    A Series of Unfortunate Events

...is not a good cliffhanger. When it comes to an episode that well might be the end of the story if not renewed for whatever reason you have some sort of expectations. Not all have to be matched and I'm sure in for a surprise, but this was: none at all. It's a shame to see the good build-up and the impressive acting of the main cast to go to waste as the story develops into just more hardships. Or better: stories, plural. With Spencer we at least know where it's going even tho it's hard to believe how many unfortunate events a single character can have. What an end would have been he setting foot on American soil. No, just more problems. And then there is this the C-Plot that goes absolutely nowhere and actually doesn't invite to come back for another season. Was it just a nod to the American Heritage Association? Will it eventually cross lines with the story?

So, all other episodes build up to something. This one: nothing. Let's see if viewer give the show another try next year. Wouldn't wonder if not.

    how many times

Have we seen people here saying, 'if i could've given this 0 stars, i would have'? Well...if i could have given this 12 stars i would have. Do NOT deprive yourself of this excellent series because of the know nothings who criticized it. They're, at most, kids. Or people who can't handle strong emotions or violence. This production offers the full spectrum of storytelling and was nothing less than superb in any of the hues that make up this spectrum. Acting, cinematography, costumes, pacing...and, most importantly, writing. If you don't believe this, read the other reviews that praise it. I can't wait for season 2.

I didn't even realize this was the season finale

Everyone lauds Taylor Sheridan for creating the Yellowstone Cowboy-verse but we forget the other creatives. If John Linson never made contact with Sheridan during 'Sons of Anarchy,' we would never had the glory of these shows.

In consideration of this episode, I would like to address the issues of misogyny and violence towards women. We are in a time where we can't defend any possibility of misogyny but I would like to point out, it is a depiction of a time past--with a modern lens. It adds depth, it's not like an early season of 'Game of Thrones,' where plot developed alongside sexual slavery.

I would compare it to the Rainwater scenes, Native people should take offense at similar depictions of violence and subjugation of power--despite being honest, brutal and accurate. It takes these highlights for an audience to look more carefully into, to take offense and make more to a past way of thinking is to not learn from history.

So...wait. Does this show finish when Spencer gets home? Even I am feeling the wait (weight).

    What a cliffhanger!

Taylor Sheridan works on a large canvas, with this finale of the first season of his epic "1923" building considerable tension as he creates intense drama in each of the disparate subplots of this "Yellowstone" prequel saga.

It reminded me of a Silent Era movie, especially D. W. Griffith's ambitious classic "Intolerance", which had a similar theme and structure, plus the now-antiquated setting up of Good versus Evil writ large. There's little nuance here as Sheridan piles on, with an emphasis of near-hopelessness, the tribulations of the good guys, all of whom have the odds stacked against them.

Of course, we know the Duttons and their vast ranch will survive, as this after all is a prequel, but what will happen to the other protagonists, especially the Native Americans, is left uncertain. In the capable cast, I was grateful for the participation of Bruce Davison, a terrific character actor whose work I have enjoyed ever since "Willard" and "Last Summer", cast here as an unsympathetic British royal.

    Too slow for a finale

Very lackluster for a season finale. Everything just sets up for the next season but this episode felt slow. A lot of cliff hangers and what will happen next. But throughout the episode it felt like a lot of unnecessary scenes. I would have expected Spencer to at least arrive to Yellowstone by the finale to set everything running for season 2. But somehow at the finale, he seems further away from the Yellowstone. Like how many obstacles does this character need to go through to get home. It feels like the process getting there is taking too long and my worry is that once he arrives. The writers will somehow rush through it.

    • Trivia
Miscegenation laws made interracial marriage illegal, most states had these laws, all states with these laws banned the marriage of white and blacks, some also banned the marriage of whites to Asians and Native Americans as well. Montana's miscegenation law was passed in 1909 and made marrying blacks and Asians illegal and it wasn't repealed until 1953.
    • Goofs
Spencer says "I could care less" when he is asked what weapon he wants for the duel. The correct expression is "I couldn't care less" and in 1923 it had not yet been corrupted to "could", the way some people say it now.
    • Quotes

      Jack Dutton: How you feeling?

      Elizabeth Strafford: Like a failure.

Jack Dutton: It's just nature looking out for you. Things weren't right and nature took care of it. It happens to horses. It happens to cattle.

Elizabeth Strafford: It happens to cattle. You sell them.

Jack Dutton: Well, you ain't gettin' sold if that's what you're worried about.

Elizabeth Strafford: It's my one purpose on this planet. If I can't do it, then what the hell am I here for?

Jack Dutton: Well, my aunt never had children. You saying she got no purpose? She raised me. Raised my father. Nursed my uncle back to life. You too. No telling how many lives she nursed away from death during the war. When I look at my aunt, all I see is purpose. Maybe that's your purpose too. Be a mother to those who ain't got one. A teacher to those who need lessons. We choose our purpose. The word you're looking for is destiny. And if you wanna give God a good laugh, you tell him what you think your destiny is."

Elizabeth Strafford: And if I can't ever have children?

Jack Dutton: Then you can't have children.

Elizabeth Strafford: Then you'll never be a father.

Jack Dutton: I guess it ain't my destiny. You're my destiny.

Elizabeth Strafford: You just said you can't choose destiny. You chose me.

Jack Dutton: One look at you and I had no choice at all. Destiny... And think of all the things God had to give to you to make you choose me. Like poor judgment, bad vision, terrible taste in men. We take what life gives us. It's all we can do.
