It’s busy and Twister-y at the box office this weekend, but a few indies are hoping to catch a breeze with very well-reviewed Oddity looking to expand the market for high-end horror and Widow Clicquot to attract fans of good period films and bubbly.
Oddity from IFC Films, is a supernatural home-invasion horror from writer-director Damian McCarthy (Caveat). It opens on 790 screens, the widest new indie release this week. Carolyn Bracken stars as Dani, who is restoring an old castle in rural Cork County, Ireland, with her husband Ted (Gwilym Lee), a doctor at a facility for the criminally insane. When Dani is brutally murdered, her blind occultist twin sister Darcy (also Bracken) goes after those responsible using inherited haunted items as her tools of revenge. Premiered in SXSW’s Midnighter section, taking the Audience Award. At 98% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

It’s 1977 and TV talk show host Jack Delroy’s (David Dastmalchian) career is on the skids. Once a titan of late-night TV, the tragic death of his wife has left him a shell of his former self, and his ratings are tanking. Desperate to remain relevant and snatch victory from the jaws of obscurity, Night Owls with Jack Delroy has planned a supernatural stunt to kickstart his comeback, but what Delroy hoped would be a harmless but entertaining spook show turns into something far more disturbing; and it all happens live and in lurid, living color. The directing duo of Colin and Cameron Cairnes present their newest feature, Late Night with the Devil, as a warts-and-all rebroadcast of that fateful...

Late Night With the Devil, the latest film from Cameron and Colin Cairnes, the team who made 100 Bloody Acres and Scare Campaign, opens with scenes of violence caught in the lens of the TV camera. As we watch, Michael Ironside tells us about America in the 1970s, and then segues into the career of radio man turned late night TV host Jack Delroy.
His show, the syndicated Night Owls, has run a close second to Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show, but never managed to catch up to it in the ratings wars. And since the death of Jack’s wife Madeline his life and his ratings, seem to be in free fall. With sweeps week kicking off on Halloween Eve and his career on the line,...

IFC Films and Shudder have snatched up rights to hot AFM horror title Late Night with the Devil, taking the film for North America, U.K. and Ireland in a deal with Cinetic Media.
IFC said it plans to release the film exclusively in theaters, with a later streaming window on Shudder.
Directed by Australian filmmaking brothers Cameron and Colin Cairnes (100 Bloody Acres, Scare Campaign), Late Night With the Devil evokes the spirit and style of 1970s horror classics like The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby. It tells the story of the charismatic but ratings-challenged late night talk show host Jack Delroy (Suicide Squad star David Dastmalchian), who stages a demon-evoking seance on live TV and unexpectedly unleashes evil into the nation’s living rooms.

Australian siblings and directing duo Colin and Cameron Cairnes have earned a following on the cult horror circuit with their first two features: the low-budget horror comedy 100 Bloody Acres (which won the Midnight X-treme award at the 2013 Sitges Film Festival) and 2016’s Scare Campaign, a gruesome twist on the slasher genre.
Their follow-up, Late Night With The Devil, is framed as a found-footage film about a 1977 live broadcast of a late-night talk show where the host — the Johnny Carson also-ran Jack Delroy (played by David Dastmalchian of Suicide Squad and Oppenheimer fame) — decides to go big for a Halloween night edition during sweeps week with a guest who claims to commune with the devil.
The Cairnes’ mash up themes of 1970s horror classics with the media satires of the era, such as Network and The King of Comedy, to create a thrill ride that won over Stephen King – “absolutely brilliant.

The narrative unfolds virtually in real time as the 1977 live broadcast of a late-night talk show unexpectedly turns from amusing to bizarre to deliciously sinister, unleashing evil into the nation’s living rooms. David Dastmalchian stars as the talk show host.

Up next from Australian writing-directing team Colin and Cameron Cairnes (100 Bloody Acres, Scare Campaign) is found footage horror Late Night With the Devil, with David Dastmalchian (Dune, The Suicide Squad) starring as the host of a late-night talk show that descends into a nightmare.

Bloody Disgusting spoke with the actor after the SXSW world premiere of Late Night with the Devil (our review). It turns out that producer Roy Lee thought so, too.

As someone who has been championing 100 Bloody Acres for over a decade now (it’s so great!), I was beyond thrilled to see that Australian filmmaking duo Cameron and Colin Cairnes would be celebrating the world premiere of their latest genre effort—Late Night with the Devil—at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. Late Night with the Devil stars David Dastmalchian as struggling talk show host Jack Delroy, who decides one fateful Halloween night to take his show in a new direction, resulting in a night filled with thrills and chills for viewers and participants alike.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Dastmalchian about his involvement with Late Night with the Devil, where he discussed everything from how he approached his character, how the project is a love letter for all his fellow monster kids out there, his experiences working alongside both Colin and Cameron on Late Night,...

It’s 1977 and TV talk show host Jack Delroy’s (David Dastmalchian) career is on the skids. Once a titan of late-night TV, the tragic death of his wife has left him a shell of his former self, and his ratings are tanking. Desperate to remain relevant and snatch victory from the jaws of obscurity, Night Owls with Jack Delroy has planned a supernatural stunt to kickstart his comeback, but it what Delroy had hoped would be a harmless but entertaining spook show turns into something far more disturbing; and it all happens live and in lurid, living color. The directing duo of Colin and Cameron Cairnes present their newest feature, Late Night with the Devil as a warts-and-all rebroadcast of...

As someone who has been a longtime apologist for Paul W.S. Anderson’s 1995 Mortal Kombat adaptation, I’ll be the first to admit that considering it has been nearly 26 years since that first film hit the big screen, we were definitely due for a new live-action take on the Mortal Kombat universe. And holy hell, does this new Mk deliver up a flawless victory—there’s more world-building in this new Mortal Kombat in the first five minutes than we get in the entirety of Mk (1995), and between the jaw-droppingly great action set pieces and a fantastic ensemble that does a brilliant job of bringing these iconic characters to life, I absolutely loved everything that director Simon McQuoid, as well as the film’s screenwriters Greg Russo and Dave Callaham, were able to bring to the table for Mortal Kombat (2021).
Simply put, this new Mortal Kombat kicks copious amounts of ass.

My regular readers may remember that I am psychologically predisposed towards liking any horror film that comes from Australia. I'm not sure why, exactly, but I think it's because their indie films often exhibit some true effort and novelty; because they're a cool and colorful people who don't take themselves too seriously; and because a lot of them really seem to love a good horror flick. The new Aussie import known as 100 Bloody Acres is most assuredly a comedy first and a horror film second, but kudos to the Colin and Cameron Cairnes for maintaining a strong balance of gross humor and shocking violence.
Our plot focuses on a pair of wildly disparate brothers (one's sort of twitchy; the other is a hulking brute) who run a very unique organic fertilizer business. The small, dopey brother (Damon Herriman) comes across a horrible car crash, and (like an idiot) decides to steal all of the corpses.

Their secret "recipe" for success (using dead car crash victims in their product) was a huge...

I'm loving this 100 Bloody Acres secondary marketing campaign. Directing brothers Colin and Cameron Cairnes have applied their considerable talents to putting together a series of fake ads that brilliantly parody the terrible Australian TV ads made by well-meaning but under financed amateurs. Some very real examples are the Souvlaki Hut Gorilla and Wombat Gully. The Cairnes brothers ads are for another sibling duo, Reg and Lindsay Morgan, of Morgan's Organic - the characters at the centre of their horror comedy 100 Bloody Acres. Check the latest ad out below....

The Australian horror comedy 100 Bloody Acres will launch on VOD and in limited release on June 28th. Until then, here’s a trailer and poster to get you acquainted with a film that could be one of the surprises of the summer. It looks like an Australian Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil, which sounds good to me.
The movie is directed by Colin and Cameron Cairnes, and stars Damon Herrriman (Justified), Agnus Sampson, Anna McGahan, Oliver Ackland, Jamie Kristian, and John Jarratt.
