Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (2015)

FAQ

Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension

FAQ

The Fleege family—father Ryan (Chris J. Murray), mother Emily (Brit Shaw), and their young daughter Leila (Ivy George), plus Ryan's brother Mike (Dan Gill) and family friend Skylar (Olivia Taylor Dudley)—find themselves caught up in the cult of the Midwife witches as the demon Toby comes closer to obtaining a corporeal body. Mike records it all on a camera found with some old tapes that show young Katie (Chloe Csengery) and Kristi (Jessica Tyler Brown) practicing supernatural abilities with a man named Kent (Don McManus). As Mike and Ryan watch the tapes, however, they find that the tapes are more than just home movies.

The Ghost Dimension is the sixth (and reputedly the final) film in the Paranormal Activity franchise, preceded by Paranormal Activity (2007) (2007), Paranormal Activity 2 (2010) (2010), Paranormal Activity 3 (2011) (2011), Paranormal Activity 4 (2012) (2012), and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014) (2014). The story and screenplay was written by numerous American and Canadian screenwriters, including Jason Pagan, Andrew Deutschman, Adam Robitel, Gavin Heffernan, and Brantley Aufill.

The film starts in Santa Rosa, CA in 1988 depicting the events at the end of the third film, when Katie and Kristi's stepfather Dennis (Christopher Nicholas Smith) is killed. It then jumps to Santa Rosa in 2013, depicting events in the Fleege home just before Christmas.

Katie and Kristi's house burned down in 1992, and their bodies were never recovered. The house in which the Fleeges now live was built over the burned-down house.

Ryan finds Leila chanting "ydoolb yram" in front of a mirror. Mike plays it back and realizes that she is saying "Bloody Mary". Bloody Mary is a folklore legend in which a person stands in front of a mirror, says "Bloody Mary" three times, and an apparition (witch, corpse, ghost, phantom, spirit) is supposed to appear telling the invoker whom s/he is supposed to marry.

It depends on how the millennium is viewed. If the counting system of the Gregorian calendar (the calendar in popular use worldwide) is considered, the millennium begins with the year ending in "1", since anno domimi or common era altogether began with the year 1; thereby years ending in "1", "2", "3", "4", "5" and "6" are the first six years of a millennium, while the immediately-earlier year ending in "0" is actually the thousandth year of the previous millennium; as Gregorian years are ordinal numbers (e.g. "first", "second", "third"...) traditionally represented by Roman numerals (e.g. I, II, III.., for which there is no zero) but contemporarily represented by Hindu-Arabic numerals (e.g. 1, 2, 3..., which can be use as ordinals or cardinals), such that, e.g., the year 2000 actually represents the two-thousandth year (Roman: MM). By the Gregorian calendar, Leila would have to be born on 6/6/2006 for her birthdate to equal 6/6/6. However, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) uses the astronomical calendar, which sets the first year of the millennium at "0", so the years ending in "0", "1", "2", "3", "4" and "5" are the first six years of a millennium. With this, e.g. year 2000 represents the two-thousand-first year (Roman: MMI). This movie has done something funny by—apparently—using the ISO standard's interpretation of the start of common era, making the date "June 6th, 2005" translate to 6/6/6 as in relation to some significant event from roughly 2,005 or 2,006 years ago, be it he birth of the "Christ" or whatever. (Note: In computing, it is 5/5/2005 that would translate to 6/6/6, but only whenever January is represented by 0, and the first day of a month is represented by 0.)

When the extermination ritual fails to abolish Toby, Leila runs to her bedroom. Ryan and Emily chase after her, but Ryan is killed when Toby punches his arm through Ryan's chest. Emily follows Leila through a large hole that has opened above the bed, ending up in the basement of Katie and Kristie's old house, where she comes face-to-face with them. Katie tells Emily that it's too late because Toby has become real now. Emily finds Leila who proudly says that they only needed a drop of her blood. Toby suddenly appears and breaks Emily's neck as she attempts to shield her daughter. In the final scene, Toby slings Emily's body at the camera, and Toby and Leila's feet can be seen walking away together.
