The movie takes place in Fair Haven, New York. On the letter which Gemma received, it is clearly shown as her address. A similar letter was sent to Max by Marvin the lawyer, too. On both letters, it is shown that Marvin's law firm is based in New York City, and yet his office in the whole movie is in Fair Haven, the same town where Gemma lives and where Max lived before he went to college.
