In a world of advanced AI, Charlie, a closeted teenager, moves from the Midwest to California to begin university. Each freshman is assigned a Personal Companion, a hyper-realistic humanoid robot, to ensure they adjust well to their new environment. Having developed an intimate friendship with his Companion, Adrien, Charlie prepares to confess that his feelings have deepened into love. Adrien, meanwhile, contemplates how to break the news that he, along with the other Companions, will soon be deactivated and factory reset to prepare for the next incoming class.
