You Are My Reason

Watching the relationship between Yasmine and Lisa is just so heartwarming. You could've really pinned them against each other but giving the lead character, Yasmine, the wonderful support system was a very interesting choice. A lot of the times, when mental illness occurs we tend to see the downward spiral and the people around them whom are the closest as the culprit to some of the deepest issues contributing to that person's triggers to the illness. However, this underlying level of support and presence with her wife, although Lisa worked a ton to support the both of them, carried the film.

The representation of a same sex relationship between two women was another aspect of this film that I truly enjoyed. The chemistry between the two women who played Yasmine, portrayed by Rachyl Parker, and Lisa, portrayed by Camille Wiggins, was real. I'm not sure this would've had the same effect without that aspect in this film.

Written and Directed by Jasmine Banks, I am excited to see what she has next on her roster of films and look forward to witnessing her success within the entertainment industry.

You Are My Reason is the first of many films I'm sure, but this one is so special and a strong start into the industry. The underlying themes of support, empathy, love, faith, and self-discovery represent the strength of this film and leads me to want more of it. I would love to see the exploration of relapse, higher stake conflict, and more aspects of their relationship (the good, the bad, and the ugly) if a part 2 is in the works.
