Alan Titchmarsh: Anybody who loved the British countryside in 1987 and who lived within that swathe that was literally taken out was heartbroken. The beauty of the English landscape had just been trashed overnight. It took a long time to get over that. It took a long time to clear it up. But we girded our loins, we replanted, and we did it. And now you wouldn't know. And it was a wonderful demonstration of the healing and recoverable effects of nature. And that I find incredibly reassuring.
