Can: The Documentary (1999)

Quotes

Can: The Documentary

Edit
  • Irmin Schmidt: Now, we constantly hear the music coming out of the speakers, and the TV goes as far as asking us for terms; about what the music is really saying in that moment. Television is immensely interested in political opinion of beat musicians, because they cannot talk. Television is not at all interested in the political opinion of people who also want Socialism and a more humane society, since they can spell 'it' out. I am insecure. I know much too little bits on TV; so that TV in it's function being gloriously critical of society - can take 'me' as an example? So that it can preach: 'Look: they do not know what they want.' As I said; I should take a manipulated position. And this is as easy as possible. That means I should simplify an immensely complicated economic process, so that it can be consumed. This is an alibi for television. TV knows that only a 'little bit' - only a little bit can be included. But that this bit of the revolution that we want is included in the music. But you can destroy this little bit when you manipulate the musicians in such a way that they are forced to interpret their music with words - and this cannot work. With that, it takes off again, and TV has achieved what it wanted.
