Terrific & original western nudging its writer / director towards Zahler / West status
Those disappointed by Guy Pearce in the dire "The Woman In Cabin 10" should instead watch him in terrific & original western "Killing Faith" (aka 'Devil In The Dust') as an addict widower doctor accompanying freed slave DeWanda Wise (excellent) across treacherous badlands (populated by the likes of Jamie Neumann (good) & Raoul Max Trujilo) to get to preacher Bill Pullman in the hope of saving her apparently cursed young daughter Emily Katherine Ford. Ned Crowley's third screenplay is the second he also directed, and while not COMPLETELY blowaway it does nudge him towards the heights of S Craig Zahler & Ti West (and that's SOME praise). Crackin' movie.
Whoa
Really good. At last, an original idea for a horror movie!! Fantastic script, cinematography, direction. Great casting decisions. Cast brought its A-game!! Really looking forward to more Ned Crowley flicks. This one shows tremendous creative ability and execution and cannot possibly be a one-hit-wonder. Keep them coming!
Absolute Classic! An unseen gem!
Surprised that this hasn't been seen more often. If you are a fan of 'Bone Tomahawk' or any of Craig Zahler movies you will love this. This is a western and a thriller/horror and is very nicely directed. The cinematography, editing to keep the pace and the entire direction is first class. Guy Pearce- what can he not do ? He's perfect as the worn out 'Doc' taking a lady and her child to a preacher! I loved the ending although it is a bit wicked to say the least. This movie is not for the faint-hearted. Loved every minute of it!
IMDb says it's a thriller, I say decide for yourself.
IMDb classifies this movie as a thriller.
I would tell you it's a western set in the 1840s. Beyond that exactly what kind of movie it is I think is something you should decide for yourself. It's quirky. Not in a humorous way, but in a way that will leave you wondering where it's going, what's behind it.
I think in the technical aspects it is well handled. The acting is top notch with Guy Pearce, DeWandan Wise, & Bill Pullman playing the leads. The writing and dialogue is interesting, the film production is well done. Like it or not you won't find yourself asking if students made it.
I do agree that it definitely shares one trait with a thriller. Your not sure what's coming. I always worry watching trailers can give away too much. The trailer here is borderline. Will it ruin the movie for you, probably not. On the other hand I'm glad I didn't watch it until I finished watching the movie.
It behooves you to pay attention. There are definitely small things, a brief sentence, a little event that will play an outsized role in carrying the story line. I don't recommend playing a video game or folding laundry while watching with one, it's not that kind of movie.

Good, with a possible open ending for debate
At this moment there is only one other review available. That review spends several paragraphs giving a summary of the plot, the stars in it, the people who made it and other details we already know, because why would we be reading a review for a movie we haven't even read who stars in it and its plot? Then it ends with "I enjoyed it, but it could have had more details" (summarized, but only a few words shorter than the original). So, here is my review.
The movie is great. I'm not gonna tell you who stars in it, or the plot, because if you don't already know this, why are you reading reviews? It sucks you in and keeps you even when you thought it wouldn't. The acting is really superb. Except for the little girl - they made her stay far too quiet for a child. They created a debate on "sickness vs evil vs possession" Is she sick? Is she possessed? Or is she simply born evil? It is a good debate, and then demonstrates how 3rd parties will swoop in to harness it for themselves, whatever it may be. I think the debate fell a bit flat due to certain things they presented, I won't tell you my take away because it is a debate for you to have with yourself. The ending tries to conclude in a way I did not follow, so it felt contrived. But I think there are plenty of people who would agree with the path it took.
