In the book it explains that Patty Day had hired the hitman to kill her, she didn't specify how she wanted to die just that it would be quick- and on the agreement that no one would see. So in the book there's a knock on the door extremely late at night, she goes to answer it and the guy goes to stab her in the heart but he misses, ends up stabbing her a second time and then one of her kids see's so he kills her as well (Debby i think?). But obviously as far as Patty knows Libby will come to no harm as she leaves her in that room away from the killer and has arranged for her sister to come by very early the next morning to find her body.
