A unique and intriguing take on a werewolf story

Waking up in a strange facility, a young woman is repeatedly targeted and tormented by a religious order looking for more information about her lupine state, despite being unsure of their demands, but as the treatment starts to take hold, her repressed state may prove more dangerous.

Overall, this was an intriguing if ultimately flawed genre effort. One of the better features here is the admittedly impressive way this goes about trying to expand on the werewolf mythos as it adopts a different formula altogether. Rather than go for a creature-on-the-loose story involving a werewolf killing random people in a specific location or even coming to understand the curse itself, the treatment affected here moves somewhat differently to focus on the religious order holding her captive to prove when and how she became infected so that they can save her. This changes the game away from a traditional storyline into more of a torture-porn style feature where the harshness and brutality on display are geared more to ensure it never gets released by trying to torture the concept out of her using the harshness of their beliefs to violently get it out of her. While all of this leads to a bleak, oppressive tone interstitched with the different conversations treating this like a demonic possession rather than a parasitic being that can be driven out through prayer and religious iconography, there's a general sense of disconnect between what's going on and how the film plays out. Since this is all being done to present the idea to her that she's becoming a werewolf for the first time and that she hasn't turned yet, there are no scenes here typifying a traditional werewolf film. Long periods go by with them discussing what's going on and how her soul can be saved if she would only relent to the torture and let the beast go, all coming at the expense of the werewolf running rampant, slaughtering others. Instead, it's endless speeches and barely any kind of fervent genre content that's utilized in the finale, which has some of the best attempts at horror, but beyond that, doesn't have much else to work into the genre.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence and Graphic Language.
