Christina Applegate revealed her Ms diagnosis in 2021.
She has since opened up, using her platform to get real about the devastating autoimmune disease.
Before her diagnosis, however, there were warning signs.
But she missed those signs while filming. The grueling hours that go into making television made her symptoms look like routine exhaustion — at first.

Christina Applegate has revealed how she overlooked an early symptom of multiple sclerosis (Ms) while filming her Netflix series Dead to Me. Speaking on the latest episode of her MeSsy podcast, which she co-hosts with Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who also has Ms, Applegate explained how she fell over while filming a running sequence in a field. She didn’t realize it at the time, but this was an early sign of her Ms. “Hi, first sign of Ms!” Applegate said of the fall. “So, not to bring everybody down, but there it was.” The Emmy-winning actress revealed her Ms diagnosis in August of 2021 and has since retired from acting. She and The Sopranos alum Sigler share their health stories on their MeSsy podcast. Dead to Me creator and executive producer Liz Feldman was a guest on the latest episode of the podcast and recalled times when Applegate would lose her balance on set.

More than five years later, Christina Applegate is recalling how her struggle with multiple sclerosis (Ms) began.
The 4x Golden Globe nominee unknowingly experienced one of her first symptoms of Ms while filming the pilot for her Netflix dark comedy-drama Dead to Me, which ran for three seasons on the streamer from 2019 to 2022.
“I remember falling that day. Hi, first sign of Ms!” she said to the show’s creator Liz Feldman on Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler’s MeSsy podcast, recounting a scene that featured her character Jen running across a field.
Feldman noted, “I remember you losing your balance a couple of times but it was very hard to figure out. I remember one time it was like really late at night, we’d been shooting probably 14 or 15 hours, it seemed completely reasonable that anybody would be collapsing.”

John Waters’ annual top 10 movies list is always an eclectic one, filled with movies on the fringe that we may have never even heard of, ever a champion for the maligned. But the most interesting addition this year is one that got a lot of attention this year – just for all the wrong reasons.
Taking the #6 spot on his list of the top 10 movies of 2024 for Vulture, John Waters picked Todd Phillips’ much-derided Joker: Folie à Deux, which had all of the hype possible behind it but flopped with critics and audiences. In his write-up, Waters told us just what worked for him: “Finally, a love story I can relate to. So insane, so well thought out, so well directed, so much smoking! It’s Jailhouse Rock meets Busby Berkeley with a 9/11 That’s Entertainment! ending that will make you shake your head in cinematic astonishment.

John Waters is wading into the “Joker: Folie à Deux” critical controversy — and is already making a splash.
Waters released his annual list of the best films of the year, as published by Vulture, and bestowed the number six slot to Todd Phillips’ polarizing sequel.
“Finally, a love story I can relate to,” Waters wrote. “So insane, so well thought out, so well-directed, so much smoking! It’s ‘Jailhouse Rock’ meets Busby Berkeley with a 9/11 ‘That’s Entertainment!’ ending that will make you shake your head in cinematic astonishment.”
Waters added, “Stupid critics. Gaga so good. Joker so right. Die, dumbbells, die!”
“Joker: Folie à Deux” received quite the support from subversive auteurs like Quentin Tarantino, who said that director Phillips harnessed the Joker mentality while helming the feature.
“He’s saying fuck you to all of them. He’s saying fuck you to the movie audience. He’s saying fuck you to Hollywood.

Kathy Bates is making a massive comeback with her career in her latest role as Madeline Matlock in the new show Matlock.
The new series is a fan favorite and was renewed for Season 2 after just two episodes. Although Kathy was scared at first, she is coming into her own with the role.
Kathy shared that this would be her last role, and she was ready to retire before being offered this new role with a twist. She seems to love the acting, and hopefully, the show will last for years.
The original Matlock featured Andy Griffith as an older lawyer who solves cases each week while dispensing wisdom to everyone, so there are some differences, as Monsters and Critics has reported.
Still, the new show’s surprising twist, revealed at the end of the first episode, explains why Madeline Matlock is trying so hard to get a job at...

Christina Applegate’s Married… With Children papa, Ed O'Neill, was this week’s guest on the MeSsy with Christina Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler podcast. “I don’t even know how to explain this person,” Applegate said as she introduced her fictional father. “He raised me, so if you don’t like anything about me, it’s his fault.”
To be fair, she added, “If you do like anything about me, also his fault.”
Applegate almost didn’t get to play Kelly Bundy to O’Neill’s Al Bundy. At 15, the young actress read the pilot script and concluded, “This is toilet humor. And I don’t do toilet humor. It’s totally gross.”
Married… with Children hired two other kid actors — David Faustino wasn’t an original Bundy either — and shot the pilot. “It didn’t work,” Applegate remembered. “They came to me and said, ‘Please, please just watch the pilot that we did.

The actor — who has appeared in iconic original films such as “Wedding Crashers,” “Old School,” and “Swingers” — explained why there is a lack of modern R-rated comedies in theaters.
“[Studios] just overthink it,” Vaughn said during First We Feast’s “Hot Ones” series. “And it’s like, it’s crazy, you get these rules, like, if you did geometry, and you said 87 degrees was a right angle, then all your answers are messed up, instead of 90 degrees. So there became some idea or concept, like, they would say something like, ‘You have to have an IP.'”
He continued, “The people in charge don’t want to get fired more so than they’re looking to do something great, so they want to kind of follow a set of rules that somehow get set in stone,...

Judd Apatow has always preferred to be a behind-the-scenes comedic creative.
The mega-producer and director said during Kevin Hart’s talk show “Hart to Heart,” airing July 17 on Peacock, that he always uplifted his more well-established comedian pals while starting out in Hollywood.
“When you’re young, you don’t feel like you’re the successful person. You’re just trying to break in,” Apatow said. “You believe in your friends, like, ‘Oh my gosh, my friend is the funniest person ever.’ […] So when I started, I lived with [Adam] Sandler for a while. Rob Schneider lived across the street. David Spade lived down the street. I would drive over the hill to Jim Carrey’s house to help him with stuff: jokes, sketches, for ‘In Living Color.’ And I was one person that was like, ‘I’ll help you write your jokes.'”

Comedies may not get the prestige and glory of dramas when it comes to awards, but the filmmakers behind them would probably agree that they're infinitely harder to make. The hope is that what's being captured on set will make audiences laugh months, sometimes even years, after production is wrapped. In order to determine whether something is funny, you're relying on a much smaller crew of people, from those who wrote the script to the crew behind the camera. If they're laughing, you're probably doing something right. But comedy is extremely subjective, and you never really know if you've got a true crowd-pleaser until those first test screening reactions start rolling in.
But in the case of Will Ferrell and Jon Favreau's modern classic holiday comedy "Elf," which follows an orphan human raised by elves at the North Pole as he tries to reconnect with his estranged biological father...

We all know that San Diego comes from the German for whale’s vagina, but did you know that a lot of the banter between Ron Burgundy and co-anchor Veronica Corningstone was off the cuff? As much as TV anchors need their scripts to deliver the news, Will Ferrell and Christina Applegate were encouraged to venture far off of theirs when making 2004’s Anchorman.
Ferrell and Applegate recently got together on the latter and Jamie-Lynn Sigler’s joint podcast, MeSsy (via EW), to reflect on their time filming Anchorman, particularly how director Adam McKay would make frantic calls from behind the camera. As Ferrell put it, “A lot of that stuff, Christina and I going back and forth insulting each other, some of that was scripted, but so much of that was like, ‘Just keep going!’ Adam just wouldn’t yell cut, so you just had to keep going. In “Elf,” Will Ferrell‘s Buddy treks from the North Pole to NYC to find his biological father, James Caan‘s Walter Hobbs, and Hobbs has little patience for Buddy’s childlike antics. As it turns out, Caan didn’t find Ferrell too amusing on set either.

EW reports that Ferrell recounted on the “MeSsy” podcast on how he and Caan didn’t see eye to eye while filming “Elf.” So much so, in fact, the legendary actor couldn’t help but tease Ferrell for how over-the-top his acting was as Buddy.

In yet another example of life imitating art, Will Ferrell irritated James Caan nearly as much as Buddy bugged his biological father Walter Hobbs in the Christmas comedy Elf. In fact, between scenes, Caan would tell Ferrell that he didn’t understand why everyone found the Saturday Night Live star so hilarious.
“He would tease me,” Ferrell confessed on Christina Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler’s MeSsy podcast. “In between setups, he would be like, ‘I don’t get you. You’re not funny.’ And I’m like, ‘I know. I’m not Robin Williams.’ And he was like, ‘People ask me: ‘Is he funny?’’ And I’m like, ‘No, he’s not funny.’”

James Caan wasn’t exactly acting when he seemed annoyed with Will Ferrell while filming Christmas classic Elf.
In an interview with Christina Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler’s Messy podcast, Ferrell revealed that his late co-star Caan didn’t “get” his humor at first. Instead, Ferrell drove Caan “crazy,” just like his character.
“James Caan, may he rest in peace, we had such a good time working on that movie,” Ferrell said. “He would tease me. Christina, you know: I like to do bits, but I’m not like ‘on’ all the time. In the years since its release, Elf has become a Christmas classic, with many families making it a part of their annual holiday traditions. However, James Caan wasn’t sure Elf would work as he didn’t find Will Ferrell to be all that funny, at least at first.
While speaking on the Messy podcast (via IndieWire), Will Ferrell said the late James Caan wasn’t a fan of his performance in Elf during the production. “James Caan, may he rest in peace, we had such a good time working on that movie,” Ferrell said. “He would tease me. Will Ferrell revealed during an interview on the “Messy” podcast (via IndieWire) that his late “Elf” co-star James Caan was not a fan of his performance as Buddy the Elf until he saw the final cut of the Christmas movie at the film’s premiere. Ferrell said that Caan told him at several points during production that he just wasn’t funny, although Ferrell admitted to driving Caan “crazy” on set while playing the overenthusiastic Buddy.

Will Ferrell has revealed why he doesn’t go by his birth name.
At the end of the latest episode of Christina Applegate and Jamie Lynn Sigler’s podcast MeSsy, Ferrell participated in a game where his Anchorman co-star analyzed his personality according to his picks for his top five favorite movies. After noticing that Ferrell picked ensemble films like The Godfather and Shawshank Redemption, “where somebody would have your back,” Applegate noted that the actor may have felt that growing up, he didn’t have “a place of belonging in a group.”
Ferrell confirmed there was “a lot of validity to that” and shared a story from his childhood. “You know what’s interesting about that [analysis]? This is like a minor thing—it’s not really even trauma. I remember being so embarrassed because my real name is John. John William Ferrell,” he said.

Turns out, James Caan needed some convincing to find Will Ferrell’s “Elf” performance funny.

Though the name “Will Ferrell” carries immense prestige today, it conceals a dark secret that haunted Ferrell on every first day of school he ever attended.
Anyone familiar with Ferrell’s work would reasonably assume that it would be exceptionally hard to embarrass the Saturday Night Live legend. After all, we’ve seen Ferrell semi-to-fully-nude and screaming nonsensically in roughly $2.6 billion worth of various box-office successes, but we never once saw him blush. However, there is one way to humiliate the Anchorman and Elf star that’s stood the test of time since his very birth — call him by his real name.
Like many such stars, the moniker Ferrell sports for the posters and credits of his blockbuster comedies (sort of) isn’t the one that’s on his driver’s license, and the stage name of “Will Ferrell” wasn’t what teachers called him in elementary school.

On the latest episode of their podcast MeSsy, Christina Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler reflected on their previous struggles with eating disorders.
Applegate recalled that her mother put her in Weight Watchers when she was 15. “She was always competitive,” said the actress about her mom, who had body image issues of her own. “If I got down to 110 [pounds]… she’d be like, ‘Oh! I’m so mad! How’d you do it? How’d you get down to 110?’ And the reason why was because I had an eating disorder.”
The Dead to Me alum said she would eat five almonds in a day and if she had six, she would cry and would refuse to leave her house. “That stuck with me for years and years and years,” she said.
