In an interview with German magazine Der Spiegel, Tim Roth said he only participated in the film because he needed the money. Sam Neill later wrote in his autobiography that he only agreed to make this film because of the money- and because he did not care at all about soccer. Neill further writes that when he was drinking at a pub with Roth while filming, Neill asked whether they should really be making the movie due to the controversy surrounding it to which Roth responded, "This film will put my kids through college."
FIFA provided £16m of the film's £19m budget.
As of January 2016, this is the only film on IMDb's Bottom 100 Movies list to have a Metacritic score of 1.
