Over the last few years, Chinese and Hong Kong films have delved into a small but noticeable trend of incorporating terror in locations that were originally places of communal experiences. Films like “Back Home” and “Yum Investigation” started the trend and it extends now to director Jack Lai‘s feature-film debut “Possession Street.” The incorporation of zombie horror and more traditional Taoist elements creates a thrilling survival horror-inspired feature now screening at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Egyptian filmmaker Sara Shazli will be presenting her latest documentary, “Your Daughter,” during the Venice Production Bridge’s Final Cut workshop for films in post-production from Africa and the Arab world.
The director’s sophomore feature is a deeply personal story about her struggle to emerge from the long shadow cast by her mother, powerhouse producer and filmmaker Marianne Khoury, while also preparing to become a first-time mom.

While overseeing its construction, she remembers her childhood and the Ethiopian nanny who raised her, setting in motion an emotional journey to wrestle with the lingering pain of her mother’s absence from her life growing up.

Chinese-American star Bai Ling is at the AFM with her directorial debut.
Chinese-American cult film star Bai Ling is at AFM this week talking about her directing debut My Quarantine Romance With Toilet Paper to the industry, poolside at market hub, Le Méridien Delfina.
Bai, whose acting credits include Red Corner starring Richard Gere and The Crow with Brandon Lee, self-funded the completed film that began shooting in Beverly Hills in August 2020. Inspiration, she says, came from her experiences of the pandemic, having arrived back in Los Angeles after a trip to Kazakhstan, only to be met with lockdown and the ensuing toilet paper shortage.
