In May, comedy writer Jeannie Gaffigan opened up to People about the scary discovery that she had a tumor the size of an apple wrapped around her brain stem. Gaffigan – who is married to comedian and actor Jim Gaffigan – underwent a nine-hour surgery on April 18 to have the tumor removed.
Though successful, Gaffigan’s road to recovery hasn’t been easy: she battled aspiration pneumonia before returning home and was left unable to swallow due to throat paralysis, leading to the placement of a feeding tube and tracheotomy.
Now, three months later, Gaffigan is sharing her progress and renewed verve for life.

Jim Gaffigan will be added to the cast of FX's hit drama Fargo, the adaptation of the Coen Brothers' Oscar-winning movie, for its third season. THR reports that Gaffigan will play a police deputy named Donny Mashman. Gaffigan will join Carrie Coon, Ewan McGregor, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who were announced as part of the show's cast earlier this year.
McGregor is going to be the star of the series and will be playing a set of twin brothers on what will be his first television series. I'm super excited for the lineup, which has been strong for the series since its beginning. If you haven't watched the show, I highly suggest you give either season a try! Season 3 is set to premiere sometime in late 2017.

It's a running gag on TV Land's The Jim Gaffigan Show that Gaffigan's fellow comedians dismiss his act as being dumb, uncool, and almost entirely about food. The latter charge? Sure, even Gaffigan would cop to that. His signature stand-up routine is about his hatred of Hot Pockets, he wrote a book called Food: A Love Story, and most episodes of the show feature him stopping by Katz's Delicatessen for a pastrami sandwich. There's even a scene in an upcoming episode where, through the magic of time-lapse photography, we see him eat an entire plate of steak frites and a friend's side order of fries in under a minute(*). (*) Being a responsible journalist, I of course asked whether Gaffigan really ate all the food in that scene. He replied (on the record), “I cannot lie, I only ate 90%. There was a spit bucket involved. Please don’t let this become public knowledge,...

Comedy is generational. It's always changing and adapting. What made your great-grandmother laugh will probably be a bit different from what tickles you. More fans today are listening to Jim Gaffigan than Will Rogers. Does that mean Gaffigan is funnier than Rogers? Not necessarily. Usually, after a couple generations, most comedy loses a good deal of its bite. So, in an ever-changing art form, what passes as modern and edgy can slowly turn old-fashioned. The bar for what constitutes modern keeps moving. The evolution of comedy is evident in Vulture's 100 Jokes That Shaped Modern Comedy (disclosure: I helped compile that list), with each comic standing on the shoulders of comics standing on the shoulders of comics, and so on. Similarly, one can see exactly how game-changing technology modernized and transformed comedy: feature-length films (1914), sound films (1927), network radio (1928), network television (1947), the LP record (1948), HBO comedy...

This Saturday night, at 9 p.m., Brian Regan will be the first comedian to broadcast a live stand-up special for Comedy Central from Radio City Music Hall, a place only a select group of comedians could fill in the first place. But unlike those other comedians, Regan didn't get there through celebrity, as he explains it, "I just got lucky enough where along the way, my following just got a little bit bigger and a little bit bigger, and before you knew it I was able to make the jump to theaters without having a TV show." Over the course of a 35-year career, Regan quietly became one of the biggest stand-ups in the country. To interview him, who better than Jim Gaffigan, another comedian with a similar arc? Though Gaffigan's TV Land sitcom, The Jim Gaffigan Show, is wrapping up its first season tonight (it's already been renewed...

Every step of a television show's life cycle is cause for celebration or commiseration. And "The Jim Gaffigan Show," an affable family sitcom starring (surprise!) comedian Jim Gaffigan, has had both in its history. After a long and complicated development run, the series finally found a home at TV Land, which was more than supportive of the show based on the lives of Gaffigan and his wife Jeannie, who are raising five kids in the heart of New York City. And yesterday, TV Land announced that the series would return for a second season, promising even more family-focused antics. Read More: Darren Star On How TV Has Changed From '90210' to 'Younger' Below, Indiewire was able to ask the real-life Gaffigans how the show came together, why Jeannie isn't playing herself and what goes into making a series that basically can be described as "artisanal comedy." So...

The first trailer for Peter Sarsgaard's new film Experimenter is out - and it might just get inside your head.
Co-starring Winona Ryder and Jim Gaffigan, it features the true story behind the development of a psychological test known as the 'Milgram Experiment' on how humans respond to authority.
Set at Yale University in 1961 during the trial of Adolf Eichmann, it features people who believe they are giving a friendly stranger (Gaffigan) in another room an electric shock because they are told to do so.
Despite his pleas, those involved in the experiment continue to administer the shocks because they are told to.
It raises interesting questions against the trial of Eichmann as to how far a person will go if they are told to do something.
Stanley Milgram (Sarsgaard), the creator behind the experiment, divides the country as some celebrate his work and others question it.
Ryder co-stars as his supportive wife Sasha.

The biopic debuted at Sundance to positive reviews, boasting a cast of Peter Sarsgaard, Winona Ryder, Kellan Lutz, John Leguizamo, Taryn Manning, Anton Yelchin and Jim Gaffigan. The official synopsis reads: "Yale University, 1961. Stanley Milgram (Sarsgaard) designs a psychology experiment that still resonates to this day, in which people think they're delivering painful electric shocks to an affable stranger (Gaffigan) strapped into a chair in another room. The summer is a confusing time for late night shows. With vacation time, shows are often off, then on, seemingly at random. When shows do air, there’s fewer dangerous animals on, and more affect-less athletes. And yet, some really funny things happen on late night during these lesser watched months. Jimmy Fallon nearly lost a hand, Conan rode into Comic-Con with a Mad Max war band. We got to see Colbert interview Eminem on Monroe, Michigan public access TV. Jon Stewart’s Daily Show month long “moment of zen” farewell continues, streaming every episode back-to-back, available globally. It wasn’t all bad.
Last week, Bill Hader and Amy Schumer were doing the rounds for Trainwreck, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were reunited with Jimmy, Emma Stone was on Conan, Meyers got a dose of Schumer and Jim Gaffigan, and Corden horsed around with Ian McKellen. Plus, John Oliver took...

Wondering why some networks have all but given up on creating new sitcoms? Maybe Jim Gaffigan knows the answer.
The stand-up comic, whose sitcom "The Jim Gaffigan Show" debuted on TV Land this week, has been promoting the show with interviews (including here, here, and here) where he explains why he took his new series to basic cable.
According to Gaffigan, each broadcast network tried to shoehorn his autobiographical series into its preferred sitcom format, with less of an eye on what would make the show unique or good and more on what would make it test well with audiences and run long enough to be sold into syndication. That's where the real money is for a TV production company -- we're talking hundreds of millions of dollars for a successful series with at least 100 episodes in its library -- but to get there, the networks apparently believe that risk-avoidance...

Revolving around a fictionalized version of Louis Ck, the Louie comedy series has aired for five low-rated seasons on FX. Now, TV Land is trying a similar concept with The Jim Gaffigan Show. Will it perform better in the ratings? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned.
Set in New York City, The Jim Gaffigan Show revolves around a fictionalized version of comedian/author/actor Gaffigan as he struggles to find a balance between fatherhood, stand-up comedy, and an insatiable appetite. The rest of the cast includes Ashley Williams, Adam Goldberg, Michael Ian Black, and Tongayi Chirisa.

A stand-up whose best-known routines include riffs on bacon, donuts and Hot Pockets, Jim Gaffigan is a likeable onstage presence whose strongest asset is his harmless affability — the fact that he’s an unassuming regular guy, except funnier. However, those qualities only take Gaffigan so far with “The Jim Gaffigan Show,” his semiautobiographical TV Land laugher that’s amusing in stretches but too often succumbs to benign blandness and sitcom conventionality. Judged on five episodes made available by the network — which recently unveiled a new logo as part of a concerted rebranding effort to court Gen-Xers through edgier fare —...

In The Jim Gaffigan Show, premiering tonight on TV Land, the show’s star and co-creator draws on his own stand-up and best-selling books; his art in turn is drawn from his life, so there’s a bit of an ouroboros thing happening. Gaffigan plays, of all people, Jim Gaffigan, a New York–based comedian with a wife named Jeannie (Ashley Williams) and five kids, the youngest of whom is an infant, seen during the time-lapse opening credits being carried around the kitchen in a Snugli. Is it insensitive to point out that Gaffigan is playing yet another heavyset TV dad with a skinny knockout wife? I suspect not — Gaffigan’s books include Dad Is Fat and Food: A Love Story, and his real-life wife is also named Jeannie and an industry veteran who co-produces the series with the star. How about the lead character’s general ineptitude and man-boy bluster,...

Fifteen years ago, Jim Gaffigan was yet another young stand-up comic riding the conveyer belt from the comedy clubs to a network sitcom in the wake of the success of Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano, Tim Allen, and more. His CBS sitcom "Welcome to New York" was designed as a vehicle for him, but somewhere between the start of development and when it hit the air, the focus shifted to co-star Christine Baranski, an Emmy winner for CBS' "Cybill." It turned out to be a good showcase for neither, and produced only 13 episodes before calling it quits. That wasn't the end of Jim Gaffigan, sitcom actor, but for a long time, it was the end of Jim Gaffigan, aspiring sitcom star. He took jobs on other people's shows ("The Ellen Show," "My Boys") and largely focused on his food-obsessed comedy act (like his famous routine about Hot Pockets). Given how well...

The Jim Gaffigan Show feels like a family business. It stars comedian Jim Gaffigan as a fictionalized version of himself — a food- and nap-loving devoted father of five, who is raising his brood of fair-haired kids in a two-bedroom apartment in New York City. Gaffigan also writes and produces the scorchingly funny series with his wife and writing partner Jeannie, and while the three of us chat on the phone, they’re joined by their 3-year-old Michael (child No. 4), who entertains us before departing with a charmingly lisped “Thanks! Thanks! Thanks! Thank you!” Clearly, performing is in the youngster’s … Continue reading →

Art replicates life for Jim Gaffigan.
The actor and comedian debuts The Jim Gaffigan Show on TV Land next month and says his home life helps feed the story lines for the show.
In an interview with Esquire, Gaffigan talked about raising his five kids (who range in age from 2 to 11) with his wife, Jeannie, and living in a two-bedroom New York City apartment, sans mini van.
"Being a parent is difficult. Being a son and a daughter is difficult. It's a human relationship. It's great fodder for material," he said.
Gaffigan also revealed that he thinks that Father's Day is a less sincere holiday.

Jim Gaffigan didn't prepare differently for Wednesday night's eighth annual Stand Up for Heroes concert, but performing at the benefit for wounded veterans, which he's done before, feels different, he said, particularly when you think of what those in the audience and with the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which puts on the New York Comedy Festival kickoff event, have done. "I think as a lazy coward, I think that what veterans have done and their sacrifice for their families…I think we take it for granted in our society, whether we support the war or whatever," Gaffigan told The Hollywood Reporter
