YOUR RATING
Mandje (2023)
Influenced by films such as "The Lighthouse" and "Psycho", Michael Oilar and Clarice Lafayette star in this stylized retelling of an age old German folk tale, "The Fisherman and his Wife". Our film explores the line between greed, love and pride... When a humble fisherman catches a magical fish that can grant any request.

Director: Cameron Currin and Cody Kristapovich

an old fairy tale in fair terms adapted

The fisherman and his wife was one of fairy tales most seductive in my childhood years. In some measure, one of the most influent. For its simplicity, clear moral message and clash between the modesty of humble fisherman and the desires of his ambitious, greedy wife.

And , sure, the fascinating fish and its gifts as answers to demands.

A beautiful crafted Gothic atmosphere and precious acting.

The feeling to see pencil drawings animation or old pages from a fairy tale book.

All is familiar and the main virtue is the sound and the flavors and the shadow of gestures and words of characters.

    In short, fascinating work.

    • Trivia
"Mandje" was chose as the film title because it is a word used in the fairy tale to summon the fish. It has been translated to possibly mean basket or "little man", which ties along with the main character very well... As he is continuously ignoring his own feelings about his wife's wishes.
