        The powerful transgression of words

I accidentally discovered this curious and humored short film when searching for works of actress/director Ana Maria Magalhães and I went to see due to its title being taken from a song of similar name famous in the voice of Paralamas do Sucesso and Lulu Santos, and to my surprise the song was in fact composed for the movie and it was originally titled "Poeta Malagueta". The rest is history, so let's go to the film project.

"Assaltaram a Gramática" shows the dissatisfaction poets from the early 1980's were having with the lack of a higher and more original use of words and letters in poetic composition and day-to-day conversations. Names like Chacal, Paulo Leminski and others appear in small interviews where they talk about how creative and original artists could be, and how such trangression of the use of words could also benefit society in general. Along with their views, there are some crazed sketches that prove such intent such as one revolving a quiet man walking on a beach being intercepted by two strangers who make them act in the way they want. And there's even a small tribute to Ana Cristina Cesar, who had just committed suicide just when her career was taking off, and she appears reading a poem of her from her book "Aos Seus Pés" - this appears when one man evidences that people only pay attention to poets after their death. Spot on.

I struggled a little with the sketches, some work others are really confusing but they deliver their message: to subvert the word, to throw them in the air in between making total sense or not but they manage to create something unique, powerful, something of which you cannot feel indifferent. It'll you make you think things in a different way. On a more relevant level, it'll you make you rediscover poetry and the power of words and language. Destined to rebelious curious minds. 7/10.

        • Trivia
Although the title is known as "Assaltaram a Gramática", which gives the film's title, at the end is credited as "Poeta Malagueta". It plays as almost as a reggae, which sounds slightly different than the single, which has a more pop/rock rhythm.
