Reflecting on his preparation for his role, Joseph Gordon-Levitt said he was inspired by a variety of "great" detective films. "Chinatown (1974), The Long Goodbye (1973)--you can go back even to the old black-and-white days and watch The Maltese Falcon (1941) or Double Indemnity (1944), these kinds of movies," he said. "I also love the more modern ones, the Coen brothers, they have a bunch of great detective murder mysteries."
