A moving series. Almost like real if you've gone through war. Suffering in its worst. Human cruelty on one side and the will to live on on the other.
Though the flesh is so powerful that forgets the sense of hope and is lost though the rubbles and the need for human warmth.
All human feelings are strongly exposed in their absolute bluntness with a few words and amazing photography.
Eternal friendship which was built via great suffering is destroyed and expressed with an eye sight with no words but only with facial expressions of great acting.
Alfred is a paradigm of human unfairness.
He is wandering 'what did I do wrong to be in such a misery' and he can find no answer...
Albert.

The Netflix mini-series "War Sailor" is adapted from a Norwegian movie released in 2022 with the same name, now only split into three episodes and is around 30 minutes longer in length compared to the film. This is an extremely powerful and compelling story that portrays how much was at stake for normal families trying to make a living during the second world war. The extreme attention to detail really make you feel for the characters, what they experience and go through, and I constantly kept asking myself while watching "imagine if it was me going through all this", it's seriously heartbreaking, and although this is a story based on something that happened 80 years ago now, I can't help but compare it to what's happening today in Ukraine and therefore find the message of the story to be quite relevant.
Since the three episodes are each an hour in length this is a great-binge and a must watch for all WW2 history buffs.

Wow. Get those tissues ready in case you inadvertently get something in your eye during the final chapter.
Like all truly great cinema, the power here is in what remains unsaid, never have I ever felt so completely destroyed by a single stare. The acting is truly brilliant from the whole cast.
Yes it's slow and at times somewhat meandering - all great epics are, but the slower sections are puntuated with big action sequences that bring to life the horrors of war.
The focus is absolutely on the human cost though - the physical and mental, and the longterm trauma, whiich never really go away and hown they echo throughout societies destroying relationships and corrupting even the bravest and goodest among us.
Truly a brilliant spectacle and visceral story, beautifully told, brilliantly acted and absolutely immersive that will linger with you long after credits roll. 10/10.

So, I very rarely write reviews on here. Lots of more eloquent people than I! However, like the reviews to date, I sat to watch, knowing little about the title. Tend to be drawn to WW2 drama.
This was truly compelling viewing from start to finish. Like others, I watched all the way through in one sitting.
The story is compelling and one that I wasn't too familiar with.
The characters were well developed and one could empathise easily. Cinematography was stunning. Big fan of Scandinavia & it portrayed well.
The depiction of war here felt "real" i.e. The random cruelty, injustice, coincidences, 'the way things work out'.
Well done. So good, I felt obligated to review!

I'd just finished Greyhound, excited some attention was FINALLY being paid to the Atlantic War...an aspect of WWII few know or think about. All of that "stuff" the US made during the war to fight back against the Axis was useless unless it got to Europe. Sounds simple enough but the convoys carrying these supplies were constantly under attack from the stealthiest vessels of the war; submarines. Greyhound excels at showing the stressful, thrilling yet deadly game of cat & mouse played between allied surface vessels & enemy subs. It's combat at sea between two military forces. While escorting the convoy countless cargo vessels are attacked and sunk. These cargo ships are shown burning & sinking and theres some dialogue about their crews survival - or not...then it's back to the fight. What about those crewmen? These civilian merchant sailors? What was their perspectiv from their experiences?
WAR SAILOR takes us along with a small group of Norwegian merchant sailors as they work aboard a cargo ship during the early days of the war. The experiences and trauma experienced by these people as well as their families at home is filled with tension, worry & horror and as heartbreaking a story as one can imagine; told both in the midst of war as well as after. I highly recommend this either with or without the addition of Greyhound for a complementary experience. I will add that while I enjoyed Greyhound very much it's fairly 2 dimensional in the treatment of its human characters. There's not a lot to them, honestly. WAR SAILOR on the other hand is actually about ordinary people thrust into this incredibly difficult period of history. It's heartfelt and unflinching. I can't recommend it enough.
