Adult Dean says during the end credits "So, it turned out Alabama was ready for a black Peter Pan. A black boy with a white girl, though? Yeah, y'all were gonna have to wait for the '80s to roll around before sitcoms would go there." In 1972 the sitcom All in the Family (1971) had an episode titled Lionel Steps Out (1972), in which Lionel, a black man, was dating Linda, a white woman. Also, The Jeffersons (1975) debuted in 1975 with regular characters Tom and Helen Willis who were an interracial couple.
