The script was based on a play by director Laura Maria Isabel Ruiz Ocadiz. Only one stage presentation (with different actors) was required for her to realize she had to make a film instead.

Alternate versions
Three different versions of the film were made: 'Nothing Is What It Seems' (2012); 'Dreams and Realities' (2016); and 'We Are a Motive' (2021). The latter combined the first two into a final cut.
