Saoirse Ronan in Brooklyn (2015)

FAQ

Brooklyn

FAQ

Brooklyn was a 2009 novel by Irish author Colm Tóibín. It won the 2009 Costa prize. The novel was adapted for the movie by English screenwriter Nick Hornby.

1951 and '52. Eilis and Tony watch Singin' in the Rain (1952), which went on general release in April 1952. The date of death on Rose's tombstone is July 1st, 1952, and Nancy's wedding is noted as August 27th, 1952. However, this is confused by early references to The Quiet Man (1952), which didn't come out until 21 August 1952.

"Brooklyn" follows Eilis as she eventually has to choose between two appealing young men who want to marry her and raise a family with her. Tony, an Italian-American in New York, represents her new world, while Jim, back in Ireland, represents home and the old world. Eilis' difficulty in choosing between the two shows her deep love both both places.

"Casadh an tSúgáin" (A Twist of the Rope), sung by sean-nós singer Iarla O'Lionaird. Lyrics here.
