After shooting each scene a few times verbatim, the actors then shot a few more when they improvise to make the scene funnier if possible. This is a method Producer Amy Poehler suggested, because they used it on Parks and Recreation (2009).
Unlike the first three seasons, the fourth season debuted in the summer, instead of the show's usual winter airtime schedule. Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson explained that they initially wrote the fourth season with the assumption that Hillary Clinton would win the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, but after Donald Trump's unexpected victory, they took a six month hiatus to re-write most of the season.
The show is based upon the web series of the same name also created by Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer.
