The Fantasia International Film Festival will celebrate its upcoming 28th edition with an electrifying program of screenings, workshops, and launch events running from July 18 through August 4, 2024, returning to the Concordia Hall and J.A. de Sève cinemas, with additional screens and events at Montréal’s Cinémathèque Québécoise, Cinéma du Musée, Théâtre Plaza, and Bbam! The 28th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival is set to run from from July 18th through August 4th at the Concordia Hall and J.A. de Sève cinemas in Montreal, with additional screens and events at Cinémathèque québécoise and Cinéma du Musée. Over the last couple of months, the festival announced the first wave and the second wave of titles that will be screening this year, and now the final wave has been unveiled, along with an announcement that genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan will be receiving a career achievement award at the festival!

André Forcier will show on closing night for the festival with the world premiere of “Ababouiné.” The filmmaker’s latest is a distinctly regional period piece and buzzy potential masterpiece about a group of kids growing up in 1950s Quebec under the harsh eye of the Catholic Church. Fantasia has awarded the film’s director the Prix Denis-Héroux, an accolade “bestowed for exceptional contribution to the development of Quebec genre cinema.”

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit will join the Black Keys, Wilco, and Widespread Panic in headlining the 2022 Mempho Music Festival in Memphis, Tennessee.

Set for three days in late fall — Sept. 30 through Oct. 2 — Mempho leans into Americana, jam-rock, and blues with a lineup that includes Portugal. The Man, Fantastic Negrito, Allison Russell, Adia Victoria, and 88-year-old bluesman Bobby Rush. Tank and the Bangas, Futurebirds, and Celisse are also on the bill. New work by Sturla Gunnarsson, Denys Arcand, Ruba Nadda and Xavier Dolan are among the selection set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) next month.

“These are filmmakers at the top of their craft, bringing fresh perspectives to traditional genres like comedies and less traditionally Canadian genres, such as musicals,” said Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) senior programmer Steve Gravestock. “This year’s slate truly showcases the diversity of talent in our country, featuring films from coast to coast.”

“We are inspired by the number of exceptional debut features from Canadian directors, reflecting the depth of talent in this country,” said Tiff’s Canadian features programmer Agata Smoluch Del Sorbo.

Séville vp of international sales Anick Poirier will screen the film to buyers on the Croisette and the company will distribute directly in Québec and Canada on May 15.

Arcand also wrote the screenplay to the story of a talented young architect with remarkable talent whose idyllic life is turned upside-down after he meets a mysterious woman in Toronto.

Cinémaginaire’s Denise Robert is producing and the film stars Éric Bruneau, Mélanie Thierry, Melanie Merkosky and Marie‐Josée Croze.

By comparison, Quebecois helmer Denys Arcand’s output might be one film for every five that Xavier Dolan manages to produce, but nonetheless, his films are much appreciated by an adoring public that reaches well beyond Quebec’s borders. Formerly going by the production title of “Deux Nuits,” Le règne de la beauté (translates into The Reign of Beauty) has all the markings of of Arcandian themes: gender relations and fragility of institutions (such as relationships) with a usual pinch of black humor (which doesn’t seem apparent in the trailer below). Pegged as a possible selection for Main Comp at the Cannes Film Festival, this ensemble includes French actress Mélanie Thierry (The Princess of Montpensier) and cross continental thesp Marie-Josée Croze (winner for the Best Actress award in 2003 for Arcand’s The Barbarian Invasions). This is one for the grown-ups.
