Absolutely not. Even with sufficient handholds and Ethan's rock-climbing experience, there's absolutely no way he could hang on like that. A plane that big has to be traveling at least 180 mph to take off and with the rush of air, Ethan could never have hung on without some sort of harness. Plus, he wouldn't have been able to communicate with Benji or anyone else, even if he had a functioning earpiece. This being a Mission:Impossible movie, we're supposed to just go along for the ride.
What's fascinating is that Cruise himself actually DID perform the stunt: he was harnessed to the plane and even given special contact lenses to protect his eyes from debris while the plane made a few takeoffs to get the film footage. However, it was done with some intense planning and as many safety measures put into place as they could to insure that Cruise wouldn't be killed.
