This show is not perfect.
The pacing of the story is a bit off, and as other reviewers have said the constant time jumps are annoying and could have been handled more creatively without losing the plot.
It is a slow burn, purposely so, not just to build tension but to have the viewer invest in the characters. This pays off eventually.
One big problem is the script. It's not the best. Pace is erratic and content variable. I get the feeling this was a very hard novel to bring to the screen but so feel it could have been done better.
The good things, and there are plenty.
Great acting, especially from the three siblings and 'Talcott' in particular. Forrest Whittaker is a class act (I'll forgive him Battlefield Earth).
Very good delivery of a variable script, dialogue is clear and has emotion.
Production values are evident in every scene.
I do think this series is better than the sum of its parts and encourage potential viewers top give it a chance. Having said that, I also think it's a binge watch rather than an episode every night.

Why is chapter 8 in chapter 9 of Emperor of Ocean Park, the last 5 minutes for both of 'em, has the audio going out! What you don't want it to be successful, as a good black Chicago based show.? It has a lot of strong characters has a lot of set up for the next chapter even the next season. But yet, if it continues this way, what having audio issues, how could somebody anticipate the next Sunday, people will lose interest, thinking that the audio is going to go out. Is it a MGM plus issue? Or is it a show issue regardless of which one? It needs to be fixed as soon as possible. Hopefully, you guys fixed this before the next season starts.

Again another series that started off well but deteriorated rapidly, into a looong drawn out angst fest with very little happening. You put together a good cast that can act, then gave them a weak script.
Worst of all is the idea that jumping backwards and forwards in time for literally each scene one after the other, episode after episode, makes for a watchable story! What were you thinking???
To fixate on the phrase "do you have the arrangements" repeated ad nauseam all the way through like an 'omage to the Olivier/Hoffman "is it safe" scene from Marathon Man, only succeeded in irritating to the point where I was shouting at the screen.. NO and I don't care either!!!

I'm writing after having seen the first episode, that aired last night. And, it's very good.
This show is about POWER & FAMILY--and a mysterious DEATH. Led by the always-good Forrest Whittaker as a very powerful judge, who appears modeled after Justice Clarance Thomas.
But "The Judge" (as he's frequently called) has a very extraordinary tv family--especially for an African-American family. They are ALL accomplished, very bright & competitive. They also are being drawn, unwillingly, into a possible murder.
The circumstances and "supporting" characters are all involved in government, business, and the intelligence worlds.
The future episodes may be subpar, but the premiere was a definite 10 out of 10.
BTW, this series on MGM+ tv had almost NO marketing; and lots of people who would enjoy it, don't know it exists.

I had high hopes for this show with its solid cast but I was quickly let down.
First off, the lead actor, Grantham Coleman is a bland boring monotone actor with zero range on his acting skills. I saw him before playing Ronnie on Raising Kanan and unfortunately, on this show, he is still playing Ronnie just dressed up as a lawyer. His demonor is the same. His look and over grown mustache are the same. Even his portal of both characters are exactly the same.
Secondly, this show has a plot that just isn't entertaining and does a horrible job of keeping the viewer enthralled. There isn't much action, its mostly 85% dialogue between two mid range actors continuously discussing "the arrangements" which after 7 episodes I still have no clue what these "arrangements" are.
Save yourself the time and take nap. It'll be more entertaining than watching this.

My only quibble is that I was drawn to this show because of FW who can do no wrong as an actor. He's got it going in lenght, breadth, and depth, when it comes to his craft. And in looks too, in that he's not the standard roll out from casting central.
As a leading man, he carries the weight with ease and grace and never phones it in, you here that Denzel? Al? Nicholas? Forrest never! Phones! It! In!
You guys can learn from him.
Not a whole lot of FW in this first episode but that there is of him is pitch perfecto!!! And I excpect a lot of backstory to unfold.
Rest of the cast, storyline, writing, all A's. Good mix of characters and the casting. Tension is not melodramatic, just the right setting on the dial.
So I'm all set to see ep 2. Let's go, let's go, let's go!!!

Implied message of series = White people evil, Republicans bad
Actuality of series = Writing bad, Acting tolerable.
I really wanted this show to be enjoyable just because of what Forest Whitaker has accomplished in his storied acting career and brings to any project he takes on. Unfortunately this was not the case here. From the very beginning, this series draws strong racial and political boundaries, under the guise of a dramatic television project. It doesn't make the statement then lighten up, but doubles down on the rhetoric and ramps up on the hatred and vitriol.
For the viewers that can watch this and realize that it's just a television series (that was intended to entertain but falls short of that goal) it's mildly watchable and barely coherent. But for the easily triggered and politically radical viewers it is a blueprint to manipulated anger and even more racial and political division.

I tried my best to watch this but I finally gave up after episode 3.
It reminded me of a nonsensical movie called Tenet. I couldn't understand it, and gave up after 30 minutes. This series got a little more time from me but, by the end of E3, it got too much time.
There was so much tooing and froing between timelines, that didn't really matter; it got frustrating. Most of what was being portrayed was padding. This could have been a 4 parter or at most, a 6 parter.
When the viewer reaches a point whereby they actually don't care what happens, the viewer has been lost. This seems to be the lot of viewers today, being dished up crap, covered in sugar.

Finally, a Hollywood TV series with black leads where, no one is selling drugs, no one is from the hood, no one is on welfare, in public housing or on government support and needs to be saved. It's a miracle. The casting is good, the actors have range, they're educated, well spoken and employed and actually own stuff.
Hollywood need to produce more TV shows like this. Here's a gentle reminder, that not all POC come from lower income backgrounds, are African American and have a connection to narcotics. More of this Hollywood and less of everything else. More recognition of the fact that your audience stretches far beyond people who like shows like snowfall, the wire, godfather of harlem and abbott elementary. It's about time that Hollywood ups it's game and widens the scope of its content in both TV and film.

This show is perfect! It's a psychological thriller based off an elite Black American family. The father is a federal Judge that mysteriously died. His daughter is the first to recognize that the cause for her father's death isn't adding up. She embarks on a journey to discover the truth. She eventually gets her bothers on board to help. It's a slow burn in the BEST way! I love how the story unfolds going back and forth in time. The storytelling and acting draws you in from the start! Every single cast members deserves an EMMY! Thank you for bring SMART television back! Outstanding work!! 👏🏾 Please order 5 to 6 more seasons!

Only half way through and Im obsessed. Have closed to 800 shows on my Watched List. This related to family complexities, social issues always leaving you needing more. The episodes seemlessly run together. It's the perfect show to binge in a day. It has an interesting perspective of how a father maintains unique relationships with each of his children which i think many will find relatable. Even though my political knowledge is limited the writers include me through the perspective of one of the children. In addition, the family dynamic is further relatable through the choice a of the siblings and how they complicate families. All while a mystery is being solved and real lives are being lived.
The pacing was very good, for a drama. What starts as a mundane family tragedy steadily becomes more and more complex. Usually dramas are too slow for me, but this one kept it interesting with the quickly evolving plot lines.
The aspects involving race and class relations contain little commentary, but are primarily a portrayal of political climates over the past several decades. Some insight is provided on conservative Black politics, with acknowledgement of the nuance, complexities, and backlash involved.
The Judge himself is an excellent stand-in for a dramatized Clarence Thomas, but perhaps with stronger moral convictions which take him down a different yet still troublesome path.

It's amazing where and how people's (reviewers') racism rears it's ugly, small minded, vapid head. This show transcends color lines and can effortlessly have any race be represented. The show did not erase the color line but politely acknowledged the race/culture the show happened to focus around
RACE aside! This show has a great story line that develops similar to 100's of shows that are out now. The plot is well developed and allowed the audience to understand and get to know the characters. Do I believe some of the episodes were drawn out in an effort to prod at a 2nd season, yes. But it's the culture nowadays...whaddaya gonna do??!! It was an enjoyable show that had hooked and I'm hopeful for a 2nd season.
