A photograph by Evgeniy Maloletka of the injured pregnant woman being carried from the maternity hospital, was awarded "World Press Photo of the Year" in 2023. Her name was Irina Kalinina (32 years old). Her baby, named Miron (after the word for 'peace') was stillborn, and then his mother died in half an hour.

Mstyslav Chernov was highly grateful to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary as - two years into the Ukrainian war - he felt that the urgency of helping his country was starting to fade through war fatigue. Keeping Ukraine in the headlines, whether it be through an Oscar win, is crucial in helping defeat the Russians.
Only 10% of the material shown here was beamed out from the city itself. Electricity and internet connections were some of the first casualties of the Russian invasion. The rest of the footage was successfully smuggled out in a Red Cross convoy.
