Diciannove (2024)
The highs and lows of a restless youth collide headlong into the concrete realities of adulthood when Leonardo, a teenager from Palermo leaves home for the first time. His studies land him in Siena, by way of London, where he clashes with his instructor, the curriculum, and most chaotically, with himself. Produced by Luca Guadagnino, Diciannove (nineteen), marks the feature filmmaking debut of writer-director Giovanni Tortorici, a bold, brash and bemusing filmmaking talent.

weird teenager growing into a weird adult

An introverted 19-year-old Leonardo leaves his parents' home and starts his adulthood. We're traveling with him a bit to London, but mostly to Siena, Italy, where he decides to study literature and, even more importantly, his independent life helps him discover his own personality, his tastes and fantasies. The film looks bold and shows things about the character that would normally be covert and even disgusting to see, but it helps us get a glimpse of the world he's starting to live in. If I didn't misunderstand, there's also a conflict between Leonardo's love for the literature, morality, restraint and norms of the 19th century (the title explains that) and his secret fantasies as well as binge-drinking that leads to him hospitalized by an ambulance, etc.

Personally, I didn't feel I could relate to this character but what I do relate to is the necessity of independence and self-discovery at this age that would pave the way for self-acceptance and a harmonious life as an adult. I'm not sure the film raised that but still, it was an interesting way of showing how this a bit weird teenager is becoming a weird adult.

    Generational Film?

I have the feeling that this is an important film that I just don't enjoy. The main character seems neither hero nor anti-hero, mostly anti-social and not very likable. He is nihilistic without feeling punk rock , but rather conservative.

Lately, an online trend is to compare Millennial and Gen z reactions to GenX staples. This film might be a Millennial perspective that I, as an X, don't grok. I almost never feel sympathy for this character or feel like cheering him on. I also don't hate him. He's a smart, attractive young man with literature interests. I can never seem to care about what he does or be annoyed by what annoys him. In the end I'm left feeling toward a him very mid, but maybe that's the point?
