we look back on the man behind this outstanding career.
I have to confess I haven’t really read much of Giffen’s work. It is a shame that his passing sees me wanting to rectify the situation. However it does speak volumes about the legacy of work he leaves behind, that I...

Keith Giffen, known both as a comic book writer and artist whose characters have appeared in live-action franchises from Marvel and DC Comics, has died. He was 70 years old and had worked in comics since 1976.
Giffen was known for having a hand in the creation of characters including Lobo, Guardians of the Galaxy furry teammate Rocket Raccoon and the modern Jaime Reyes version of Blue Beetle. He also wrote acclaimed runs of “Justice League” and the “Legion of Super-Heroes,” as well as creating the cult fourth-wall-breaking character Ambush Bug (a decade earlier than Deadpool).
He died Sunday of a stroke, according to media reports (first reported by Bleeding Cool), but the news of his death wasn’t made public until Wednesday evening.

Keith Giffen, the veteran comics author and artist who co-created characters such as DC’s Lobo and the Jamie Reyes version of the Blue Beetle as well as Marvel’s Rocket Raccoon, has died. He was 70.
Giffen’s family announced his death on Facebook Wednesday via a sardonic post pre-written by the comic book writer-artist: “I told them I was sick…Anything not to go to New York Comic Con, Thankx,’ adding “Bwah ha ha ha ha.”
His death was affirmed by longtime collaborator Paul Levitz. “The sad news is now official: Keith Giffen has gone off to create new worlds that are beyond our living reach,” Levitz wrote on Facebook. “Keith was probably the most fertile creative mind of our generation in comics. He had an infinite number of ideas, pouring constantly out.”

DC delivered a lot of live-action and animated content in the last few years. Although the studio has been struggling with the live-action content amid the imminent end of DC Extended Universe, DC never fails to deliver us some animation every year. Apart from the animated movies such as ‘Legion of Super-Heroes,’ ‘Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham,’ and ‘Justice League: Warworld,’ we also watched the ‘Harley Quinn,’ series, which spawned the ‘Valentine’s Day Special’ and its fourth season this year.
Harley Quinn animated series premiered in November 2019 on the former DC Universe streaming service, followed by the second season only two months after the first one ended. After the DC Universe was shut down as a streaming service, the series was moved to HBOMax, which was rebranded to simply Max in May this year. Wait a minute, you might be asking, isn’t HBO Max supposed to be “Max” now? How then, am I seeing a list of HBO Max new releases for May 2023? Well spotted, dear reader. Warner Bros. Discovery did indeed recently reveal that it would be rebranding its combined HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming service as just Max. As the company notes in its press release for May though, that change doesn’t take effect until May 23. What follows is a list of everything coming to HBO Max through May 22.
The biggest releases this month are two TV series that arrive at the beginning of May. White House Plumbers is a comedic take on the infamous Watergate scandal starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux. That will be followed by season 3 of The Other Two, which I personally consider the funniest show on television. Catch up now before it’s too late!

Long live the Legion!
Since early in their existence, I have been a diehard fan of the Legion of Super-Heroes, so I am immediately drawn to anything featuring them. The current Warner Animation release, Legion of Super-Heroes, certainly makes me smile—that is, when I’m not grimacing.
The film picks up on the current animated continuity so we have a Supergirl (Meg Donnelly), relatively new to Earth. She’s a headstrong teen still coming into her powers, and for some reason, Superman (Darren Criss), who already had the benefit of Pa Kent’s tutelage, can’t manage her. When Batman (Jansen Ackles) points out she’s a threat in her current condition, the Man of Steel decides she needs more help than he can give.
Using a time sphere, he brings her to the 31st Century, where she is immediately accepted into the Legion Academy. Then, in both time periods,...

Studios that utilized theaters to boost PVOD prospects saw their efforts pay off this week. The 19.99 “Plane” (Lionsgate) and “M3GAN” (Universal) lead the VOD charts, followed by Christmas titles “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” (Universal/24.99) and “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody” (Sony/19.99). With studios recouping 14 or more from each transaction, that’s a bonanza — especially with three of those films still in the box office top 10. Synergy at last!
“Plane” is #1 on iTunes and Vudu, #2 on Google Play, with the order reversed for “M3GAN.” “Puss” is #3 on Google Play, fourth on the others. “Whitney,” new this week, is #3 on Vudu and #7 on iTunes. It has yet to chart at Google Play (which often lags), but perhaps it isn’t helped by the site listing it as a “documentary.” “Triangle of Sadness” (Neon/6.99) took the #3 spot at iTunes.

Comic book artist Lee Moder, who co-created the Courtney Whitmore version of Stargirl with Geoff Johns in 1999, has passed away, according to ComicBook.com and statements from his peers. The web site cited a family friend, who indicated that Moder died quietly at home sometime on or before January 15th. No cause of his death was given. Moder was 53.
A TV series based on the Stargirl character ran for three seasons on the CW, ending last December. DC’s Stargirl followed Courtney and her stepfather Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson) as she leads an unlikely group of young heroes to take on the legacy of DC’s very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America. Johns served as showrunner, and executive produced the series with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter.
Moder worked in the comics industry for nearly three decades. In that time he drew titles like Legion of Super-Heroes and Wonder Woman at DC.

Kara, devastated by the loss of Krypton, struggles to adjust to her new life on Earth. Her cousin, Superman, mentors her and suggests she leave their space-time to attend the Legion Academy in the 31st century, where she makes new friends and a new enemy: Brainiac 5. Meanwhile, she must contend with a mysterious group called the Dark Circle as it searches for a powerful weapon held in the Academy’s vault.
There’s a certain charm to these DC Universe animated movies that’s unshakable. Despite the fact that the running time for nearly all of them is not even a full ninety minutes, and despite telling relatively simplistic superhero stories, they’re still highly enjoyable rides that I’m always pleased to go on, and Jeff...
